A ship is a pirate's main resource for pillaging, trading, and transportation. Ships currently come in 11 different styles ranging anywhere from pillaging oriented ships, to merchanting oriented ships, to ships better designed for blockades or Atlantis runs. All ships in Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates are designed after historical pirate and naval ships from European and Asian sea faring cultures. Each ship has their own design benefits suiting it for specific missions such as gun armament, shot size, cargo capacity, and maximum crew size. Ships may be used in almost every aspect of Puzzle Pirates activity from island to island transportation, pillaging, trading, Brigand King hunts, blockades, sea monster hunts, greeter pillages, and on sea events.

A dhow is a traditional Arab sailing vessel with one or more lateen sails. In historical sea culture is primarily used along the coasts of the Arabian Peninsula, India, and East Africa. Dhows are similar to the cutter in that both ships are capable of moving four times per round and both able to sustain the same amount of damage. The dhow has more firepower (medium versus small cannon) but it is easier to achieve the maximum rate of fire on the cutter (8 cannons/2 gunning stations on the cutter versus 4 cannons and only 1 gunning station on the dhow).
The dhow's lack of gun to crew percentage and relative ease with which it can be damaged make it unpractical as a blockade ship outside of early buoy racing but making it a reasonable small to medium pillaging ship. When the dhow was released to production oceans with release 2007-05-24 it, along with its smaller counterpart the baghlah, became the first ship to require the use of lacquer in production making it considerably more expensive than ships with similar construction values.

The functionality of YPP's newest ship, the Xebec, has been opened up for discussion on the Puzzle Pirates forums. The Xebec is a medium sized ship requiring a larger than average crew of similar classed ships. Having the same influence as a war brig but requiring 15 more pirates to staff it makes it impractical for blockades. It's relatively small resistance to damage renders it unreliable for anything but the shallowist Atlantis run. It's larger crew capacity than the war brig does allow it to a fall as a practical pillaging ship between the war brig and war frigate but lacks the larger shot to compensate the increased enemy difficulty.

Did You Know?

Prior to release 2004-04-28, there was no such thing as grappling. The swordfight began when both ships occupied the same square on the battle navigation board. Also, before this, the edges of the board acted like winds that pushed ships back onto the board.
