Talk:POKEMON JOKE HOUR!!!/archive

From YPPedia

This archive represents the discussions pertaining to the deletion of the article POKEMON JOKE HOUR!!!. It is a matter of public record. Please do not alter it.

Important Note

Please note that this page is being considered for deletion because its encyclopedic value is being questioned. Unlike policy changes, this is not determined solely by a majority vote. It is not necessary for people to keep posting that they support or oppose deletion.

At this point, in my opinion as a long-time contributor (and not wearing my Administrator hat), those opposing deletion have yet to put forth a compelling argument that the content as currently written is encyclopedic. (Please see my note in support of deletion for specific concerns.) It's not enough to say that it's harmless or fun.

Finally, this is not Parley. Please keep comments civil and polite. Thank you. --Barrister 17:29, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

For this article to be encyclopedic, it has to be about the joke, not part of the joke. This could be achieved by keeping the introduction, the history section, and the paragraph about the tradition living on beyond Hohumdiddly.
Also, let me be even clearer about being civil and polite. The YPPedia is part of the game, and players can be suspended or banned (both from the YPPedia and the game in general) based on their behavior here. --Barrister 06:17, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

What exactly has happened here to even warrant banning or suspension being brought up? -Mazi

Really Important Question

Mazi here. We have their permission to post chat logs. Since Cobaltians agree that this has actual historical significance, perhaps we could use the almighty administrators' assistances in making the page appropriate? Or would that just be too ironical? We aren't really looking to push the amp to 11, but it's a very memorable experience for players on Cobalt. We want to do what is right for the yppedia community. --dustinkyle

The primary objection to keeping the page is that it's not encyclopedic in any way, shape or form (and copying scholarly articles from elsewhere and sticking "POKEMON JOKE HOUR!!!" in place of the original noun doesn't make it encyclopedic). There should be a description of the event, some history, some context as to why it's so remembered, and maybe a short bit of chat quoted. Every attempt at editing since the original proposal for deletion has only made the situation worse, not better.
I only log into Cobalt every few weeks and from what I've read here I find Pokemon Joke Hour neither funny nor relevant. For the article to stay it needs to demonstrate both the relevance and the humor to a complete outsider, not just to those in on the joke.--Fiddler 04:16, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
"copying scholarly articles from elsewhere" Oh yes, totally scholarly.--Marcoromero 04:35, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

I'm sorry - which part is scholarly? And everything you just posted is simply your opinion. I could go onto any page on yppedia and randomly decide it does not need to be there and post ridiculously serious things about how it's not written correctly, etc etc and start a huge insane conversation about something that really does not matter at the end of the day, but I'm not. Since this page has apparently no point whatsoever, it's mere existence should not matter, because no one would be visiting it. Correct? Therefore, our discussing it's existence and this entire huge booty conversation makes it worthy of remembering just out of pure insanity that any one of you have cared enough to come back here, for almost three days now, and post these hilarious arguments for deletion. But anyways. That's just MY opinion. It's kind of like when a child wants a toy really, really badly. The child throws a fit and makes ridiculous comments about why he needs the toy, none of which are actually relevant. The parent chastises the child and points out all the reasons why the child does not need the toy and spends all this time justifying their reasoning when in the end they are just going to slap the kid anyways. So just get it over with and delete it. Sleep better at night knowing POKEMON JOKE HOUR!!!! did not survive on YPPEDIA. Because yes, everyone, it will really make THAT big of a difference. Mazi out. --dustinkyle

YPPedia is an encyclopedia.
I'm sorry - which part is scholarly? This part ("According to leading doctors in the field...") was clearly cribbed from either advertising copy or an article about a specific drug and "Pokemon Joke Hour" just inserted in. I'm also pretty sure that the graphs and equations were downloaded from elsewhere on the internet and re-uploaded here, which is a clear violation of copyright policy.
So just get it over with and delete it. If you're more interested in being right than keeping the article then it can be deleted right now. However, if you'd actually like to keep an article about Pokemon Joke Hour on the YPPedia it must maintain an encyclopedic tone. --Fiddler 05:50, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
Dear Fiddler, you honestly have NO idea what you are talking about. First of all, please google Princeton Plainsboro Hospital and you will find that it is a fictional place in which the popular TV series, House M.D. takes place. Way too try too look informed, mate. Secondly, the graphs were indeed downloaded from elsewhere. They were downloaded from a post in a forum about an online game called Heroes of Newerth (once again, so scholarly). Said graphs and equations were made by a player (just like myself or the next guy) of the aforementioned game in an attempt to explain an in-game mechanism, thus they have NO copyright (I can link you to them if you insist) and we found them appropiate to explain POKEMON JOKE HOUR!!!. Get your facts straight and stop taking shots in the dark, mate. Looking forward to your reply.--Marcoromero 06:02, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

The main argument of those in favour of removing this article is that it is still not encyclopedic in its content. I appreciate that the writers have tried to remedy this, but unfortunately these efforts have resulted in the article becoming less encyclopedic rather than more so :S. Maybe it would help you to look at other Yppedia articles and see what kinds of information are included in them =), and the style in which they are written. I also appreciate that you have tried to remedy the copyright concerns, (although, saying that the material was taken from non-scholarly sources doesn't make it right to copy it). I agree that the page "does not live up to the policies established to keep the YPPedia an accurate and relevant resource". Saying that this is simply our opinion, we don't know what we are talking about, or that we should lighten up or take a chill pill because it is just a game aren't valid counter-arguments to this. I also agree that saying it is harmless and fun isn't a good argument for keeping the article here. If you really believe that it should be shared, perhaps consider moving it into the User namespace, or onto the forums. Lastly, please remember that personal attacks on other Yppedia users have no place here. Please discuss this nicely =D. --Adrielle ♥ =) 07:48, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

I recommend simplifying the page, and merging it into the Guapo Papi crew page as there it can be explained as a relevant event in the individual crew's history, then deleting this article. All the information still exists, just in a different place that makes more sense. -- Muffynz(t/c) 16:45, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Misc

... "Mazi" is my immediate first thought. You have permission to post their words, yes? --Belthazar451 13:29, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Support

  • Support deletion - This article is not encyclopedic. YPPedia is not the place for random jokes and chatlog snippets. As long as the phenomen doesn't involve an audience larger than crew/flag chat it really shouldn't have it's own page. --Alfwyn 14:07, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Support deletion for the reasons stated in the proposal. --Thunderbird 00:37, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Support deletion - this article is not encyclopedic. There is a single line regarding what it is and then chat logs. While amusing, the Yppedia is not a forum where this belongs. -- Cedarwings (talk) 02:44, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Support deletion - Just a random opinion here: I'm a frequent user of the YPPedia, and while I do find the logs amusing, I do not necessarily think that they're relevant for a wiki, more possibly appropriate for the forum, etc. --Fixated 00:56, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Support deletion - It isn't encyclopedic, and isn't even really an article. Also, I don't think some of the language used in it is very appropriate for Yppedia (even if it is filtered, we all know what "scuppering barnacle mother scupperers" means). --Adrielle ♥ =) 01:11, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Support deletion -- This article, while somewhat amusing, does not fit the criteria of "encyclopedic content" that has been set forth so far in all other articles. Even though it may have support from Cobalt players, support does not always mean that it should stay in current form. --Gloraelin 03:32, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Support deletion -- Not encyclopedic. Even if it were encyclopedic, the format is not. It would need to be a brief description of the topic followed by a more detailed explanation. Chat logs and testimonials are inappropriate. The self-referential nature of the "Struggle" section is also not encyclopedic since it is about the page itself, not the topic being described. Finally, I question the appropriateness of the title of the page's use of uppercase and punctuation. --Barrister 04:56, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Support deletion - Are you @#&%!ing kidding me? This isn't encyclopedic, nor funny, nor even interesting to the people who weren't part of it. This should be moved into the author's userspace. --Fiddler 07:10, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
Nice April's Fool. :) --Kamuflaro 17:02, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
^ I agree. Move it to the userspace --Adrielle ♥ =) 20:45, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Support deletion - I agree with the majority of the above made comments on this article's lack of relevance or actual encyclopedic content. I also feel the included chat logs violate the TOS both in their word content and in the use of player names and should be removed regardless of the outcome of the article deletion. Until this article can be reformatted to show real value as a reference to players, it does not live up to the policies established to keep the YPPedia an accurate and relevant resource and should be removed. -- Muffynz(t/c) 02:51, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Oppose

  • Oppose deletion - Dexavis is actually not a part of the crew/flag, so this reaches beyond just our little crew/flag. Many people have been part of this and is not as limited as the article is suggesting. Pokemon joke hour is something that has happened in many different locations, both on land and on sea. While I understand not everybody will get this, it does have a place as a part of pirate history on the Cobalt Ocean. What I do suggest is that Professor expand the introduction a bit more so people who are on the outside looking in have a little better feel. --Hohumdiddly 18:09, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose deletion - This is Professor. I will dig deeper into old chatlogs as I am sure I have solid evidence to prove that POKEMON JOKE HOUR!!! is a phenomemon of great importance that transcends way beyond a crew/flag. --marcoromero 18:34, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose deletion - This is Orch / Cruelty. I am not part of the crew/flag either but the hilarity of POKEMON JOKE HOUR!!! should be shared with all and thus I am opposed to the deletion of this page as I personally and occasionally refer to and copy/paste the material to online flaggies/hearties for pure amusement. Also, can I just say, that this has not BECOME something of encyclopedic value, because of the big 'drama' over the possibility of deletion, obviously, it is meaningful enough to a variety of pirates for them to fight for this page to stay. Thanks. --orchidiana
  • Oppose deletion - This is Mazi. This has become a joke on Cobalt that reaches far beyond our small crew/flag. There have even been several events based on the joke. More history should be added about the phenomenon which is POKEMON JOKE HOUR, though. --dustinkyle
  • Oppose deletion - This is Rocafella. I am a cobalt player who loves this and this has been a life changing thing for me. I am also not part of the crew/flag/gang/mob/burrow either. I believe this should be shared with all.
  • Oppose deletion- This is Treasureme. I believe that the world of YPP is full of people that just like to have fun. Making YPPedia a fun place for players to feel a so called "at home" feeling is not only refreshing but this is FUNNY! I understand that it does not refer to guidelines, events, etc. it does support the way most player like to play the game. You people that oppose the deletion make my world go round <3. It makes me happy that there are still people that enjoy a good all in fun joke. You people that support the deletion kill me I MEAN SERIOUSLY LIGHTEN UP!
  • Oppose deletion- This is Imported. Why shouldn't this stay on forums? I't helps to remember a joke started by a now retired player. It's another way of helping the ocean remember him and the fun he's given to many people. Just something thats good to be shared with many others.
  • Oppose deletion - This is Cem. The one and only POKEMON JOKE HOUR!!! should never be deleted. It has already provided entertainment to dozens of players, and can only continue doing so if it is still allowed on yppedia. I believe most people's first response would be laughter as opposed to annoyance, and for this reason it should stay. --dreilly
  • Oppose deletion - This is Jezus. A game? ...and a website to a game?? ...that amuses?!? Count me in! Reading the page, I enjoyed it. I like that it exemplifies pirate life and history that can forever be etched in cyberspace... Awaiting judgment from an alien race years later when it is discovered. I think that this small corner of the interweb may save us all someday, when the universe sees us with a sense of humor. --bobbyd6363 et al.
  • Oppose deletion - This is Fonshizzle. I remember this from way back when. It's got historical value, because whenever I see this page referenced, I remember the good times. And yeah, as Cem said previously, laughter would be more common than annoyance.
  • Oppose deletion - Its not doing any real harm and it means something to the people that have taken the time to create it, as well as being (if only slightly) game related. Also I think using the filtered words as cause to remove said article is a bit unreasonable. If people are going to be in trouble for using filtered words here then ther'd need to be some consistency and people would start being in trouble for using filtered words in game... which would be ridiculous. Good Game. --Madgick3 08:10, 31 March 2010 (GMT)
  • Oppose deletion - Keep it if it doesn't involve you don't take other peoples fun away. Besides people who log on once every month shoudln't get a say in these things anyway. --Crip
  • Oppose deletion - This is Gooblenka. I side with Mazi and hate POKEMON JOKE HOUR!!! and Pokemon overall, but I cannot support the deletion of this article, as it encapsulates the very escence of the camaraderie and light-hearted humour expressed by Cobaltians. --Gooblenka
  • Oppose deletion - I see that it does inspire good hopes amongst the people involved, while not ecyclopedic I still found the chat logs somewhat humourous. I'm not in favor of deleting the page, and would again suggest that it gets moved to a User Page. -- Forumrizzo 18:28, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose deletion - Barrister your attitude on this page in the "Yppedia" is yet just another reason this game is really starting to suck. Pokemon joke hour has a history and Cobalt. I have a hard time listening to anyone throwing the long time player crap in there because I know you haven't played for longer then I have. Adrielle keep your pretty colored bull crap out of this as it is useless you are just kissing butt, not giving any real help. You people are a joke you need to remember this is a game and try and have some fun.--Crip
  • Oppose deletion - This is Freak here. People who are opposed are either not in on the joke/fun or they are moderators or something going through the ToS with a fine tooth comb. Leave the fun where it is, take a chill pill, or maybe even contribute to the fun and find yourself laughing because remember *gasp!!* this is a GAME!! They are meant to be fun!! - Freak
  • Oppose deletion - I get the feeling, this is an April's Fool, but in case it is not, I'd oppose deletion. The worst case scenario should be removing the non-encyclopedaic parts and putting the remains on the flag/crew page. The problematic parts of this page are especially Relevance and Probability. The article's ending is quite funny, although it's silly fun, that would have no value on the forums, but it had quite an impact on the relation between members of that crew. --Kamuflaro 17:14, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Article updated

Professor here. I have updated the article and I believe that now it has some valuable encyclopedic content for everyone (even non-Cobaltians) to read and learn some Cobalt history. Thank you. Fair winds, yohoho!

Update #2

Article updated thanks to the contribution of a fellow POKEMON JOKE HOUR!!! enthusiast.
