Cleaning up trinket display box

Could I get some help with my trinket display box thing? It looks horrible =/ My page: http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/Iceicebaby you have permission to fix it if you wish, or just tell me. :D Thanks

Better now ? You can make the table occupying the whole width by using {{My trinkets/start|width=100%}}, but I'm not sure that it looks better. --Alfwyn 23:54, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Reply: Much better, thanks a heap :) Is the trick just putting them closer together, with no spaces? I didn't notice much difference, and I prefer it like that, less space used ^^

Aye, removing the blank lines between the trinket templates was the main fix. That this is necessary may be a bug, I'm trying to find out why this is the case. The other thing was closing the whole table, that is putting a |} at the end, to match the {| at the start of the trinket box. --Alfwyn 12:45, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Is there a place i can suggest ideas

I want to know if there is a way that i can give YPP some ideas on puzzles and such

because i have an idea for a puzzle so yea i havnt been on yppedia much but i have many ideas so yea not sure how or if i get an awnser but ill try and figure it out XD thank you for reading this if you did and yea so thats the end

If you'd like to propose new puzzles or modifications to existing ones, the place to go is the Game Design forum. The announcement thread has the rules for this forum.
There are many resources which may be helpful:
  • The List of ideas already given approval by the Game Developers. However this is not a delivery schedule and as the game gets updated, some of the ideas may become obsolete or unnecessary.
  • The Anti-list of ideas disapproved by the Game Developers. Note that they're not totally ruled out but the Game Developers often had some fairly strong objections. Any discussion on such ideas should start by addressing these objections, although the Game Developers are fairly firm on philosophical objections e.g. personal firearms in Puzzle Pirates.
  • Commonly discussed ideas is a fairly comprehensive listing of previously proposed ideas. Generally the Game Developers have not posted approvals or disapprovals of these ideas.
  • Search to see if your idea has come up before. You may prefer to use Google or some other search engine that you're more comfortable with. You can ask for help with searching in this thread:
http://forums.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=6605
Generally you can expect a response within 24 hours, though hard to find answers to questions may take slightly longer.
If there's an existing discussion thread to reply to and it's older than a few months, be sure to call attention to the age of the thread. Putting the word "Bump" at the start of your reply will do.

can i upload designs of islands from the create a island thing???

i made some kool island s on the create thingy and i wanna know if i can show them to the people who run puzzle pirates and maybe ask if they could add it

There is a dedicated thread on the forums for showing and getting feedback on player created islands: Beat the Champs - Redux. As for uploading the designs, have a look at Hosting_files. --Alfwyn 17:47, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Clear

When exactly should the {{Clear}} tag be added? I see it at the end of a lot of pages and as far as I understand its usage has no visible effect at the end of a page. Maybe it is a remaining tag from times when the stub template was not automatically aligned below the pirate box? -- Kamuflaro 23:27, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Whenever you need to clear aligned images or tables. It's a br clear=all. --Guppymomma 23:41, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, to sum up: The Clear template moves the next element down past any images or alike, that could be getting in the way. Due to the stub templates having been added a Clear tag at some point all Clear tags at the end of stubed pages (right before the stubing) are now obsolete -- Kamuflaro 22:59, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

Baltic Angels third-person tag

Is the Baltic Angels page now sufficiently third-personly worded to remove the tag? Or does it need more adjustment? (Some of the content seems un-useful to me, but that is a separate issue which I will discuss with the captain when time permits)

I think it was, because the 1st person passages were not marked as being copied and pasted from the crew's statements. I took the freedom to edit the other passages slightly by wording and removed the tag. If you want to copy and paste the promotion criterias from the private statement I would mark them as such, maybe like: Private Statement - Promotion Criterias -- Kamuflaro 10:04, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
Wow, that was quick! Thank you. And sorry for forgetting to add my signature above, I keep doing that.... --Lesleywalker 10:19, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Previewing template changes

I'm a bit confused sadly with the previewing of a template that inherits templates. Is there any speedy technique providing a preview to an example using the edited template? I don't want to flood the recent changes while learning to edit templates. -- Kamuflaro 19:53, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Nope. It's a bit of a bummer, but I usually apologize in the edit summary after my fifth edit or so.--Fiddler 21:46, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
The issue is that when a page calls a template, it calls the saved version, but the changes don't get saved on the template until you push "submit". The same applies even if a template's usage notes call the template itself. All I can suggest is to do a mock-up in the user namespace first, and try to keep attempts to a minimum. =) --Belthazar451 22:45, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Image History

If I wanted to change an image, I asume I simply upload a new version? What happens with the old version? Shouldn't certain types of images be archived in some form? -- Kamuflaro 18:25, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

When you upload a new version of an image, the old version is retained in the file history. For an example, take a look at this image page --Nicksterv 19:49, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Ah ok thanks, are there types of images where old versions are deleted manually rather than archived, like solo pirate images? -- Kamuflaro 20:13, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Yes, portraits and other images that don't have the historical value like the island build-up progression tend to have older versions deleted. However, with the update of our MediaWiki version several months ago, the software actually saves older versions so that admins are able to undelete them. The other reason why we remove old portraits is that due to the cache thing & uploading new versions, it's easy for new editors to get confused and accidentally hit revert to a previous one. Deleting older versions helps keep those incidents under control. --Guppymomma 20:59, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Ok thanks, quite an eloberative answer :) -- Kamuflaro 22:29, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Adding a "Contents" box to a page

I cannot seem to find what coding will add a contents box at the top of an article to hot link to the sections within an article. Is there a minimum number of headings before adding a contents box? Thanks

There's a minimum number before one will automatically appear, but you can force one to appear (in the place of your choosing also) using the command __FORCETOC__ (note those are double underscores). By the same token, you can suppress a contents box using __NOTOC__. --Belthazar451 03:58, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
It's 3 sections before it will appear. Note that it only appears for those who have enabled the option to show the TOC with 3 or more headings (unless it has been forced to appear). --Thunderbird 06:56, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Trinket lists

What would be reason against disallowing trinketlists on pirate pages? I'm asking because I intend to make a list for my pirate, but recently read up on why standard named shiplists are prohibited on pirate pages. Kamuflaro 23:50, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Too big, basically. No point in having a page which is two-thirds trinkets. They're allowed, they just need to be hidden if they're longer than twelve. --Belthazar451 01:54, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

I think I was unclear, let me quote Ponytailguy:

* They're impossible for anyone but the subject of the page to maintain,
which goes against the wiki tenet of pages being maintainable by the community.
* They're impossible for anyone to verify or confirm,
which goes against another basic wiki tenet.
* They rarely add much to the page in question.
(I mean, really... does it matter to you that
Weirdbeard's sloop is called the Ugly Cod?)
On the other hand, names of custom-renamed ships can be interesting
and impressive. Likewise, ship names (standard or otherwise) can be a functional
and perfectly valid part of a broader narrative or biography.
So I propose we set policy to say that pirate pages should not contain
lists of standard-named vessels.

All 3 points can be applied to trinkets too thus my question is: What would be speaking in favour of keeping our trinket lists? What makes us not ban them equally. An exception to this (like the custom named vessels) would be unique event reward trinkets. Kamuflaro 17:59, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Well, this would be stuff for the policy discussion page YPPedia_talk:Policies_and_guidelines. But I think such a policy would be a bad thing, primarily because trinkets are in widespread use on pirate pages today, disallowing them would upset a lot of people. --Alfwyn 18:55, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
Also, unlike vessels, it's possible for pirates to display a trinket for anyone to see. Ditto for pets. It'd even be possible (though rather tedious) to display them all, one after the other. --Belthazar451 20:22, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks you gave me what I was looking for; quite an assurance that such a rule will not be added, at least not with community support; we'd just vote against ^^ Kamuflaro 20:49, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Pet Lists

Is it possible to display more than one pet on a pirate biography page and if so how? --Petty

Yes, by using the My pets template - it functions in basically the same way as the My trinkets template. You can find an example of the template in use here, if that'd help. =) --Belthazar451 21:01, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Redlinks in crew/flag infoboxes, yes or no?

When filling out an info box on a new crew or flag page, if a pirate's YPPedia page doesn't exist and I don't intend to create it, should I create redlinks or just leave the pirate name bare? (This question is triggered by a recent edit to Nautica Dominico which I created.) --Lesleywalker 10:05, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

My vote goes for leaving them as red links. For some reason, Addyrielle has been going around de-linking everything, but the point of red links is to go "hey! make me!". --Belthazar451 12:42, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
That's what I had in mind when I created the pages, and it's certainly the way things are done over at Wikipedia. But with so many pirates in the game that will probably never have YPPedia pages , I guess it's a grey area. --Lesleywalker 06:07, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

How do I link my newly created real life gathering announcement page to main YPPedia page?

Ahoy!

I have created a new page detailing our upcoming real-life gathering in Melbourne Australia (refer page Melbourne Meetup 2009). We would like to add this link to the "other links" at left hand side of main YPPedia page - same as the North Carolina meetup, however the "Real-life gatherings" page, where I believe the link should be added, is barred from editing - at least for me.

Do we need to get assistance from a Dev or Sysadmin for this? Can you please advise who/how/method to approach/fix?

Many many thanks in advance!

Hilbee on Midnight

--Hilarybasile 03:44, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

I've added your gathering to the appropriate page. -- Faulkston 04:29, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
Is there something extra special about the North Carolina meetup? That one has a link in the "Other links" section (left-hand panel, down from "YPP home" etc) so why wouldn't the Melbourne meetup be listed there too?
OK done. I poked around the MediaWiki namespace. -- Faulkston 05:48, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Invalid password, but only in Yppedia

I'm trying to figure out why Yppedia is rejecting my password. It's my forum account, false_dmitri. The password worked last time I tried it, when I edited a race entry. It still works on YPP forums. But it no longer works here. The only change since last time is stronger antivirus/firewall software. I'm able to log in fine with the account I'm using for this question. What could be causing this problem?

The problem is not with any antivirus/firewall software you are using. We have been experiencing this problem for a little while now and it is being investigated. Hopefully this problem will be rectified soon. -- Cedarwings (talk) 04:11, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
From discussion in the forum, it appears to be affecting only usernames with underscores. --Lesleywalker 19:46, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Two Hide/show boxes?

Hello, trying to have two hide/show boxes on my personal page Lowstandrd however, the second box keeps being "hidden" inside the first. I want it to list Event Awards hide/show. Then, separately below that, Trinkets show/hide. Can this be done? Not sure what I'm missing. Thanks mates. Lowstandrd 22:29, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Hey there. The issue is the show/hide template does not permit the vertical pipes from table code to be in the content. You could try converting your sub-pages into gallery code, which works fine. Fair winds! --Sagacious (talk) 23:43, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
That's not it at all. The problem is a lack of a close table tag (or something else like that) in the Event Awards sub-page, and as soon as I can figure out where in the code it's missing, I'll add it in. Show/hide boxes don't like tables being directly inside them, but when you're transcluding a sub-page, then it works just fine. --Belthazar451 00:02, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
There we go - you were missing the <small> close tags, which had the effect of breaking a <div> somewhere, which was confusing the wiki software. In my opinion, though, the page could do with something of a re-work - to me, it looks kind of ugly, and the coding is even worse. --Belthazar451 00:23, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
Nice catch. I ran the table code through my syntax checker and it came back as all tables were closed so I assumed it wasn't a missing open/close. --Sagacious (talk) 00:35, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Images missing: Atlantean band and Engraved atlantean band

HELP When I looked at my trinket page today, the Atlantean band and Engraved atlantean band images are missing. See this link: http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/Blackgold/Trinkets

I checked other pirates pages and their images are missing as well. I did a search on them and found that there are missing everywhere: http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/Atlantean_band

The image for the atlantean band was recently updated to include the new light blue color. Browsers that still have the old image cached will display it improperly. To clear your browser cahe from the old image, reload the page it appears on while holding the CTRL-key (that's for IE, with firefox try holding down the SHIFT key while reloading). --Alfwyn 15:14, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

new trophys

when do new trophys come out can you tell me please thanx —Preceding unsigned comment added by Odis2 (talkcontribs)

New trophies are usually added with each release that includes new things such as puzzles and events. We are never usually told when new trophies are added. --Sagacious (talk) 23:00, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Tan sacred skull image

The new CI trinket, the sacred skull, has a large red cross instead of the tan color. However, my pirate (Yarrmate) recently won one. How do I go about removing this cross? I tried changing the template but got the same thing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Birdmanjon (talkcontribs)

Ahoy! The reason you're getting a big red X instead of a tan skull is that noone's ever found one before - the image is missing from the wiki, and modifying the template won't magically make it appear. =) Thankfully, with your help we can rectify this situation. You can either post a .png screenshot of this trinket somewhere, or wait until one of us manages to get a hold of you in-game to take our own screenshot, and we'll add the image to the wiki for you. Fair winds! --Belthazar451 22:11, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

Snake images

What is the link info for posting Cursed Isle Snakes on page?

There's a forum listing on the colors people have found but no box setup or direction as to what the template will be called for future creations? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Everclearboy (talkcontribs)

It's the same template as the other familiars. The primary colour is the snake's head colour, while the secondary is its nose colour. If it's not already uploaded, the inventory image of the snake needs to be uploaded at Serpent-primary-secondary.png, with the {{familiar image}} (Usage) tag. If you're not sure you can do this, just post a link or a screenshot to the forum thread. --Belthazar451 03:55, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
Ok, on closer inspection, you already had everything right, save that the image hadn't been uploaded yet. I uploaded it for you. --Belthazar451 03:57, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

show/ hide box for pets

I have been instructed to add a show/hide feature on my pets table. I have gone to the wiki link suggested, searched on google and looked on other pirate pages but am still unsure how to do this. I used the code I found on the wiki page but am not sure exactly where it goes in the table. I have tried MANY differnt ways and each time I preview it is not right. I am not sure what I am doing wrong or where to look for the answer. Currently I'm just considering deleting the pets altogether so my page will be removed from the messed up pirate pages list. My pirates obscene amount of cats is somewhat of a joke in game and I feel removing them would take away from the point of making a page in the first place. Thank You, Talulah

aka Talulu

I put the pets into a show/hide box. -- Faulkston 03:14, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Long caption texts for small images

Piraten-Gutschein

This problem occured on the german wiki, but I guess I will reach a larger audience of knowledgeable folk here. To the left is the problematic caption text (Piraten-Gutschein), which gets cut off, in varying fashion, by all browsers I tested. I looked at the resulting html code and produced a kind of hack that's displaying pleasingly enough at Schlange. Anyway, I would like a cleaner solution, since the source in all it's uglyness looks like:

<div class="thumb tleft"><div class="thumbinner" style="width:50px>[[Image:Trinket-Pirate_Ticket.png|Piraten-Gutschein]]<div class="thumbcaption">Piraten-<br>Gutschein</div></div></div>

Not very easy to change for the inexperienced editor and quite dependent on specific names used in the CSS (which is probably still better than expanding that code). Any suggestions ?

--Alfwyn 14:59, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Use gallery, it seems to handle it better. Images have to be the same size though if they're small. --Guppymomma 16:03, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

I like that solution - thanks. --Alfwyn 16:48, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

How do I update my crew's portrait?

We recently got a New portrait for the crew, but when I changed the portrait flag to yes, a christmas image unexpectedly came up and I do not see any way to change this. How do I update it? We'll probably do the flag's portrait soon as well, so I would like to know how. --Plng 11:34, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Go to your the image (click on it via the crew's page), scroll down a little, and you'll see a text link saying upload a new version of this image. Click that and it will be like a normal upload. You may have to reload the page proparly first for it to show up. Edit, if you still cant do it, leave me a message and I'll do it :) --Lcawte 11:27, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
It looks like the Christmas portrait is the portrait of the crew of the same name on the Hunter Ocean. Would uploading a new version affect the portrait displayed in their infobox? --Jenhonk 11:36, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Thank ye, Lcawte. @Jenhonk: It's the same crew.--Plng 11:38, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Bumping up old thread here, but: no it's not. You've replaced the portrait for a completely different crew. Even if it's run by the same people, it's still a different crew with its own portrait. I'll fix it, but take care with disambiguated names in future that you don't overwrite another crew's portrait. --Belthazar451 21:34, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Ability to edit typos, clarify misconceptions on the Greeter wiki documentation

There has been some disagreement among Sage greeters regarding what is and is not appropriate to ask on /gr. However, the greeter wiki pages have been locked. Who is in charge of maintaining the wiki pages for greetership? Tonyanator (tkp42) and Sedna (oceansadness) would like to suggest some changes to make the page more user friendly for new greeters, as well as for more seasoned greeters who have questions about the use/abuse of /gr. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tkp42 (talkcontribs)

The greeter chat rules have been moved to the Official namespace, which falls under the exclusive domain of the Ringers and OMs. That said, the list of rules in the wiki is simply a write-up of what the rules are, not the definition of the rules - if that makes any sense. If all you're suggesting is a re-wording of what's there rather than any change of the rules, your best bet is probably to start a new thread on the YPPedia Community board. --Belthazar451 23:39, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
