Mortesecca

Mortesecca (born November 2, 1666) is an Tuscan necromancer, member of the crew Fratelli della Costa. He sails the Sage Ocean. The term "Morte secca" in Tuscan vernacular stands for the symbol of the skull over crossed bones (Jolly Roger).

Biography

Mortesecca was born on All Souls' Day (formal Catholic name: Commemoratio omnium Fidelium Defunctorum) in Castiglion che Dio sol sa, in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany under Ferdinando II de’ Medici. Fond of natural sciences, he became member of the “Accademia dei Fisiocritici” founded in Siena in 1671 by Pirro Maria Gabrielli. Because of his morbid interest for human corpses and black magic, in 1681 he was banned from the Academy.

Mortesecca moved then to Florence, where he gradually gained a reputation of a holy man, with healing and prophetical powers. The same year, the young son of the Grand Duke Cosimo III, Gian Gastone, received a bruise after he fell off a horse and suffered from internal bleeding for days. His older sister Anna Maria Luisa asked for the help of the charismatic healer. Although the little boy was quickly starting to give signs of recovery, when Cosimo, renowned for his sanctimonious moral, found out that Mortesecca was the healer of his son, he issued an order of arrest against him.

It is said that fleeing to Livorno, where he embarked for Sage Ocean, Mortesecca cast a curse on Medici family that slowly led to the fall of Florentine house.

Sworn enemy of absolute monarchy after Gian Gastone’s affair, once in Gull Archipelago, Mortesecca joined the crew Fratelli della Costa in its attempt to free the Italian states from foreign dominance.

Pishkirlin

Pishkirlin (born May 13, 1678) is an Tuscan privateer, officer and scribe of the crew Fratelli della Costa. He sails the Sage Ocean.

Early life

Pishkirlin was born in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany under Cosimo III de' Medici. He spent his childhood in Broglio, fief of Baron Ricasoli, where his father was running a distillery. He studied rhetorics at the University of Siena, then diplomacy at the Episcopal College in Portogruaro. Once he accomplished his studies, the Bishop of Concordia sent him as court official to Brussels, in the Duchy of Brabant. His stay was brief because of the beginning of the War of the Spanish Succession in 1701.

Pishkirlin returned to Italy in the tumult of the war, and offered his services to the Prince Eugene of Savoy, commander of Austrian army. His purpose was to struggle for the liberation of his homeland from the Spanish dominance, but he soon realized Habsburg house would have overtaken the rule of Italian territories. Persuaded that he could have found the key of the balance of power at the eastern borders of Austrian Empire, Pishkirlin moved to Jassy, in the Pricipality of Moldova. Here he met the Princess Pirilina, last heir of Tudor of England and engaged with her.

Being accused of high treason, in July 1706 was sentenced to death in absentia by a court in Chernivtsi, and fled to Odessa. The exile sailed back first to Mediterranean Sea eventually finding his way to the Sage Ocean.

The Sage years

In September 1706 he settled on Caravanserai Island, where he enlisted in that island's Navy. In the first weeks of his stay on Caravanserai Island he had also been jobbing for several crews before joining The Black Crows. He soon gained the confidence of his mates and he was first promoted to pirate, then officer. In the meanwhile he became a citizen of Admiral Island, gaining the rank of commander in that island's navy.

A very influential day in Pishkirlin's pirate life came in October 1706, during a visit to Wensleydale, in the Gull Archipelago. In a seaport inn, he met Catti, an immigrant from Italy and member of Fratelli della Costa, a crew aiming to gather all the Italian pirates of Sage in order to sail back to Italy and fight for its independence. Catti introduced him to her captain, Bummaku. One month after, Pishkirlin resigned his position as officer of The Black Crows to permanently join Fratelli della Costa. As the crew's scribe he wrote the code of conduct of his new crew.
