The Puzzle Pirates community is a wide and varied collection of people. Crews, flags, and hearties help make up your in-game social network. The forums and the YPPedia are just a small part of your out-of-game social circle.

Crews are the basic unit of social organization. People in a crew can board each other's ships and go pillaging and take other voyages together. There are six permanent ranks (in addition to the temporary rank of jobber), described in the pages linked at right. Each rank gives all of the powers of the previous rank(s) as well as extra abilities. A title can be assigned to members.
Crew Articles
Crew articles are the rules by which a crew divides booty shares among its members and jobbers after pillaging, its statements, and its politics. These articles are set by a crew according to the decision-making system dictated by their Crew Politics. A crew's articles are viewable on its info page (except the private statement to non-crew members), and the booty share is listed on the crew's notice board listing when a it is hiring jobbers, so that people can decide whether to job with that crew.

A pirate's hearties are those he or she likes enough to add to his or her hearty list. This list, which can be found in the crew panel on the sunshine widget, allows the pirate to know if his or her hearties are on at a glance. Hearties are also underlined in game scenes to make them easier to find. Hearties are also exempt from the usual do not disturb restrictions. Up to 250 hearties may be on the list at any one time.
On subscriber oceans, non-subscribers can not invite others to be their hearties, but may accept a hearty request.
Players add hearties by clicking on another character and selecting "Invite to be your hearty," at which point a confirmation screen is sent to the player in question.

A flag is a collection of crews who ostensibly work together for mutual benefit or protection, but it is actually a social grouping more than anything else. They are the largest political units in the game. Flags are the only political units that can blockade an island to take control of it, and flags are also the only groupings that may go to war with one another.
Flag Structure
By game mechanic, there are three ranks that may be awarded to any individual pirate within a flag.
- Monarch - The monarch of a flag is usually the one in charge of said flag, though this is not always the case, and they may be merely a figurehead depending on the way the flag has been organized. Initially, the crew captain who creates the flag is the monarch, though the monarchy can be passed along. It is possible to have a flag without a monarch.
- Royal - A royal member of a flag will have the title of Prince or Princess, and shall vote on all flag issues. An autocratic flag can exist only by not having royalty, leaving the monarch with the sole vote on those issues.
- Titled - A titled member of a flag is either a lord or lady of the flag. This position provides no advantage or additional functionality and is purely ceremonial.
Royalty and titled member positions may be proposed by any royal within the flag using the "Propose Status Change" option on the flag page. A person may be stripped of their title by proposing to change their status to "Member". Any status changes must be voted on by the royalty. A simple majority is necessary for the change to carry.

... Create a flag
The Captain of a crew may create a flag if the crew has achieved Established or greater fame. On doubloon oceans, there is also a cost of 20 doubloons and the captain must have a Captain badge for the function to be available.
