Oceans

An ocean is the world and gaming environment in Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates. In more technical terms, an ocean is a game server. Puzzle Pirates currently has seven separate regular player servers and one testing server. A player account may have characters on each ocean; however, each ocean maintains a separate, independent, and unique environment with separate pirates, stats, inventories, and possessions. Currently, there are two different types of oceans and two different ways to pay for them. Both subscriber and doubloon oceans offer unlimited free play of the basic duty puzzles, and of carousing and crafting puzzles on specific days of the week. In order to have unlimited access to all puzzles all the time, the ability to achieve crew ranks higher than cabin person, and use better quality weapons and clothing, pirates must subscribe on the subscriber oceans, or buy appropriate badges with doubloons on the doubloon oceans.

Doubloon vs. subscription

On a Subscription Ocean you may play indefinitely, however, in order to use the for-pay features you must pay a fee to gain access to all those features for a month, quarter, or year. More info on Subscriptions.

On Doubloon Oceans you can play for free indefinitely, individual items and privileges are unlocked by paying with Doubloons, which can be purchased with real money. More info on Doubloons.

Billing

You can play Puzzle Pirates for free. There is no limit on your ability to board ships and play any of the basic ship puzzle games (sailing, carpentry, bilge, and gunnery) for as long as you like. There are days of free play for the remaining crafting, parlor, and social puzzles on a rotating basis.

However, there are certain features in the game that may require payment if you wish to try them. Generally, you are able to pay for these features in one of two ways:

  • If you play Puzzle Pirates on Cerulean (the blue ocean), you must buy subscription time before you can take advantage of the for-pay features.
  • If you play Puzzle Pirates on Meridian, Emerald, Jade, or Opal (the green oceans) you must buy doubloons, our ingame micropayment currency, before you can take advantage of the for-pay features.

The doubloon exchange

The doubloon exchange.

The doubloon exchange allows members to exchange PoE for doubloons that other players have previously purchased, without going to individuals and haggling in a trade order interface. Doubloon exchanges are currently only found on doubloon oceans. Note that one cannot purchase doubloons from Three Rings for PoE, as doubloons only enter the ocean through the doubloon order interface, or Ocean Master-hosted events.

If you access the interface at a cashbox or bank, you have two simplified options in addition to the full doubloon exchange view. (Pictured right)

  • Buy Doubloons (Easy) - This pops up a window allowing the player to buy doubloons from another player at the lowest available price. There is also a button that allows the user to buy doubloons from Three Rings with a credit card.
  • Sell Doubloons (Easy) - This pops up a window allowing the player to sell doubloons to another player at the highest available price.
  • Doubloon Exchange - Provides a sophisticated way to buy or sell doubloons. You can inspect other players' current buy and sell offers.
  • Buy Doubloons securely. - Takes you to the buy doubloon page on the billing server.

When buying doubloons with a credit card, you are taken to a web page.
