august edit notes

Epi, I rolled out your changes because I was in the middle of a major edit. They were, I believe, the addition of the pig and lion graphics. The pig went into the table nicely, but separate pictures for each type of big cat was something for which I didn't plan. I'm more than willing to work on it, though, if you have suggestions. --AtteSmythe 15:44, 2 August 2006 (PDT)

You also rolled over Thunderbird's edit of sound descriptions (apparently Big Cats make the same sounds as Cats), but I have no suggestions on the multiple Big Cat images. Technically, they're just different "colors" of Big Cat, so they're not completely necessary... --Rixation(t/c) 15:47, 2 August 2006 (PDT)
Yep, I missed that edit. Gads, how I hate the conflict edit page. --AtteSmythe 15:49, 2 August 2006 (PDT)
Whenever I get the "conflicting edit" warning, I just open another tab with the Recent Changes page, see what got changed, then append that to my edit before saving. Either way, on thinking a bit more about the table, the "Sounds" column doesn't necessarily need the redundant pet name, it could simply list the sound that's given, just to condense it. As it is, 800x600 resolution with that table does...odd things. --Rixation(t/c) 15:56, 2 August 2006 (PDT)
That's exactly what I did, but I didn't know the time at which I'd started editing, and there's no way to find out. So I only diffed the last edit instead of the previous one. I added some nowrapping to the sounds column. Feel free to play with it, I'm done for today. --AtteSmythe 16:01, 2 August 2006 (PDT)

Is the latest addition on the top line regarding the furniture items necessary, since they are already in the "See Also" section? Seems very redundant. The same question also applies to the latest entry on Animal. --Rixation(t/c) 13:20, 6 August 2006 (PDT)

The 'This article refers to' should probably have familiar added to it, as well. --AtteSmythe 15:32, 6 August 2006 (PDT)

Governors and pets

Conquest tells me that she can have 5 pets that can roam the isle. --Piplicus

It's already in the article: An island's governor can set up to 5 pets to roam outside on the island. --Thunderbird 12:02, 13 August 2006 (PDT)
Sorry, I fail. I did actuallt try to read it, I did, honest! --Piplicus

Rat Colors

There are more than 7 primary rat colors. This picture: http://www.dracolair.com/ypp/6rats.jpg

shows 6 colors (not including yellow & white, also the brown is definately of a lighter smokey-brown color than the example given). Is the russet colour the one missing?.

Thanks for this comment - I would've missed the darker brown one if not for it. There appear to be nine colors, identical to the cat's secondary, and with the addition of black. I renamed "tabby" to "tawny" for the rat, since the definition fits and it seemed much more appropriate. --AtteSmythe 14:31, 15 August 2006 (PDT)

Individual Pet pages

Shall I go ahead with creating individual pages for each pet, or just redirect them to here? If I can get colour charts for each they would be at least as useful as the trinket pages. --Angelbeaver (talk) 16:41, 15 August 2006 (PDT)

Color charts for everything but the elephant (in progress) are already posted in the table. I think you're right that the pages for individual pets could be as useful as pages for individual trinkets. --AtteSmythe 16:44, 15 August 2006 (PDT)
Err, Thats a go ahead right?--Angelbeaver (talk) 17:22, 15 August 2006 (PDT)
As far as I'm concerned, aye. If someone disagrees, they'll mark it with a potential delete, and we'll have a discussion as a community. I think it'll be fine, though. --AtteSmythe 19:20, 15 August 2006 (PDT)

Limited Edition Pets

I added a separate area for limited edition pets, rather than leaving the simple note under cats. Major price difference, and limited time, made me feel it deserved a separate section. --Sashamorning 07:45, 26 October 2006 (PDT)

I think that's a very good call, and clean implementation. Thanks! --AtteSmythe 10:08, 26 October 2006 (PDT)

Time for someone with a lot of PoE buy the White Elephant and add it. --Arminius 21:46, 14 June 2007 (PDT)

/me shudders at doing the white elephant colors graphic. Maybe this weekend I can find the time to do it. --Guppymomma 22:04, 14 June 2007 (PDT)
I'm just obsessed and it was easier than I thought as I could use the template. --Guppymomma 22:19, 14 June 2007 (PDT)

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that even though the doubloon price list shows two more limited edition pets, they shouldn't be put on the wiki until they're seen. I've already made that change. Sashamorning 14:18, 20 June 2007 (PDT)

I just found the following 'My pet' templates GCPP big cat and Crookshanks. I didn't even know they existed before. --Alfwyn 12:37, 1 March 2008 (PST)

Crabs

The generic name for a crab is Karkinos just as the generic name for a dog is Dog. Should we adjust the table to call it Karkinos rather than "crab"? --Barrister 11:40, 6 February 2008 (PST)

I just put crab as I thought that Karkinos was what the user had named it. I do agree that does sound more appropriate. Klostro 11:46, 6 February 2008 (PST)
Just as a heads up, Wikipedia states that Karkinos was the name of the crab that bit Heracles' heel in his battle with the Lernaean Hydra, but was crushed under Heracles' foot in the midst of battle. With this in mind and the ringers using greek mythology all the time, the crab is most likely called Karkinos, and not crab. (Just as a heads up) --Makingpoe 1:18, 6 February 2008 (PST)

Small Dog

Hi! I don't want to break the page, and I don't know how to add small dog, but there are some pics: [[Image:[SmallDogInv.png]]] [[Image:[Smalldog-bluegrey.png]]]

There are also some more pics in this thread =). Hope this helps! Adrielle =) 07:27, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Persimmon Rats and small dog

Hi. We need to add some sort of persimmon rat picture and small dog section as Adrielle said. I don't know the name of the rat but they are part of the special for the release of Crimson like the mala-rat. Thanks, Ceary. Ceary 00:57, 30 July 2009 (EST)

The new rat color is on the rat page =D Adrielle =) 08:17, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
I'll do this as soon as I remember and have the time. That said, there's no special name for the persimmon rat, though I've heard people call it persimmo-rat on the pattern of mala-rat. Thing is, mala-rat comes from mala-cat, which is itself a pun on Malachite. There's no similar pun for the persimmon rat, so I think we'll just call it "persimmon rat" on the pattern of "black cat" and "black dog". --Belthazar451 23:23, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Stout Hound?

I know that the Stout hound is mentioned in the dog page but the black dog it on here and there... so shouldn't we help those who wanta see all the pets have an easier chance of seeing them all?

Can we include a pic of the dog and this description please?? What do you think? I don't know how to do that...

The limited edition black/tawny stout hound was available around St. Patrick's Day 2009 at the palace shoppe for 50,000 Pieces of Eight, and, on doubloon oceans, 50 doubloons. Ceary 19:05, 05 August 2009 (EST)

For that we'd need a screenshot of stout hound in-game. Do you have one, or know a pirate who does? --Belthazar451 23:23, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
This is Ellenya's: Pets-Stout hound.png Adrielle =) 02:29, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

I added the Stout Hound. I hope it's alright that I also re-ordered the limited edition pets in order of when they were made available (earliest to latest). --Jenhonk 03:28, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Cool =) It looks fine to me =D Adrielle =) 03:48, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Golden Sheep

I added the golden sheep to the limited edition so everyone knows bout it. I hope I did it right. Please edit it if it's not fully correct. S: I made a bad error . but fixed it. Sorry.. Coding can be complicated when it comes to tables. Thanks. Ceary 08:25, 25 August 2009 (EST)

It looks fine to me =D - I just took the color table link off because the other limited edition pets that only come in one colour didn't have the link to a colour table. Adrielle =) 12:34, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Not specific to the golden sheep, but the different width of the images for the limited pets make the table look untidy. The other pets use a 100px width, can this be done for the limited pets too, or do we need more pixel? The White Elephant and the long name of the golden sheep are currently the limiting cases. --Alfwyn 13:05, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Actually, the limiting cases are the excessive amount of space around the mala-cat and mala-rat images - I've been meaning to trim them for a while, but have never gotten around to it. The black and white elephant images are only eight pixels too wide - they can easily lose some. The sheep, admittedly, could do with a shorter name. On the other hand, some of them are too narrow, probably because the person who uploaded them got the dimensions backwards (they're mostly at least 100px tall). They'll need a new screenshot altogether. The small dog as well. I do, however, heartily agree that they should be made a consistent width. --Belthazar451 21:23, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Golden Bunny

New pet for the lunar rabbit year. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Xyphon (talkcontribs)

Ghost puppy

Where does the name "ghost puppy" come from - some announcement? Because Haunted Seas names it "ghost small dog" and it appears it is initially named "Small Dog" when found. --Alfwyn 22:00, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

Black/black/black elephant

Just wondering - with the black elephants that come from black boxes, I'm pretty sure that both cloth colors are also black (although there are some green pixels, but these seem to be mixed into the other colors too!). Should these be added as a separate pet, or should a note be added to the black elephant row? --Adrielle ♥ =) 02:11, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

alphabetical order ?? (Y/N)

Wouldn't it make more sense to keep these pets in alphabetical order (within their respective sections, that is)? It would certainly make it easier to find the specific pet one is looking for. Wanted to get a consensus from the Yppedians before going ahead with this. Thanks! -- Franklincain (t/c) 11:43, 9 July 2012 (PDT)

I think the entire thing needs to be overhauled, personally, because even with the alphabetization, it's still kind of long and not immediately useful. I think instead of all the limited edition colors listed separately, it might make more sense to put those LE colors (if not already there), and then put a notation next to the main pet that it was once available in those LE colors. (i.e. take off the extra cat colors, like wine, etc, and put a note next to the cat, which would let people know to go look at the cat page for more info). --Fannon 11:57, 9 July 2012 (PDT)
Thanks.  ;-)   I think your point also leads into (at least partly) my next idea... -- Franklincain (t/c) 12:39, 9 July 2012 (PDT)

split "available" in two

The list of available pets should probably be split into two sub-lists: one of pets available for direct purchase; the other of those "available" pets that are actually random rewards. Thoughts? -- Franklincain (t/c) 12:10, 9 July 2012 (PDT)

Cancelling, in favor of re-org (next section)... -- Franklincain (t/c) 13:12, 9 July 2012 (PDT)

Reorganization

That is: all special types of "big cat" would be nested underneath "Big cat"; the ghost rat would likewise be nested under (basic) "Rat"; and so on. -- Franklincain (t/c) 13:11, 9 July 2012 (PDT)

I've uploaded the re-org. -- Franklincain (t/c) 14:07, 11 July 2012 (PDT)

I have protected the page from editing while this discussion is resolved. All input is welcome, and needed. The wiki is a community-driven resource, and edit-wars and constant reversions are not considered productive. Once we have reached consensus as to the layout of the page, I will implement it, and then un-protect the page. --Fannon 07:04, 13 July 2012 (PDT)

As someone who frequents the pet page often, I find the reorganization of animals (by type) to make much more sense this way. *thumbs up*--Dexla 07:42, 13 July 2012 (PDT)

While this new layout is easier to follow, I think the previous "Available pets" table should stay, perhaps just reorganize the "Limited edition pets" section by type (all cats, dogs etc grouped together). -- Kasukas 08:01, 13 July 2012 (PDT)

I've been thinking about how to distinguish "available" pets from "limited edition". The problem I see is, not all "available" are "available for DIRECT purchase". Example: I finally got a karkinos, years after Atlantis was released; and yet, this pet is not available for sale from the palace. I believe a more accurate way to distinguish "available" from "limited" would be to split the "available" group in half -- one would be "purchasable at palace", the other would be "available as random award". Thoughts? -- Franklincain (t/c) 08:08, 13 July 2012 (PDT)
I, personally, don't think it would help the readability of the page considering how few you'd be pulling out with that distinction. --Fannon 08:15, 13 July 2012 (PDT)

To improve the readability and searchability of the revised table, would it be advisable to split up this table into parent animal types? That is, "Big cat" and subtypes in first table, then "Cat" and its subtypes in a second table, then "Dog", (etc.), with each table having its own header? -- Franklincain (t/c) 08:31, 13 July 2012 (PDT)

(Edit): I've made these changes in one of my sandboxes. Please let me know what you think. (And as an aside, someone with better command over wiki-code for tables can fix the column widths; please let me know what additional code would be needed for that, if we all feel such a "tweak" would be warranted.) -- Franklincain (t/c) 09:31, 13 July 2012 (PDT)

I think the problem with the new version (and even the other option you've put in your sandbox), is that it is not immediately obvious which pets are currently (regularly?) available as opposed to only limited edition, which was one benefit that the previous version had. I'm not sure where a happy medium between the two lies. The only two options I see are (1) keeping the previous split between available and LE, but sorting the LE list according to type rather than date, or (2) getting rid of the LE's altogether and shunting all that info onto the individual pet pages (which is what I'd prefer, personally). --Fannon 09:43, 13 July 2012 (PDT)

Note: I've received a PM from a user who would prefer more distinction between available/LE. --Fannon 09:45, 13 July 2012 (PDT)
(Re: getting rid of the LE's altogether and shunting all that info onto the individual pet pages)... I could completely support this alternate. (Even if it would mean that I'd wasted so much effort re-organizing; I'm still perfectly happy having someone vote in favor of the Text-Slaughtering Chainsaw of Bloody-Red Editing.) -- Franklincain (t/c) 09:57, 13 July 2012 (PDT)
(Edit)... Fannon, is this more like what you have in mind, please? -- Franklincain (t/c) 10:13, 13 July 2012 (PDT)
Yes. Though obviously with a note at the top saying something like "info about LE pets on each pet page", etc. --Fannon 10:30, 13 July 2012 (PDT)
Well, yeah, I didn't put in the section header or intro sentence; just focused on the table of critters.  ;-)
Thanks, Fannon! (But we still need to hear more from others, please, to reach a true consensus.) -- Franklincain (t/c) 10:52, 13 July 2012 (PDT)
BTW, I've gone ahead and transcribed *ALL* (hopefully) of the limited edition pets into their respective "parent" archetype-pet pages. -- Franklincain (t/c) 21:05, 13 July 2012 (PDT)

I received a PM proposing that we move the limited edition pet info to its own separate page which has two benefits. One, it leave this main pet page looking much cleaner and serves the purpose of giving basic pet info in a much more orderly fashion. Two, it leaves a list of LE pets so that collectors can still have a checklist/reference point that doesn't require checking 12ish separate pages. I'm in favor of this, though I don't think that the separate LE page needs to be quite as detailed as what we currently have going on here (though that's a discussion for elsewhere). Opinions? --Fannon 16:45, 15 July 2012 (PDT)

Good idea...  ;-)
-- Franklincain (t/c) 17:04, 15 July 2012 (PDT)
A straight-up list wasn't at all what I was proposing. Note my use of the word "proposing". --Fannon 17:12, 15 July 2012 (PDT)
Understood. But we still could use this list.  ;-)
So regardless of what we decide to do -here-, I went ahead and made the list.
(Addendum: Since I'd been making various Lists articles anyway, the past few days -- names/adjective; furniture -- it makes sense to me that we should've had this pets list already...Hope I've not stepped on any toes by doing so... -- Franklincain (t/c) 17:38, 15 July 2012 (PDT)
I prefer User:Franklincain/sandbox2 with navigable headings and pets all in one place. The article is not unmanageably large. I think it would splinter things too much to relegate the LE pets only to those pages. It is much easier to refer people to one central place and easier for comparison. And I think that we should use <small> for all pet sounds. Chupchup 20:31, 15 July 2012 (PDT)

So... Is the verdict in, yet? Do we have a consensus? Just wondering where we stand with this issue. Thanks! -- Franklincain (t/c) 13:17, 19 July 2012 (PDT)

(Re-org) More than 3 or 4 "Sounds"...use "small" print?

The gator and penguin each have more entries for "Sounds" than they do for any other fields, making those two entries look artificially large. Within the version I've posted at my sandbox, I'm going to use the "<small>" tag for their "Sounds" cell, just to see if it looks better. If it does look better, would we want to do this for all of the entries (i.e. all pets)? Or would the consensus be to not use "<small>" at all? Just wondering...

-- Franklincain (t/c) 17:23, 13 July 2012 (PDT)

(Re-org) Color tables

I've updated User:Franklincain/sandbox3 to incorporate all the color tables that were missing. And I've added a blurb up top about not being able to select the color of the pets if you're not actually BUYING the pet (i.e. random pets have random colors). Thoughts on this newest draft, please? Thanks! -- Franklincain (t/c) 17:41, 15 July 2012 (PDT)

Black/Shadow Unicorn Pet

From series 3 black boxes...Haven't seen any of these, yet (except on the Notice Board's "ad space", that is). Any one gotten one, yet?

In any event, I presume the standard protocol for any new pet is "do not add into table, until actually seen in-game"...

-- Franklincain (t/c) 15:36, 9 July 2012 (PDT)

I met someone on Cerulean with one in game. I will attempt to hunt her down for screen/booty panel shots--Dexla 07:43, 13 July 2012 (PDT)

("Coming next season from the Un-History Channel -- Dexla, Unicorn Stalker!"  ;-)
Thank you, Dexla. -- Franklincain (t/c) 10:54, 13 July 2012 (PDT)

Black elephant

This is a really minor thing, but quoth the Black elephant section: Note: Only available during Halloween 2008-2010. Disregarding any updates to that information that might be needed re: black boxes (I honestly have no idea if you can get black elephants from black boxes or not; I haven't looked into it.) is it true that they weren't available during Halloween 2011? --Ladodal 15:49, 14 August 2012 (PDT)

karkinos

The karkinos pet has disappeared from the table of pets as far as I can see. Looks like part of the table was commented out, but the closing comment marker has been forgotten (thus commenting out the karkinos section up until the next comment block begins). Would someone who understands wiki tables and comments be able to help? Cheers. --Therobotdude 22:05, 17 September 2013 (PDT)

Done. It looks like there is always a line included for "Limited edition pets" of every type, but it is supposed to be commented out when not in use. There is already an LE Chocolate Hedgehog, so I just removed the start comment. Chupchup 23:18, 17 September 2013 (PDT)

Penguin colors

The penguin color link to karkinos palette, is that intended? --Clotho 11:38, 23 September 2013 (PDT)

Fixed. -- Franklincain (t/c) 11:48, 23 September 2013 (PDT)
Addendum -- FWIW, this accident appears to have happened when we implemented the new layout. -- Franklincain (t/c) 11:59, 23 September 2013 (PDT)
I wasn't sure if that needed a palette like the others or just the list. Thank you! --Clotho 17:21, 23 September 2013 (PDT)
