References
Stinking badges is a part of several well known quotes from print, film, and television.
It was first used in the book The Treasure of the Sierra Madre by B. Traven which was published in 1927. In it a Mexican bandit angrily responds to a question about proving he is a federale with a badge: "I don’t have to show you any stinking badges"...
When the book was adapted to the film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre in 1948 the line is altered to remove profanity in the book and is sneered by the bandit leader Gold Hat as: "I don’t have to show you any stinkin' badges!"
Stinking Badges appears again on the television show The Monkees in the episode It's A Nice Place To Visit, which aired on September 11, 1967. In the episode Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith dress up like Mexican bandits to rescue Davy Jones from a "real" Mexican bandit. In their exchange before leaving to rescue Davey, Mickey replies to a question about needing to take a club card or some badges with them: "Badges? We don’t need no stinking badges!"
The line was then immortalized in 1974 Mel Brooks film Blazing Saddles. In it the corrupt State Attorney General Hedley Lamarr, played by Harvey Korman, has a sheriff’s badge given to one of his Mexican bandit henchmen, played by Rick Garcia.
- Korman says to Garcia: “Be ready to attack Rock Ridge at noon tomorrow. Here’s your badge.”
- Garcia throws the badge to the ground and replies: “Badges? We don’t need no stinking badges!”
