Unscrupulous RumRunners is a crew that sails the waters of the Meridian Ocean under the flag of Rum Soaked Devils. It consists of independent-minded pirates with diverse backgrounds and bad internet connections who work well together. Historically small, the crew has grown considerably larger and more active in recent months. Most crew members are enthusiastic pillagers, and several run profitable stalls and shoppes as well. The crew contains some highly skilled puzzlers but remains open to all. In addition, a number of dedicated poker players have been on the roster at various times.

Crew history

The crew was founded by longtime YPP player Mackus in February, 2007. Real-life commitments prevented him from putting enough time into the game, so on June 15 he transferred the crew to senior officer Captainflood with the hope of staying active. Unfortunately, he remained busy and was unable to keep up his game presence. Captainflood has remained captain since the transfer.

The traditional crew colors, purple and lime, remain in place to honor the crew founder. Maroon, navy, and white are heavily favored as well, but purple and lime is by far the most memorable combination.

From the beginning, the crew was a member of RiddleMakers, with Mackus holding the title of lord within the flag. Midway through January 2008, Unscrupulous Rumrunners switched to Brink of Dawn to take an active role in establishing a new flag. It has been a good fit, with the closer timezones allowing all BoD crews to benefit and reinforce each other. There were no hard feelings during the switch, and RiddleMakers remains a trusted ally and source of friends.

This crew once sailed the waters of the retired Viridian Ocean under the flag of Brink of Dawn.

Notable crew achievements

  • Hosted the 2007 Riddlemakers Halloween Scavenger Hunt
  • Late November 2007, sank Nitronline in a 5 vs 5 sloop fight during RiddleMaker's war with Vanguard (also disengaged from 2 earlier fights and had an undercrewed sloop sunk, but let's not go into that)
  • Achieved a time of 50 minutes from Terra to Spectre in the Jan 2008 Great Race (tied with 8 others for 5th place, but still pretty fast)
  • Reached 21st place on crew fame list around New Year 2008
  • Founded the flag King for a Day after leaving RiddleMakers, then disbanded it a day later to join Brink of Dawn
  • Hosted first official Brink of Dawn flagwide party, 2008 Valentine's Day+2
  • Participated in Temple of Hathor's alt flag war in February 2008; Captainflood eventually sank Lilartist (the host), but both Captainflood and Dai sank in separate fights vs. Booze
  • #1 Distilling trophy achieved by Dai on Feb 26, 2008

Public statement

Do ye seek to conquer all the isles of Viridian? Is yer pillage a failure if you earn less than 10000poe per sailor? Do ye wish for a fleet that can throw away war frigates like cannonballs? ...We're not at that point. Help us get there. :)

This is a crew dedicated to keeping the game fun for players of all levels. We look for people who stay because they enjoy the crew, not because they are top puzzlers, wealthy, or connected. There are no requirements here. If you want to play poker in the inn or sit back and chat, go right ahead. If you prefer puzzling on a ship, we've always tried to run the best pillages possible, fighting difficult opponents while bringing anyone willing to puzzle for the entire battle. Contrary to popular belief, it's possible to earn mountains of loot this way. Our current sloop record is around 135k from 4 ships plus expeditions.

This is not a crew for quick promotion. I expect to know people well before handing over the keys to the ships, and I seek officers who are committed to this crew. However, there are no stat requirements on top of that. If you know what to do with an officer badge, all you need is the captain's trust.

Even though we try to be inclusive, the crew has also been home to some of the top puzzlers in the game. As captain I have a good understanding of just about every puzzle, although some will always be beyond my ability. I'm more than happy to offer puzzling advice, and so are most crew members. New players are welcome here.

After a long period of no activity, I've resumed our regular pillages. Check the noticeboard between 5 and 10pm game time to spot them. :)
