Testing test message

Ahoy there! Thanks for experimenting with YPPedia. Your test edit (or edits) worked, and has been reverted. Please don't create entries on your own talk page, as this could be the early signs of insanity. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do, and take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia. Fair winds!

Ok - something that has been bugging me was I couldn't find a {{test}} template about that had the option of adding yer own line or two amongst the standard message. This will make it easier for me at least, when leaving the messages for our new YPPedians :-) --Sagacious (talk) 15:40, 10 May 2006 (PDT)
Go for using {{subst:test}} so they see the actual text if they hit edit to reply. --Guppymomma 07:56, 21 June 2006 (PDT)

Adminship

I'm supposed to tap you on the soulder to let you know I've nominated you for adminship. Consider yourself tapped. :) --Ponytailguy 16:55, 13 May 2006 (PDT)

How does Rmarzbarr qualify for a fame page?

Because Rmarzbarr is governor of Ostreum Island.--Fiddler 06:46, 14 May 2006 (PDT)

infobox links

We always link to crews and flags in infoboxes. The only exception is for individual pirates who are not notable. --Barrister 16:52, 15 May 2006 (PDT)

Urg I thought I read somewhere that it was better to de-link them if they didn't have articles already. My bad. --Sagacious (talk) 16:55, 15 May 2006 (PDT)

I don't know if i should leave the mensage here lol . sry you can erase it after i just want to say that i didn't know i already erased all names just leaved crew's info as well . sry mate i won't make problems.

Thank YE

Just wanted to say thanks for all your help today with my pages matrat

Thank you Sagacious, for being the first one to actually HELP me instead of deleting what I tried to do on wiki. Thank you for that. Mildina 10:41, 1 June 2006 (PDT)

Cool beans. I've purged his SO articles. --Ponytailguy 09:10, 20 May 2006 (PDT)

Photo image

I think I've got it. Hang on. --Ponytailguy 18:28, 20 May 2006 (PDT)

How's that? --Ponytailguy 18:31, 20 May 2006 (PDT)
I love it. I'm guna tweek colours. Reckon the wording is ok? --Sagacious (talk) 18:32, 20 May 2006 (PDT)
Because it involves original content, you should include an artist attribution. Probably piped in. You might also want to make it (the box) shorter. (Alternatively, I could make the icon bigger.) --Ponytailguy 18:39, 20 May 2006 (PDT)
Yeah - a 'taken by' insert? I think the box needs to be squished. Try cropping the top and bottom of the icon. I tried but it's too much effort to retain the transparency ;-) --Sagacious (talk) 18:42, 20 May 2006 (PDT)
I took door number 2. Icon's bigger now. :) --Ponytailguy 18:47, 20 May 2006 (PDT)
Ok now I've solved me linkie prob (forgot bout bumping!) - colour change time. --Sagacious (talk) 18:58, 20 May 2006 (PDT)
Remember to include usage instructions! --Ponytailguy 19:02, 20 May 2006 (PDT)
Added Usages, had a play with colours. I like the blue one personally, and was thinking maybe both the photo tags should have matching or very similar colour schemes? Keep those opinions and suggestions rolling in ;-) --Sagacious

Tweaking

Btw, ye tweaked The Keealhaulers, saying that the O training guidelines heading shouldn't be since it was part of the public statement... Yet, it's a completely seperate article. Check before ye do that in future please:P ~Onomatopoeia (talk) 19:21, 20 May 2006 (PDT)

"Perfect article"

Drop it in your userspace for now. I'll be unprotecting in a few hours. --Ponytailguy 12:21, 23 May 2006 (PDT)

Templates

Ahoy! The templates you're creating are very hard to read. Can you try to use more newlines in the raw code? Thanks! --Barrister 12:22, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

I assume you're referring to the template code itself? I'm about to merge familiars to be subs of Portraits (this will be fun). Time for code cleanup first. --Sagacious (talk) 12:25, 25 May 2006 (PDT)
I'd suggest waiting a few weeks. MediaWiki 1.6.5 is now available and we've asked the Ringers about updating. With that release default template values will be available and we can use one simple template on every pirate page.--Fiddler 12:30, 25 May 2006 (PDT)
But, I've worked my head around this template now - and it works when I've made all the sub-pages onto my original template (PortraitsF will get deleted). Kinda sad if my work gets wasted. --Sagacious (talk) 12:34, 25 May 2006 (PDT)
Using the one template allows for seamless, effortless integration of future infoboxes; the "pick and choose" approach you've taken does not.--Fiddler 12:41, 25 May 2006 (PDT)
Three templates are becoming 2, with variables. The idea of a universal template doesn't seem to make much sense - so it will be interesting to see how it works. --Sagacious (talk) 12:43, 25 May 2006 (PDT)
Zava's page now works on the new Portraits template mod. Opinions - now that I've gotten round to overcoming the issue of 'the template is not good because it doesn't work with familiar boxes'. --Sagacious (talk) 12:59, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

Yes, you've solved my formatting concerns. That being said, I share Fiddler's concerns about creating new templates if a MediaWiki upgrade is in the works. --Barrister 13:14, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

I enjoy writing templates. Is the code different for making a 'one for all' template - if so where can I find it so I can have a chance to write the or a template when we get the upgrade. --Sagacious (talk) 13:18, 25 May 2006 (PDT)
The template is already written (Template:Infobox pirate). When the upgrade to MediaWiki 1.6.5 happens, the extra | inside the paramater definitions will define the default value for that parameter, until then, the template just sits, waiting.--Fiddler 13:26, 25 May 2006 (PDT)
So we'll still have alot of compulsory variables? Urg that sounds no fun. --Sagacious (talk) 13:41, 25 May 2006 (PDT)
No; look at the examples under "Usage" on the talk page. The beauty of default values is that properly set-up templates have no compulsory values.--Fiddler 13:44, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

Ahoy. In case you didn't notice, the downtime from last night saw the wiki upgrading to MediaWIki 1.6.7. We now have the power of default values for templates available. Take a look at the instructions for the Infobox pirate template and at some pages I've already converted: Barrister, Sseth, and Adee. This should solve all formatting problems, reduce the number of templates needed for pirate pages, and will also allow for simple integration of new infoboxes in the future.--Fiddler 10:33, 30 June 2006 (PDT)

Re: Image:History.png

Is it Image:History2.png you want copied over? --Nicksterv (t/c) 08:23, 26 May 2006 (PDT)

Talk pages

Why are you restoring the contents of User talk:Lpmike? If he wants to delete it, that's his preroragitive. I know that PTG restored a single comment previously, but that was a warning to the user about his behavior. --Barrister 11:57, 29 May 2006 (PDT)

Just a little reminder

Especially during this frantic improve the pirate pages before they're deleted period of time, please consider waiting at least 15 minutes before you do spelling/formatting fixes on those pages because it can be super confusing to not-so-wikified people to get that message about how everything they typed up as an edit didn't take because someone else swooped in to fix things the instant they made the first change. Thanks! --Guppymomma 14:58, 31 May 2006 (PDT)

Hmm?

You'll have to excuse me for doing my job. And you'd be surprised how many people breeze by the big orange box and keep editing anyway. (Especially if you're editing by going back > save, back > save, then it doesn't even appear properly.) --Ponytailguy 08:03, 1 June 2006 (PDT)

Maybe, maybe not. --Ponytailguy 08:06, 1 June 2006 (PDT)

Mildina

Sorry to claim a section for my own but I feel like im gonna need your help a lot XD Can you tell me how to get that languages box lower? I tried to it but it doesnt seem to work... Help? --Mildina 10:52, 1 June 2006 (PDT)

  • Can you help me with something else too? :)

Im Angelxx on Viridian too and I accomplished more as Angelxx than I accomplished as Mildina. Can I merge those 2 names into 1 pirate page? Like I got the globe as Angelxx on Viridian and im working on the globe as Mildina on Hunter and Sage. And I would like to get it right the first time XD Plus, you may edit my pirate page any time you'd like... Thank you for your help :) --Mildina 11:16, 1 June 2006 (PDT)

  • Angelxx IS on another account, that account is like Mildina__ and if I type it in here, its getting redirected to Mildina... --Mildina 11:47, 1 June 2006 (PDT)

A bigger reminder

Sagacious, please give people at least fifteen minutes before jumping in to edit and fix up a page that someone has just worked on. It's unnerving for people to find someone has been messing with their page when they are still working on it, and people are still getting used to how the wiki works. Thank you. --Eurydice 10:49, 3 June 2006 (PDT)

It makes people feel sniped. The edits I'm talking about happened after Guppymomma's request for a 15 minute wait. If we see someone else doing this consistently and it's brought to my attention by a player as a reason they find the wiki intimidating, I'm sure I'll warn that editor as well. Thanks! --Eurydice 11:24, 3 June 2006 (PDT)

Re:

Do you know if any of the Oceanmasters are online?

Re:

I am curious, do you know if it is possible to restore a pirate name that was deleted? I am told it is possible by Poseidon, but then when I petition, i had an arguement with an oceanmaster about it who refused to do so and banned me for 1 day for bothering him.

Oops!

Thanks for telling me what needs to be changed. =) I realise that i need to put the word 'building' in the name Thank YE!

Am i doing the right thing?

Am i doing the right thing when i upload Building-Sage-Conceived_in_Libation.PNG and then link? Please tell me so i dont have to redo everything =). Thank YE!

oh...

i am sooo sorry. I didn't realise it was the image quality that was being messed up. if there is any way i can help deleting my other pictures that were... bad, please tell me. Thank YE...

Candidates for Speedy Deletion

Please remember to add a reason other than {{d}} to the edit summary when you put an image file up for speedy deletion, just to be clear to YPPedia users of all skill levels and experience why you think that it should be deleted. --Featherfin 11:06, 19 June 2006 (PDT)

Midnight Building Pages

Ahoy there! I see you're shrinking a couple of the larger pictures in the Eta island building pages. You're actually one step ahead of me on my list, this was the next thing I was going to do. I had however started and intended to make them all consitantly 250 px size, not thumb and without the slightly cluttering boarder. Unless there are any specific reason not to do that my OCD for consitancy would like to see them all have the same parameters. Any comments or suggestions on that? --Muffynz 20:08, 19 June 2006 (PDT)

Question and a Request

Okay, thanks. still one question, could I explain some strategies, that might look confusing for a new player trying to learn some tricks of spade, you wrote down there more detailed.

I put up a little example of the format I am planning to use for a complete unique strategy that as far as I searched is nowhere to be found on bilging. the link => [[1]] --Timdc

Blockade history review

I should have time to review the Midnight blockade history later tonight. With any luck, you can move it over tomorrow to replace the current page. --Barrister 18:14, 28 June 2006 (PDT)

I've found a problem with event blockades. Your template isn't setting up an anchor for Winter II, for example. This needs to be fixed. Sorry. --Barrister 02:40, 29 June 2006 (PDT)
With the new templates with default parameters, do you want to modify the blockade templates to take an optional name like "Artemis' Revenge"? I think that might be useful. (Sorry, I'm not trying to drag this out, but I'd like it to be really good before switching.) --Barrister 12:55, 30 June 2006 (PDT)
When you fixed the Artemis' Revenge problem, you did it by adding a new parameter to your template, and then adding a blank instance of that parameter every time you used the template. With default parameter values, you could remove all the blank instances. If you'd like, I can try to show you what I mean. Is it okay if I edit your blockade history page and associated templates? --Barrister 13:30, 30 June 2006 (PDT)
When you're ready, I think it's safe to move this over to Midnight blockade history. Good work! (FYI, I'll be offline for a while now.) --Barrister 17:53, 30 June 2006 (PDT)

Cobalt's good to go. --Barrister 22:07, 30 June 2006 (PDT)

Viridian's good to go. --Barrister 13:05, 1 July 2006 (PDT)
Sage's good to go. --Barrister 17:33, 1 July 2006 (PDT)

OCL

Don't do that. If you have an issue with something that is protected, you need to take it up with the OM in charge of that thing. Send Apollo a PM or something. DO NOT CIRCUMVENT A FILE PROTECTION. EVER. --Guppymomma 19:46, 1 July 2006 (PDT)

If a file is protected, it is off limits. I don't know where you think that a protected file means you should switch it out for something else just because you feel like it and want to get around that protection. It doesn't matter what your intentions are, if it's been protected you need to respect that. --Guppymomma 20:05, 1 July 2006 (PDT)

"I didn't get a response, so I just fixed it temporarily..." is not an excuse. It's protected. You should not modify it directly or otherwise. That is non-negotiable. I'm sorry you're frustrated by lack of activity or responsiveness to your comments, but lack of response doesn't ever constitute permission to do something you aren't allowed to do.
I myself am often frustrated with lack of response to comments I leave on talk pages, but the answer is never to escelate to making the modifications yourself. If you need help or have issues with OCL pages, please feel free to contact myself, Yaten or Thunderbird (and possibly other administrators, but I just know that the three of us have been involved in organization) and we can see about hooking you up. But this "I just decided to fix it myself" attitude has to go :-/ --Ponytailguy 20:08, 1 July 2006 (PDT)

To add to what Guppymomma is saying: Given your prior incident in circumventing protection on an official file in the YPPedia you should be dealing with situations like this with a lighter touch. What would have been preferable would be to create your fixed template, PM Artemis or Apollo with the changes you made, and then let them either make the changes to the protected template themselves or have a player admin make the changes. I realize that you're only trying to help, but you're doing it with such hubris that it can only lead to bad things.--Fiddler 20:13, 1 July 2006 (PDT)
