Puzzles

Avast! What would Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates be without the puzzles? Puzzles are used to accomplish almost every player action in the game from Bilging, Sailing, and Carpentry, to Foraging, Swordfighting, and Drinking. Many of these puzzles are based off of templates from older flash games found online in past years while others are completely original ideas from the staff of Grey Havens or players themselves.

Puzzles may either be single player in the case of ship board duty puzzles and crafting puzzles, or multi-player in the case of carousing puzzles and parlor games. Performance in a puzzle grants each player a level of ranking (based on lifetime overall score) and experience (based on lifetime overall time or number of plays).

Performance in popular puzzles is often used to designate "elite" or "talented" pirates however these designations will vary from ocean to ocean and between different social circles.

Standing and Experience

Over the course of their career, a pirate will play many of the puzzles within the game environment. They will be assigned two labels that represent their overall puzzling prowess for each puzzle: standing and experience.

Standing directly represents the player's ability to play the puzzle as compared to all other active pirates on their ocean. After each puzzle session, at each league point on the ocean, or at the breaks during blockades and flotillas, the player will be assigned a rank for the session or time period they just completed. These ranks will be Booched, Poor, Fine, Good, Excellent, and Incredible from lowest to highest. A pirate's standing is drawn from the average ranks they receive on duty and score reports and is based on the relative score of all active pirates on that ocean who have played that puzzle. Trophies are available in each puzzle when the player has scored their first incredible in that puzzle.

Experience is a measurement of the time spent playing a puzzle based either off of number of complete sessions or actual time played varying from puzzle to puzzle. This experience is cumulative across the lifespan of that pirate and is not account wide. They experience levels are Novice, Neophyte, Apprentice, Narrow, Broad, Solid, Weighty, Expert, Paragon, Illustrious, and Sublime. Trophies are available for each puzzle when the player has reached the Broad, Expert, and Sublime levels respectively.
