Announcing the winners of this year's Egg Design contest! The arrrtistry and creativity displayed in your submissions were nothing short of spectacular, making the selection process a true challenge. Despite the temptation to expand our traditional "dozen" winners due to the overwhelming number of incredible entries, we've stuck to tradition, as difficult as it was.

Each of these designs stood out for their unique creativity, intricate detail, and the story they told. To all our participants, thank you for making this contest eggceptionally memorable. Keep an eye out for these stunning designs in-game!


To all winners, you will receive two copies of your EGGSTRAORDINARY design as soon as they are in game. The first copy goes to the ocean of your entry, the second to the pirate/ocean of your choice on the same account. In addition to that, you will receive the coveted Gilded Egg trophy! If you already have it and want to display on a different pirate, you can do that as long as the pirate is on the same account.


Send a petition entitled “EGG Clotho” (pardon the pun) before March 31st with those choices. After that date, I’ll just deliver trophy and eggs to the pirate on your entry. Congratulations again my wonderfully arrrtistic pirates!


Next up is the People’s Choice! It’s your turn to spotlight your favorites from our dazzling entries. Cast your vote to honor the creativity that didn’t make it to the top this round. Every vote counts in celebrating our community's talent. Watch for the voting details coming soon and make your voice heard!


Entry thread

Submit your eggcellent designs by Thursday, February 29th, 2024, at 11:59 PM game time. Don't scramble, start designing! 🪺

Rules

Naming Format:

  • The uploaded image file name must include the following:
    • Your pirate name and ocean
    • The egg's name of your choice
    • Example file name: EGG_2024-Clotho-Cerulean-Design_Name
    • Summary tag: {{eggcontestentry|2024|PirateName|Ocean}}


Image Specifications:

  • Images must be 256 x 256 pixels.
  • Images must be in .png format.


Submission Guidelines:

  • You can submit up to 8 designs, uploaded as a gallery.
  • To resubmit your own entries from previous years that didn't win, simply upload them again with the correct naming format.
  • Upload the flat square that will be rendered into an egg shape.
  • Rendered eggs are optional extras and won't be considered for judging.


Originality and References:

  • The design must be your original work - you have to create the design yourself. No AI entries, please - while they're lovely, it takes away from the fun of this event.
  • Exclude references to copyrighted intellectual properties from your entries.
    • You may use reference materials for your work, but please acknowledge it in your post if you substantially base your work on that reference.
    • You do not need to acknowledge any game art used as reference material.

Design guidelines

Keep it simple. The design has to work on a relatively small object; make sure your design shines through.


Seamless Design:

  • Wrap it up seamlessly! Your design should flow around the egg with no seams.
  • You can test this by laying two copies of your design side by side and checking if it has a seam running down the egg.
  • We recommend previewing the rendered version as well. While we encourage artists to present seamless designs, a seam is acceptable if the egg looks good when rendered.
  • If you cannot make a seamless design, no matter how hard you try, submit the entry anyway if you feel your design is good!


Shape-changing Effect and Detail Adjustment:

  • Consider the shape-changing effect when designing around an egg - rotations may occur.
    • A design that looks sensible in a square template could look strange on the final egg model.
    • Keep in mind that your design may be rotated for the final egg.
  • The scene also burns out the details, so make the whole thing slightly darker than you would think. Slightly!

Rendering will likely be done via Discord, the same as previous years. See your design come to life!

While we get that Discord link for you, start working on your designs!


  • If you're keen to test the basic egg mesh file, there are easy downloads of 30-day free trial versions of some 3D modeling software (e.g., 3D Studio Max or Blender).
  • Quick instructions on how to get the correct viewpoint for the eggs for those of you also playing with 3DS Max: use the camera angle and render at 640x480.
  • The link to the basic egg mesh file does not work. We're working on getting a copy in an easy-to-download place.
