Talk:Event E2/Proposal avernus666

From YPPedia

Please clarify if the starting sloop race is solo.

Straight from the entry: "The participants must supply their own sloop at Lima and it can be stocked and manned anyway they chose." --Avernus

OM Support

From Jasandrea's OP in the forum thread:

"OM involvement is limited to OM only activities (broadcasts, brigands turned off, etc). "

From Jasandrea later in the thread:

"People who run events on the oceans typically provide their own prizes, whether from crew or flag funds or donations. The Poetry Death Match, for example, cost my flag two sloops, and me personally somewhere in the neighborhood of 75K PoE. Then the OMs provided some individual stuff, as well, like the ship renames and the familiars."

From your entry:

"All ships and supplies for blockades to be supplied by the OM."

I don't think your expectation of OM-supplied ships and stock is in line with the usual support given by OMs. --Squashbuckle 16:36, 5 February 2006 (PST)

Rebuttal: You need to step back and read the contest again. The ships and supplies will be in Ringer flags the deeds will never be held by individuals. The ships are there at the remote island to make the event possible. EXPERINECE has shown that trying to do this at a nearby or civilized island makes it rather difficult to manage. Again, the OMs in the past have shown the willingness to do this as long as the ships are not retained by individual players after the event. So Crew 1 and Crew 2 magic deeds are held by event coord Alts and any that remain (not sunk) are returned to the OM. If you make the event bring your own cutter to this remote island you instantly remove 90% or the ocean from the ability to play which mean the intent to expose less expereinced players to the blockade board fails. Prizes? Again experinece dictates...OMs will use an event to give away a OM generated familar if the event is worthy. The brigs and trinkets will be supplied by me --Avernus

  • Rrrrm, actually, I'd really side with Squash on this. It's going to be a very busy couple of weeks for events. The 'no OMs doing activities that could be done by non-OMs' rule is to keep them from going insane supporting these events. Ships can be supplied by players, ergo, supplying ships is a non-OM-only activity that shouldn't be done by OMs. The fact that OMs can and have done this sort of thing in the past really has no bearing on this rule. It's not that entries will be DQed over something like this, but it is very definitely a factor in judging. --Jacquilynne / Jasandrea 10:32, 6 February 2006 (PST)

Rebuttal: Generating X # of cutters and a MG full of supplies for a contest will take an OM, less than 10 minutes. Really making a mountain out of a mole hill on this one. The Nevermore event showed that doing this in a populated area can be troublesome... doing it at a far out island is the solution but announcing the island too far in advance defeats the purpose of doing it. Short notice of the island (required for control purposes) means that ships and supplies need to be prepositioned to pull this off. Again, the intent is to give as many pirates as possible a chance to participate... the suggested restriction quickly turns this into yet another elitist event enjoyed only by those few who have risen to the top. --Avernus

Prizes

You write: "First Place: Familiar named Justice (Black/White Parrot), Second, Third and Fourth: Custom Named Brig and a Special Trinket"

Your context makes it seem like these prizes are for the navvers only, but to win this event, navvers will need skilled crews aboard their cutters. It is a big commitment for the jobbers to puzzle for a sloop race and six blockade rounds. For them to come away with nothing seems unfair and I would imagine would discourage people from jobbing. Perhaps you should revamp your prizes to take into consideration the amount of effort the jobbers will be contributing, an effort equal to that of the navvers, if not more.--Squashbuckle 16:41, 5 February 2006 (PST)

Rebuttal: The staffing and rewarding of people puzzling on the ships is UP TO THE NAVER, much as it is in a real blockade. This contest is not just about who can NAV the best but who can combine that skill with the social puzzling it takes to fill your ship with the best puzzlers. Avernus

Template & caps

Please switch the username in the template to be lowercase so various linky bits in the template will work. This is just due to the wiki being a bit strict about considering uppercase & lowercase as completely different letters. --Guppymomma 19:35, 5 February 2006 (PST)

Blockade strategy

A large part of blockade strategy has to do with how ships work together to control flags. Who will be the one coordinating each side and getting the ships to fight as a team? It seems like the skill of the coordinator will have a very large impact on who advances to the next round. Also, what happens when a team of ships randomly thrown together refuse to cooperate? --Bootlicker

Yup yer right, thats part of the social puzzle that must be worked to win this contest. Unlike most of the contests run on YPP, I seek to make a contest that crosses puzzle skill with social skill. If a randomly chosen team doesn't work well together then NONE of that team will advance. Its a tricky game with quick allinaces formed and disolved... hmmm much like what leads up to real blockades. --Avernus

Page Editing

Editing the page after the event deadline is really not kosher. I'm able to check the history and see that it was just a really minor edit, but please, don't do it again. --Jacquilynne / Jasandrea 10:27, 6 February 2006 (PST)

Just edited my name so it was pointing to the right thing. Sorry

Question about Influence

I have little experience in the blockade setting, however I do understand you have a minimum staffing of vessels needed in order for that vessel to have "influence", and you have no ability with which to score points if you do not have proper staffing to maintain influence. While you can have swabbies on your ship, they do not count for influence. This event is scheduled on Cobalt ocean, which also means non-subscribers do not have influence. How might this affect this event, especially since you have selected cutters (minimum of 4 players for influence) instead of sloops (minimum of 3 players for influence). What happens if one randomly-selected side has no issues with keeping influence for their ships, and the other side is unable to staff? Are you perhaps instituting any requirements beforehand, to make sure that all players are at least somewhat experienced? At a minimum, I would recommend posting about influence and requirements in the rules for the event, just to help combat new players who know nothing about it from jumping in and saying, "Hey, the game broke! They have circle, I don't have a circle, I can't get points!". Perhaps posting or explaining that if this problem affects your random team, it may behoove you to try to provide staffing for your temporary teammates ships, or something along those lines? Finally, how do you intend to "randomly" select the teams? Thanks, and good luck!--Muroni 10:17, 9 February 2006 (PST)

Answer: Sounds like a player problem. Seriously, if someone in this compeition can't get four mates onto a cutter for influence then err ummm tough luck mate. Again as mentioned above this is a combination of puzzle skill and social skill. Someone on YOUR team is short mates? hmmm perhaps the team should help them find some or they might all be eliminated. On the reminding people about influence and numbers, when you run a SF tourney do you remind people how to set up bingos? This is a contest, there will be those that show up prepared and those that don't. --Avernus
