Fame

Fame is a measurement of a crew or flag's activity. When a pirate plays a puzzle, the pirate's crew and flag both receive credit towards their fame. If the pirate is jobbing, the pirate's own crew/flag and not the crew/flag they are jobbed into receives the credit for the activity. Flag pillages, Team Competitions, and Bake offs all add to your crew and flag Fame.

For a crew to join a flag, the crew must be at least Rumored. To create a new flag, the crew must be at least Established. There are also minimum requirements for a flag's fame that determines whether or not it may blockade certain islands:

Flotillas

Now it's time to defend your island! In addition to enemy flags attacking, the Brigand Kings might take an interest in your island.

A Flotilla is where a Brigand King gathers his or her fleet at a league point on an ocean. Affected league points are visible on the world chart by an icon, a different one for each King. The league point node itself changes to have an icon representing which King owns the flotilla and is either marked in red for sinking flotillas or grey for non-sinking flotillas.

Flotillas act as a force, and may be attacked by passing vessels in an attempt to drive the King away to a different part of the ocean. Since Kings will declare blockades against islands nearby to their current base location, attacking the flotilla is a way to help prevent the nearest island from being attacked by them.

Blockades

Blockade action at Wrasse III

A blockade is the most common means by which a flag takes control of an island. A blockade is a large multi-ship sea battle in which factions vie for control of flagged buoys. Unlike regular sea battles, blockades do not involve grappling or swordfighting/rumbling.

A blockade is structured in a number of rounds, in a best-of-five format. There is a fifteen minute break between each round, with an extra hour between rounds 3 and 4, for a total of one hour, fifteen minutes, should the blockade last that long. For more information on how to win a round, see the section on scoring.

Colonization

Once you have taken control of an island, it's time to colonize! A well-designed island is planned and mapped far in advance, usually by the governor or a member of the flag's royalty. This can be done using the handy Yohoho Tools application or by using a screenshot of the island map. It is important for future governors to know that valuable commodities (herbs and minerals) cannot be built over.

A governor also names all the island's buildings. Governors are encouraged to think of clever names, including puns, word substitutions, alliterations, or otherwise funny building names. Most islands have a naming theme, such as Park Island—whose buildings are puns on amusement park attractions.

The Colonization page offers a walk through for setting up buildings.
