History

The three captainships

During its history the crew has undergone three captainships:

  • Swesvempa, 26 March 2008 - 28 July 2008
  • Thewandererr, 2 September 2008 - 2 November 2008
  • Piratus, 6 November 2008 - onwards

Swesvempa

The crew began with Swesvempa as a captain and his good friend Swedempa as his first mate. They both previously belong to Fratelli della costa, the crew of which the founders of the Knights of Saint George and Ascalon were also members. The very same day the crew was created they joined Ascalon and they press ganged every landlubber who was unlucky enough to be in sight. It was not long until they found Piratus and corrupted him to a dreadful pirate. Later on he would be so dreadful and famed that he became the new captain of the crew. Together with some trustful mates, Frame and Gallo to mention some, they controlled the crew and made it prosper. A rename was made on the 31 of May, the crew would from that day on be called the Glimmer of Light, a name that would fit in better with the overall atmosphere of the flag.

Thewandererr

Eventually both the Swe's (Swesvempa and Swedempa) quitted playing and the responsibility for captaining the crew passed to Thewandererr upon suggestion of the senior officer, Frame and the seal of approval of His Majesty the King of Ascalon.

He held his rank until he decided to leave the crew and start don't plank with us together with one of the Glimmer of Light's senior officers, Yersunshine. This is when the current captain of the crew got his position. Piratus and Frame were the only senior officers left in the undermanned crew. Although Piratus was certain that Frame would be the better captain, she was not interested in taking the helm.

Piratus

Piratus was given the privileges of captaining the Glimmer of Light in November 2008 and he's the captain to date. During the third captainship a lot of new pirates have been "recruited", some became new senior officers, while some others quit playing. He was the first navigator of the crew who explored the Cursed Isles and also the first captain who had to deal with a theft, leading to a change of crew policies to Autocratic. Under Piratus, the crew portrait, featuring Captinthe, Piratus, Frame, Grodanknorr and Benke in the official crew colors, was commissioned on the 23 of October 2009. The portrait is now obsolete due to crew leavings.

Recognition as a chivalric order

On the 2nd of August 2009, one week after the celebrations for the second anniversary of flag, Pishkirlin recognized Glimmer of Light as an official chivalric order of Ascalon, assigning to the crew the formal name of Most Allegiant Order of the Glimmer of Light and granting to the knights belonging to such a fraternity the right to receive the accolade and its privileges from the hand of the King.

Creation of the crew forums and the decision to leave Ascalon

A lot of Officers of the crew questioned why the crew should stay under Ascalon. While a good and friendly flag, many felt that Ascalon was going nowhere and that it was time for the crew to leave and find a flag more involved in politics and action. Some disagreed and thought that the unique atmosphere on Ascalon and the missions and events the royalties managed was something they did not want to loose. A crew forum was created for the purpose to discuss and solve this problem in privacy from the flag forums, but only a handful of members and post where made before the crew left Ascalon while Captain Piratus was offline, much to his annoyance. Shortly thereafter a proposition to change the crew policies back to autocratic was made.

Before the leaving, a meeting with the higher members of Ascalon was held where the disgruntled officers told their views. The arguments of anti-Ascalon people participating in the meeting was mainly that Ascalon was boring and weak, many thought it was unfair that their captain didn't have royal status even thought he ruled the larger crew in the flag and some simply thought they had outgrown Ascalon. They wanted a bigger flag with more power and involvement in politics.

The pro-Ascalon side's arguments were the rich atmosphere and the huge commitment Pishkirlin made to make the flag fun and interesting. They made their best effort to discuss and ask how many of these problems could be solved, but apparently the others had already made their mind. More details on the philosophy, missions and events of Ascalon can be found here.

Many people agreed that The Glimmer of Light needed some change and the crew officially left Ascalon on the 16th of February 2010. But a lot of people also felt homesick, including the captain. There are still a lot of people who would rather be with Ascalon, and rumor has it that some have created alts and joined Ascalon through the flag's main crew, the Knights of Saint George.

Good Grief

The same day the crew left Ascalon they joined Good Grief. So far, little contact has been made with the flag. The king, Crazee has not shown up to speak with the high officers of the crew so far, and word from his flagmates is that he is "semi-inactive". Piratus did manage to speak to Tortie, a royal of the flag, but their meeting was interrupted because the crew urgently needed Piratus to be the MAA of a Sea monster hunt. While under Good Grief, the captain and the crews former king, Pishkirlin, heard more and more complaints from people who wanted to stay in Ascalon. Piratus asked around and made a list of people who opposed joining Good Grief and it turned out almost twice as many wanted to stay, the reason of the leaving in the first place was because the captains inactivity had led to a few more people reaching the rank of SO, and Piratus had mistakenly thought that their views was the views of the crew in general. Every day it became more and more apparant that a mistake had been done and on the 20th of February the crew reunited with Ascalon and Piratus gave a farewell speech to the members of Good Grief.

The Fearless Rebels

Allthough the majority of the crewmates wanted to stay with Ascalon, thoose who opposed Ascalon in the first place quickly decided the leave the crew and start a new one The Fearless Rebels, Captained by Ljl. This was no surprise at all. What did surprise and shock the remaining members of the Glimmer of Light was how many people who were originally for Ascalon decided to join the Rebels. Suddenly a lot of those who where originally against the idea of changing flag parted ways with their original crew and assembled around the rebellious crew. Although not originally pro-Ascalon, the loss of Benke and Frame especially tore a hole in the crew. But with the supreme leadership and skill of the captain and his SO's Captinthe, Grodanknorr and Swedempa, one of the original founders who recently travelled back to Sage ocean to clear this incident, the crew is expected to be on it's feet in no time.

Good ol' days

Trivia

For a long time when the crew was named "The Vikings" it, ironically, did not have any longships.
