Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates has a very large and complex economy, which is driven by shoppe and stall owners competing for commodities harvested across an ocean. The products shoppes produce are crucial to a pirate's daily activities, thus the economy is based on the economic theory of supply and demand.

All finished goods are produced using commodities. Commodities fall under many different categories, but certain categories of commodities are required to produce certain categories of goods (i.e. all swords (except for the foil) require minerals but many of the products will need many different commodities of different types).

All shoppe products also require labor to be manufactured. On subscriber oceans, this labor is provided by subscribed pirates; on doubloon oceans, a player needs a labor badge to provide work. Labor is provided by playing the appropriate crafting puzzle.

If a shoppe or stall is hiring, there is a Help wanted button on the right shoppe panel. Clicking this button allows you to take the job as well as see the wages offered. Different wages are usually given for different grades.

There are three grades of labor: basic, skilled and expert. If you play a crafting puzzle, the quality of the labor you produce depends on how well you perform. For shoppes without puzzles, the quality is random.

Opening and managing a shoppe

Anyone can open their own stall in a bazaar with some amount of PoE, which is determined by the type of stall, the population of the island, and the island's tax rate. On subscription oceans, a pirate must be a subscriber to open a stall, on doubloon oceans, an additional 10 doubloons are required to open a stall.

To open a shoppe you must first obtain a deed, usually from the governor of the island. All shoppes start off as construction site, which may only be placed by the governor of the island. Once the construction site is put up the governor immediately recieves the deed to the construction site, the deed may be traded straight away or the governor may keep it. After a shoppe is finished being built it may then start trading and rent will be required from this point onwards. As the space on an island is limited, shoppes are often sold for large sums.

Palace shoppe

The palace shoppe (also the fort shoppe) is a feature used on both doubloon oceans and subscriber oceans. On doubloon oceans, it is used for the purchase of badges. On all oceans, the palace shoppe is used for the purchase of pets, as well as a selection of awards and trinkets. You can also wrap a present at the shoppe. Also various seasonal items can be purchased there from time to time.

How to...

... Paint a house

To use a paint brush, you must be the owner or roommate of a house you wish to paint. The paint brush can be found under the "Miscellaneous" section of the Booty panel. Clicking on the paint brush and selecting "Paint" will bring up a window allowing you to preview your building painted with any of the color combinations possible. To finish painting, choose the "Paint" option on the preview window.

Note that housing does not currently have a hold, therefore you will not be able to order paint directly from a stall or shoppe and transfer it in later. Do not pre-order paint from an apothecary. You will be given the option to buy the necessary amount from the dockside at the lowest prices available on the island. If there is not enough paint available dockside the "Paint" button will be greyed out. The button will also be greyed out if the color selected is the current color.

Shoppe types

An estate agent is a building placed on a colonized island. It is used for shoppe upgrades and downgrades and is generally owned and managed by the flag governing the island. After an island is fully colonized, the estate agent is rarely used. It is unique in that it is the only building that acts as both a shoppe and an infrastructure building.

Non-subscriber/doubloon-free items

There are a number of items available for non-subscriber use (on the blue oceans) and for no doubloon delivery charge (on the green oceans). These include some basic clothes (like the bandana), swords (foil), bludgeons (rope coils), and mugs (goblet). On a subscription ocean all furniture, housing, and portraits are also available to non-subscribers.

Shoppes vs. Stalls

Shoppes are charged more in weekly tax than stalls, but offer several advantages for the cost.

  • Size - Shoppes are larger, offering more storage space than stalls. This is most important for Shipyards, which can manufacture any size ship, whereas a stall cannot hold enough wood to make merchant galleons, war frigates, or grand frigates.
  • Location - Shoppes have their own storefront, so if someone is looking for an ironmonger, say, they probably won't check the bazaar first, and so draws more pirates in for labor and sales. Shoppes are imediately available from the minimap
  • Managers - Shoppes can have up to five managers; a deluxe stall can only have two.
  • Name - All shops have unique names, whereas stalls are named based on the stall owner (e.g. Poseidon's Ironmonger stall).
  • Deed - Unlike stalls, shoppes have a deed that can be traded just like a ship deed. This allows a pirate to use the store deed portrait item in portraits.
