Talk:Real-life couples

Reasoning for this page

Apparently the big weapon upstairs wanted this page. ;) --Guppymomma 17:35, 28 June 2006 (PDT)

Yup. He's fascinated and thinks it's amazing and cool. Hehe. --Eurydice 17:37, 28 June 2006 (PDT)

Gay Marriage?

There's no non-political way to put this, I suppose, but what exactly qualifies as marriage? Do "civil unions" or any such similar device qualify, or do we "define marriage as a union between a man and a woman," as the leaders like to put it here in the States? (Probably not too likely to come up, but you never know.) --Emufarmers 21:14, 28 June 2006 (PDT)

Legal marriage or a legal civil union in your country of residence should suffice. This is not a court of law here. We're just looking for examples of relationship success stories that go beyond dating. This is just a fun little page about nice things that have happened due to the game, do not proactively try bring some controversey that isn't there because it's a waste of my time. --Guppymomma 06:36, 29 June 2006 (PDT)
Non gender-specific language for this article would then seem to be in order. --Diamondblade 13:45, 25 May 2007 (PDT)

Unmarried but Serious Relationship?

A lot of YPP's most notable couples, as far as I know, aren't legally married or "civilly unionised". Rummykins/Ishtar, Polly/Peanutswench, Leif/Misery (at least, I THINK those two cooky kids are involved, or the pictures I've seen are horribly wrong), Bendeall/Stuyvesant... you get the picture. It'd suck if they're excluded from this survey just because they lack a piece of paper saying "married". (this would also get us around the sticky Gay Marriage question) --Ponytailguy 08:22, 29 June 2006 (PDT)

See, here's the problem. Among those you listed, one of those couples has broken up. We're interested in people who've become formally committed. Commitment ceremonies count for purposes of "marriage" in this case--so that gets us around the "not able to legally marry in most states" issue, and also the "don't like the institution of legal marriage" scenario. I understand that this whole page can be sticky; it's not like married couples don't divorce, etc. However, Cleaver is specifically interested in people who've gotten married or formally committed in some way. It's not meant to turn into a barnaclestorm. --Eurydice 09:35, 29 June 2006 (PDT)
Couples who have cohabited for an extended period of time also come in under the category of common law marriage. --Guppymomma 09:41, 29 June 2006 (PDT)
My state does not have common law marriages, although Maidenvoyage and I live together. I'm with Eurydice on this one, I'm afraid that bad blood may circulate and soon a break-up involves splitting up time on YPPedia...you get it on weekends, and I get it on weekdays. Won't someone please think of the wiki!  ;) No one wants to be the one that has to change the wiki and mark a break-up for all to see. -- Quiglin 09:50, 29 June 2006 (PDT)

Hi, I think it's unfair to call the page 'Real life couples' yet insist that the people are married before they can be included. My sister and her partner have been together for over a year now and are completely devoted to each other. They met on puzzle pirates before meeting in real life. Maybe you should call this page the Real life MARRIED couples page, and make another one for just couples. Gren.

No. Eurydice outlined the issues for listing couples that are not yet formally committed. However, there is a "pirates in love and matrimony" thread somewhere in Shore Leave that unmarried couples are more than welcome to make mention of themselves in. There has only been one exception allowed in this article, and that was when immigration issues delayed the marriage. --Thunderbird 02:49, 27 March 2008 (PDT)
Link for that would be: Pirates in love & in real matrimony --Alfwyn 07:03, 27 March 2008 (PDT)

Expand List / Also, info on what ocean these couples play in would be nice.

Interesting article. I'd love to add us, but we didn't meet in-game. My wife and I play in Viridian (we're from California), and I know that our monarch and his "queen" (Falcus & Damayi of the flag Latin Revolution) who just got married in-game recently are also a real world husband & wife couple in Mexico. --Nordenx 15:16, 18 August 2006 (PDT)

Totally slow to add this comment 1.5 years later, but we leave the mentioning of particular oceans up to the players posting along with how much detail they feel like sharing. You should start a thread on rl couples that play together and add it to the links section at the bottom of this article. I'm sure it'd be fun to see how many others are out there. --Guppymomma 09:02, 27 March 2008 (PDT)
