Following are the rules governing all Booty or No Booty shows.

Behaviour and Etiquette

The rules of etiquette follow basic common courtesy. Generally, be considerate of the hundreds of other people at the BoNB house and everyone can have a good time! Specifically, DO NOT:

  • Spam
  • Shout
  • Swear
  • Job, trade request, or hearty people that have not expressed any desire for you to do so
  • Harass or be rude to people
  • Pester Nobooty in /tells (He's pretty busy running the show!)
  • Disrupt the flow of the game significantly
  • Walk onto the stage
  • Make false bids (Legitimate bidders are willing and able to give away the PoE they bid.)
  • Make announcements unrelated to the show

The above behaviors are incredibly irritating to other spectators, contestants, and especially the host, Nobooty. Thus if you do break one of these rules, you can expect to be planked and barred from all episodes of Booty or No Booty forever.

Especially keep in mind how many other people are in the same house at the show. If everyone there talks a lot, it is impossible to see anything Nobooty says! So if you're the chatty type, bring a few crewmates to the show and chat about it over the /crew channel.

Nobooty does appreciate politeness, a sense of humor, efforts to speak decent English, and other acts of goodwill. These behaviors may even get rewarded occasionally!

Game Overview

Booty or No Booty is a game show involving one contestant on the hot seat and 22 possible prizes randomly placed into numbered boxes. The concepts are based on the television game show "Deal or No Deal" with a few extra twists. Only one of the 22 unique prizes is given away at each show - always to the last contestant on the hot seat, and always either the first or last box chosen. The game centers around narrowing down the possibilities of what might be in the chosen prize box by opening the other boxes and ruling those prizes out. The drama and intrigue comes from wondering what might be in the chosen prize box and the difficult decisions the contestant must face about how far to push his luck. Periodically, wealthy pirates can offer up large sums of PoE for the hot seat! The contestant must then decide to take the offer or continue with the game - Should he take the guaranteed PoE offer, or take his chances with the prize box? The prize box may contain the pet he's always wanted, or he may eliminate that possibility with the very next box he opens! To take the deal or not? Booty, or No Booty?

Coming to the Show

One hour before the game starts, an Oceanmaster or oceanmaster alt will send out a /broadcast across the ocean. This will typically point out when it is starting, what can be won, and a link to this page. On the more heavily-populated oceans, a location will NOT be given. To enter the event, you must come here (which you evidently already have done!), and go to Ajax's house at the proper location:

While the show doesn't start until an hour after the broadcast, you are welcome to come to the house early to socialize and wait as long as you abide by the etiquette rules above.

Between 5 and 15 minutes before the scheduled showtime, a golden ticket may be given out. Nobooty won't be telling how or when, so please don't ask!

Getting on the Hot Seat

There are two ways for a pirate to get on the hot seat.

The first contestant is chosen through the Golden Ticket Lottery. When Nobooty announces that it is time to trade in golden tickets, pirates that have won golden tickets may trade them in for a chance at the hot seat. The procedure for this is as follows:

  • When it is time, Nobooty will specifically ask for people with golden tickets to trade them to him. Don't bother attempting to trade in your ticket before Nobooty asks for tickets.
  • Once Nobooty announces that he is accepting tickets, generally several pirates will offer him trade requests simultaneously. Please just offer one trade request and patiently leave it outstanding until Nobooty gets to you. Nobooty notes the order that he receives the trade requests and uses the same order in accepting them and for the next step.
  • Once all tickets have been given to Nobooty, he sets up the same number of wrapped boxes with exactly one representing a trip to the hot seat. Pirates then choose a box for each ticket handed in, in the order that the tickets were handed in, and are instructed to not unwrap the box until everyone has received their box.
  • Finally, each Lottery player opens his box to reveal the Lottery winner. The meanings of the box contents are:
Contents Meaning What to do
Bandana You have not won Nothing
Bid ticket You have not won Nothing
Greeting card If it says to shout 'BOOTY', you will be in the hot seat Wait until Nobooty asks for you to shout out 'BOOTY!'
If it says that you've won a refund, you get a refund Wait until Nobooty asks for you to shout 'NO BOOTY!', and then wait until Nobooty trade requests you for the card in exchange for another golden ticket.
Other gift You haven't won, but you won a consolation prize! It depends. Listen to what Nobooty says.
  • The winner is invited on stage, and everyone else involved is now a normal spectator who may bid and try to win a surPRIZE.

The second way to get on the hot seat is to buy your way in. Periodically throughout the show, spectators are allowed to make bids for rights to the hot seat, and the current contestant may choose to accept or decline those offers. The procedure for this is as follows:

  • At the intervals specified in the following section, Nobooty will call for a round of bidding. Bidding only occurs at specific times in the show.
  • Two waves of bidding will actually occur at each bidding round. When Nobooty requests your first or initial bids, simply send him a /tell with the amount of PoE you would pay to be in the hot seat. After about 30 seconds, he will tell the audience to stop sending him bids, signifying that this initial wave of bidding is over.
  • First bids are not binding and simply exist as feeler bids. Nobooty will announce the highest bid amount of these first bids and bidders may look for the contestant's, crowd's, or another bidder's reaction.
  • Nobooty will then call for another wave of bidding, with this one more meaningful: making a bid means that you are both willing and able to give that amount of PoE to the contestant for his spot in the hot seat. Bids of under 100,000 PoE can again be made by sending Nobooty a /tell with the amount you'd like to bid, but bids of 100,000 PoE or higher must be made by the /pay command to Nobooty. Nobooty will return the PoE to you if your offer is not the highest or not accepted.
  • If the contestant accepts the highest bid (by shouting, "BOOTY!!"), then he walks away with that bidder's PoE and that bidder gets to replace him in the hot seat! (Note: the game does not restart when a new contestant takes the hot seat.)

Rounds of Play

Once the Golden Ticket Lottery has produced a hot seat inhabitant, the main game begins!

The contestant will first be given a chance to say a little about himself to introduce himself to the audience and soak up the limelight. Being at the center of attention with so many pirates watching is quite an experience!

After this his introduction, he will pick his one prize box for the show. Barring a last-second Switcheroo, this will be the prize won at the end of the show! It will be set aside unopened, and the rest of the boxes opened during the game only serve to provide information on what is in this prize box.

There are 22 different prizes and 22 different boxes, so each time a prize from another box is revealed, it means that prize cannot be won from the prize box! Nobody knows what is in each box, but this is what they collectively contain:

Tan bandana
5 PoE
Fish skeleton
100 PoE
Short hemp stack
400 PoE
Rum barrel furniture
Stiletto
2,500 PoE
Fancy wardrobe
7,500 PoE
Skull furniture
Flower trinket
Weapon
70,000 PoE
Throne
Full outfit
200,000 PoE
Pig or Turtle
Rare artifact
500,000 PoE
Familiar

In the first round, the contestant chooses 5 boxes to open and eliminate possible prizes. Each box and its contents are then removed. The contents of removed boxes can now no longer be won.

For example, if the player eliminated the familiar on the first box, not only can we deduce that the player's chosen box doesn't contain the familiar, but also that no other unopened boxes do. This means the present is lost for that episode, and nobody will win the familiar.

Thus, the contestant wants to eliminate the blue boxes - the boxes with a low value. If he can eliminate low values, then it means that his chosen prize box doesn't contain those items and that increases its value. Remember though, it's plain guessing: there's no way to know what you're eliminating.

After 5 boxes have been opened, spectators will have the chance to bid for the hot seat as described above. Bidders could alternatively be considered to be bidding for the prize box, since the contents of that box will be awarded to whoever is in the hot seat at the end of the show (keeping in mind the possibility of a Switcheroo). If a bid is accepted and a new contestant takes the hot seat, he does not get to choose a new prize box nor recover any of the items already eliminated - the new contestant is merely taking over for the old one. Of course the contestant in the hot seat can reject any bid he wants by saying, "no booty." In that case no PoE changes hands and the same contestant continues playing.

There are five more rounds of prize-eliminating, and in each round 3 more boxes are opened, leaving 14, 11, 8, 5 and finally 2 possible prizes. After each of these rounds there is a round of bidding.

surPRIZES

In addition to the main game show, Nobooty also offers a few surPRIZES to spectators during intermissions. These may occur in the middle of a round, during the bidding, or between rounds. Nobooty decides the timing of these intermissions generally at whim, and requesting them is frowned upon. Indeed, Nobooty seems to resent audience members requesting an intermission for a surPRIZE so much that asking for a surPRIZE makes Nobooty purposefully push the time back.

Typically, 5 or 6 (or maybe more) boxes of an unrelated colour will be on the board. A task will be declared, such as answering a trivia question, or doing something. The winner of the task (which may not actually be the first one to answer) gets to pick a box and win the contents. Occasionally, extra twists may occur, such as gambling the contents of the box or opting for a blind sum of cash.

Prizes from this section may range from trinkets to clothes to weapons (sword, mug, bludgeon) or even something very rare. Who knows? Probably not even Nobooty knows.

Switcheroo

Once there are only two boxes left and players have made their final bids to get in the hot seat, there is one last twist. The contestant will be given a choice of two special "Switcheroo" boxes, usually named after traditionally profound dilemmas such as choosing between "Decaf" & "Regular" or "Jelly" & "Jam". One of these boxes will allow the contestant to swap the prize box with the other remaining box if they wish. The other prohibits any such swapping.

If the player is allowed the swap and chooses to do so, he wins the contents of the last remaining box. Otherwise, he wins the contents of the box that was picked right at the start of the game.
