Pirate information table
Should this be allowed? It is making the page seem untidy and would be better just as text on the page I feel. --Angelbeaver (talk) 08:49, 25 September 2006 (PDT)
- Though I haven't has much time to work on the wiki, lately:
- I'd prefer it below the standard infobox, instead of above it, and preferably the same width.
- I and others (Drake, I think) are considering adding rank information to the standard infobox_pirate, so that information may move there. I'd like to tie this to the changes to the pirate page that are currently on ice, since that will give us official icons for flag positions and (hopefully) fleet officer.
- Other than that, I'm pretty ambivalent. The rest of the information in the box is usually included in the first sentence of the article. --AtteSmythe 10:59, 25 September 2006 (PDT)
- My feeling is that I would like to see this information added to the standared pirate infobox. I feel that adding a pirate at-a-glance with information about the pirate's Ocean, Flag, Crew, Rank/Position, Title and possibly home island would make information pages more standard and match the look and feel of the crew, flag, island and building pages. I do agree with the sizing issue. Here is some of my thoughts on why I included the information in my pirates At-a-Glance box.
- Ocean - Make it look like the other wiki infoboxes
- Home Island - Readily available on in-game pirate page and typically doesn't change often for established pirates.
- Crew - Readily available on in-game pirate page and typically doesn't change often for established pirates.
- Flag - Readily available on in-game pirate page and typically doesn't change often for established pirates.
- Rank/Position - Readily available on in-game pirate page and typically doesn't change often for established pirates.
- Title - Readily available on in-game pirate page.
- Manages/Owns - I have since removed from my page because of the size issue but it and owns is readily available on a pirates page.
- Like I said my biggest reason for adding it was to achieve a look and feel of the other infopages. Also I was not able to achieve the box below the official box. Everytime I tried it ended up beside the official box which is no good for sure.--Kgarrett1969 11:21, 25 September 2006 (PDT)
- I'll agree with most of that - seems that now that the infobox_pirate is more than primarily a gallery link, we need to put some more generic, standard information there. I have a mockup that uses the infobox_pirate elements at User:AtteSmythe/Sandbox. My RL job is killing me lately, but I'd like to see some ideas on how to make a more fully-featured pirate infobox, and what we'd have to do WRT its layout, style, etc. Should I set up a more extensive sandbox that doesn't rely on any real templates at all? We could put it under the real sandbox instead of my user page, if that'd make folks more comfortable. --AtteSmythe 11:55, 25 September 2006 (PDT)
- I don't mind using your sandbox area if you don't mind some of us playing in it.;) It would keep it out of the way of other people playing around. Setting up a strawman to beat up and alter I think is a good idea and keeping it separate from other stuff would be especially helpful. If you put a strawman template of the pirate info box someplace I would happily trundle off to beat it up and alter it with some of my ideas for us to discuss and play around with.--Kgarrett1969 12:15, 25 September 2006 (PDT)

- Unfortunately, most of that information will be wildly different for each ocean the pirate plays on. Also, since the change in pirate article policy last June, most of the articles added are not about established pirates and the information does change quickly. More recent articles have looked more like myspace pages than encyclopeia articles.
- Guppy did give me an idea about adding a horizontal top-bar component to the infobox. In there we can list some of this information iconically, as in a travel guide. In this vision I see the top bar for information that can change quickly, like anything found on the in-game pirate information page, and the side bar should be for more "milestone" type information: familiars, island designers, etc...
We can also use that top-bar to link to the yoweb pages, once the current Ice changes make it to the production oceans. I'll make a mockup page later tonight.--Fiddler 13:12, 25 September 2006 (PDT)
{{Infobox pirate}} (Usage) discussion
This discussion is probably more appropriate at Infobox_pirate, and probably needs a mention at YPPedia talk:Style guide, agreed? --AtteSmythe 13:27, 25 September 2006 (PDT)
Trinket table
I reworked the trinket table for two reasons: There was a graphics glitch using the other method, and future changes to the My_trinkets templates could break nonstandard usage. Additionally, it was breaking the hscroll, so I reduced the number of columns. Please feel free to reformat the table if the spacing is not to your liking, though I personally prefer it. I apologize in advance for changing the order of the trinkets - if they were in a specific order, I can take the time to restore that. --AtteSmythe 10:20, 31 October 2006 (PST)
- /me sighs. They were in a particular order but I can fix it. What was the problem horizontally? Are you on a 600/800 resolution? On my PC it was fine and would prefer to keep it wider. I was trying to keep it condensed. I don't want it to scroll into a bottomless cavern as I add to to. I liked the way in looked in 7 columns but am willing to back it off a bit. How much of a problem was it causing you? --Kgarrett1969 10:48, 31 October 2006 (PST)
- I rolled it back out - the change is in the history, anyway. I keep my browser window a smidgen wider than 1024 wide, and I was still missing a column and a half (two columns of images and one column of text). 800x600 is a pretty ridiculous requirement for a modern system, IMO, but I thought 1024 was a pretty reasonable test size. Edit: The technical change that I would like to see is one My_trinkets/start-end pair for each column. We and others can debate the style issue of page width separately. --AtteSmythe 10:53, 31 October 2006 (PST)
- That explains it. I'll roll in back to 5 columns and format it in a more standard way. There are however a few other pages using the My trinket template the way I was usinging it. I was copying it from others. --Kgarrett1969 10:57, 31 October 2006 (PST)
- I guess I'll have to go through and audit them again, then, and perhaps come up with a real multi-column tutorial. Thanks for the heads up. --AtteSmythe 11:03, 31 October 2006 (PST)
