Talk:Babylon
From YPPedia
<sigh>, I actually created a stub specifically for the looseweed definition contest, and you guys had to go and flesh it out, ruining the effect. Oh well.
Please keep the reference to the other 4 oceans in there at least. Thanks. TMBTC
- The fleshing out of this article was primarily spurred by a topic on the Fandango forum. (And note the fact that Looseweed was the one who did it). --Thunderbird 23:12, 28 December 2005 (PST)
- With all due respect, TMBC, (a) how could we have known? And, (b) the main pages are not a toy. The editors work hard to keep YPPedia accurate, up-to-date, and usable. "Joke pages" just cause extra work for us. That's why I asked (and Looseweed agreed) to move the original contest from Looseweed to User:Looseweed. --Barrister 23:13, 28 December 2005 (PST)
- (Ahem..) I'm fairly new to the Wiki concept. I'm also not exactly sure who's arguing with who, above. I added the "History" section to the Babylon stub because "Babylon" is quite likely the most misapplied and poorly understood popular phrase in YPP parlay - for which I am likely responsible because there's never really been a public 'definition' of it. I also didn't trust anyone else to define it properly. :) If any part of this entry is deemed inappropriate by the Keepers Of The Wiki, then please inform me and I would be happy to modify it accordingly. Same goes for the Wiki Event.
- I do have a question, though. What's the difference between a "user" page and a non-user page? For instance, should this page:
- be moved to here:
- ?
- If not, I would like to hear the rationalle, so I can understand the Wiki project better.

- To the left of your YPPedia page, there is a link labeled Policies & guidelines which outline the current policy on individual pirate pages, defining what's meant by notable pirates. The only namespace that is automatically searched by the default search is the main namespace. You can search the User namespace by checking the appropriate box at the bottom of the page after clicking on Search. And your edit of the Babylon entry here is perfectly fine as it explains the term in relation to the game/forum in an encyclopedic way. The reason why it was requested that your contest be moved to your user page is because the main namespace is meant to have encyclopedic articles with real info, not random insult or funny things. User pages are allowed to be more "freeform," but if there's nasty language be warned that it will probably edited out because YPPedia's not a place for vulgarity due to the game audience. --Guppymomma 06:49, 29 December 2005 (PST)
- I see. So a factual account of the Looseweed character history, as it relates to the history of politics on Midnight, would be acceptable content for a page located at http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/Looseweed, whereas external "non encyclopedaic" content is only appropriate at http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/User:Looseweed .. correct?
- Yeppers. We'd actually be very interested in a factual account for the Looseweed article. Trying to think of other pirate articles that are good examples. Uhm Thanos and Pennsuedo are two examples. --Guppymomma 07:43, 29 December 2005 (PST)
- Take a look at the differences between Attesmythe and User:atteSmythe or Callistan and User:Callistan for an idea of how to break apart the information.--Fiddler 07:51, 29 December 2005 (PST)
A Small, Nitpicky Question
Is the term "myth" in this article referring to "a story with supernatural events" or "something that is false"? I'm probably being very nitpicky and/or paranoid about this, but I'd rather not have Christianity be dismissed as myth in this article if it's the latter.--Zyborg22 15:03, 11 February 2006 (PST)
- It's probably neither. There's a lot more to Christianity (and other religions) than just a simple statement of belief. I think, in this usage, the word is being used in its more academic sense: "a popular belief or tradition that has grown up around something or someone". --Barrister 15:16, 11 February 2006 (PST)
- According to Wikipedia, Religion is a belief system and Myth is the body of stories that surround that belief system. (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_and_mythology ) A quote: "One can speak of a Jewish mythology, a Christian mythology, or an Islamic mythology, in which one describes the mythic elements within these faiths without speaking to the veracity of the faith's tenets or claims about its history." In truth, the terns Babylon and Zion within the YPP world are more directly related to elements within Rastafarian Myth, which is only loosely based on Christian Myth. (hence the phrase, "rooted in," used in the wiki entry) Babylon for Rastafarians represents all forms of establishment, including government, financial institutions such as banks, etceteras. Zion for Rastafarians is indeed a real place, but it does not refer to the Mt. Zion from Christian faith. Rather, it's their term for Ethiopia, the "promised land." --Looseweed 4:36PM, 6/1/2006 (EST)
Flag stub?
In case I missread this article, isn't this about the terminology, and not a flag called Babylon?--Kinocha 16:21, 5 June 2006 (PDT)
- That is correct, it's an article referring to termanology, not to a flag name that (may or may not) be predicated on that termanology. If the current architecture oft he Wiki is set so that a flag stub page and a general page for the word "Babylon" cannot coexist, then a second section for the flag needs to be added or something. I'll let those more Wikisavvy handle that. --Looseweed 4:36PM, 6/12/2006 (EST)
