A shack is a type of house. A pirate's first shack is free and located on their home island. Subsequent ones cost 1250 PoE each, but if at any stage a pirate has no shacks he or she may claim one for free again. Similarly, the first shack a pirate returns will not grant any money back, but subsequent shacks returned will grant that pirate 625 PoE per shack.
New pirates have a mission to "Get Loot for yer home!" which presents the pirate with a free bedroll and slatted crate and the message: Here's some furniture to get you started. Check the text in the 'Ahoy' tab to learn how to arrange furniture. Also, new pirates recieve a rat with the message: A little rat has scurried into the house. You can pick it up and take it with ye or equip it to have it follow ye. Pets which are following ye will not show up in some scenes but will reappear when ye return to your house and other scenes which allow pets.
