Template:Portrait background

If this template is only to be used on the portrait pages, perhaps a different name would be in order. {{Portraitbackground}} (Usage) is the template used to designate images for Nemos' Portrait Background Contest.--Fiddler 10:33, 16 April 2006 (PDT)

Thanks. I'll move it to something else. --Barrister 10:55, 16 April 2006 (PDT)

Redirects

For some strange reason, the redirects using the hunter template don't seem to be working. I made them into normal links, but I don't think mediawiki likes the templates within the redirects :). Thanks. --Nicksterv (t/c) 05:26, 17 April 2006 (PDT)

Hmm. That sounds familiar. I think we discovered that once, but I forgot about it. Thanks for fixing it up. --Barrister 08:14, 17 April 2006 (PDT)

Island Spawns

Whups, I didnt even know those existed. Got it, thanks for showing me. :) --Zava 10:41, 21 April 2006 (PDT)

Alphabetization on Islands-Designed Lists

You alphabetized the list of islands Synful created; shouldn't that list be in the order the islands were created instead? Or is alphabetization always the best route? --Emufarmers 15:47, 21 April 2006 (PDT)

If we had creation dates, that might make sense. As it stands, we'd only be able to guess which came first, especially when they created multiple islands for the same ocean. So, I fall back to the old standby of alphabetical. --Barrister 15:48, 21 April 2006 (PDT)

Bludgeons and Swords

Just a quick thanks for cleaning up my tables on the bludgeons page and implementing the layout to swords. That's exactly what I was looking for, just couldn't get the coding right. --Rixation 10:17, 25 April 2006 (PDT)

You're quite welcome. I only recently started playing with table formatting. Once I got comfortable with it, I started trying to give things a more structured look. I appreciate you getting it started. --Barrister 11:26, 25 April 2006 (PDT)

Re: User:Latchhook

I think you accidentally marked Latchook's user page with a {{vanity}} tag :) --Nicksterv (t/c) 13:38, 29 April 2006 (PDT)

Look Barrister I tried that. And I got an automated message saying a "COUPLE DAYS" and now, for some odd reason it says I must wait 23 hours, I've already waited my 24 and I don't understand why I have added time.

Query about a change you made on Pirates of the Abyss

You removed a link from the the infobox on the page that I created, Pirates of the Abyss. The edit reason is that you removed a link to a User: page, which is what you did. I'd like to ask what is bad about having a link to a user page in this manner on a page, when the pirate in question doesn't merit a full page on the wiki. If someone goes to the wiki page to find out about the SO's in the crew, surely it's better to have some source of information rather than none?

I'm new to wiki stuff as a whole, not just this wiki, so it's likely that I missed something in the style guide or broke some standard guideline without realising. If this is the case then I apologise. – Covenant7 (talk/contrib) 10:18, 5 May 2006 (PDT)

Sorry to bug you...

But I notice you're active, so I'm gonna bug you anyway :)

Do we have merger templates in place? Specifically, I'm going to suggest we merge Second in command with Commanding officer, since the former can basically be described as "CO Lite" and really doesn't merit a page on it's own, IMO. Just asking because I can't for the life of me find any, but I don't want to port stuff from wikipedia if I'm just overlooking something. --Ponytailguy 18:43, 15 May 2006 (PDT)

If we have them, then we've never used them. --Barrister 18:44, 15 May 2006 (PDT)

Azure Flags

Just out of curiosity, I see the logic that all Azure flags are considered defunct and don't need the infobox coding (defunct) to be necessary. Does this however mean they are perpetually on the outdated flag information list or is there an Azure template that exempts it from that list that I missed finding? I was working my way through the list updating flags as I went and how should an Azure flag in that situation be handled? Thanks! --Muffynz 11:07, 19 May 2006 (PDT)

BK Trinkets

*Poke* What do you think to this? How you imagined? --Sagacious (talk) 12:50, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

I'll just prod you again for more feedback on the brigand trinkets table...nice clearups tho ;-) --Sagacious (talk) 14:01, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

Midnight/dismabiguation move

I'm sorry I didn't think of this earlier.

Every other ocean (except Cobalt and Viridian) has a redirect from the unadorned island name to the name with the ocean name, ex. Eieio Island redirects to Eieio Island (Ice). Why don't we move the disambiguations to Island (disambiguation) and then have Island redirect to Island (Midnight)?

This is just a test right now on a single island. However, I'm not sure I understand what you're proposing. Can you provide a complete example? --Barrister 15:54, 24 May 2006 (PDT)
Take a look at what I did to Midsummer.--Fiddler 16:00, 24 May 2006 (PDT)
Initial reaction: I like it. Let me mull it over for a little while to see if there's any gotchas. --Barrister 16:04, 24 May 2006 (PDT)
One concern about this: If a user makes a link to Midsummer instead of Midsummer (Midnight), we won't spot that from Special:Disambiguations. Not a major concern, but worth mentioning. --Barrister 16:09, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

Templates

Ok I tried to cleanup Template:PortraitsF. Is that what you meant? --Sagacious (talk) 12:39, 25 May 2006 (PDT)

Building themes

It's what I usually do when I have notes that don't flow directly with the heading. Feel free to clip 'em if you'd prefer. --Ponytailguy 16:04, 26 May 2006 (PDT)

Captainseb

With your edit to put back those categories, you're running into what was mentioned at Category_talk:Pirates; if those oceans are mentioned in the article, but don't qualify for notability, should the categories be included? I think you should chime in on that page. :) --Emufarmers 21:52, 28 May 2006 (PDT)

Er, nevermind. --Emufarmers 21:53, 28 May 2006 (PDT)

Talk Pages

I came under fire for blanking my talk page when I first started out. I assumed it was the general concensus that talk pages shouldn't be blanked, and that it looks bad if they are - but in the end it's their choice. I think the full restore was accidental. I only meant to edit from the previous 2 edits - seems I went too far back. --Sagacious (talk) 12:40, 29 May 2006 (PDT)

Building Pictures

Ahoy there. I'm planning on uploading a few pictures of some buildings on Midnight to add to their wiki pages. I've found a couple that are already on but can't seem to find any pattern to their file naming scheme. Is there a preferred file name format for building pictures like there are with pirate portraits? Thanks! --Muffynz 23:21, 29 May 2006 (PDT)

Good question. There's no existing naming scheme, but it's probably time to create one. I suggest "Building-<Ocean>-<Name>.png" Example: "Building-Midnight-Fast_Fourier_Transport.png" --Barrister 00:21, 30 May 2006 (PDT)
Alrighty, consider it done. Thanks! --Muffynz 09:12, 30 May 2006 (PDT)
I'll re-upload the buildings I've done under the new scheme, but I'm positive some of the names on Admiral will be too long. (It clipped the filename of one image I uploaded already) Should I just let it truncate the shop names as needed? --Zava 09:15, 30 May 2006 (PDT)
Abbreviations are probably better than truncations. What's the character limit on file names anyway? --Barrister 10:26, 30 May 2006 (PDT)
I thought it was 27 characters, but looking closer, that appears to be something Photoshop 'helped' me with, since the filename's truncated on my computer as well. Character limit might not be an issue. --Zava 12:53, 30 May 2006 (PDT)
There is one slight problem with that naming scheme: multiple buildings with the same name on the same ocean could be an issue (there are two El Pollo Diablo shoppes on Viridian). --Thunderbird 11:16, 30 May 2006 (PDT)
Yeah, but it's pretty rare, so it's not worth putting the island name in all the filenames. I'd just tack on the island names where necessary for those. --Barrister 11:52, 30 May 2006 (PDT)

Conferrence

I, Ponytailguy, shirker of administrative duties and resident blabbermouth, confer upon you, Barrister, outstanding mediator and standard-implementer, the first-ever YPPedia Barnstar.

Barnstar2.png

Aw, shucks. Little ol' me? --Barrister 19:45, 30 May 2006 (PDT)
I am equally impressed by Barrister's performance, particularly in helping to defuse a tense situation, and therefore award unto ye, the second-ever YPPedia Barnstar!

Barnstar.png Don't let it all these honors go to your head! ;)

(Copied from here, because I'm not good with image editing. I'd been meaning to give that sucker out, but had forgotten all about it. Now let's never speak of this again, lest it become a forum fad.) --Emufarmers 20:50, 30 May 2006 (PDT)

Newstandard

Yeah, I just don't see how an article that says "X is a Shanty Jockey!" or "X has designed islands!" is any more valid of an article than one that says "X is captain of the Y crew!", so I'm marking them all identically. :-/ --Ponytailguy 20:01, 30 May 2006 (PDT)

Things to Do

Poking around the main wiki today, I cam across a "Here's a list of things you can do!" section on the Wiki Community Portal. Might be an interesting feature to implement if there's a place for it on one of the portal pages here. --Feegle 07:45, 1 June 2006 (PDT)

Isn't that what the Some ways to contribute section is on the bottom left of the YPPedia main page? --Sagacious (talk) 07:53, 1 June 2006 (PDT)
Oops, yes, but that's because I misnamed in my original comment. What I was actually talking about was the "Here are some tasks you can do:" section. It includes such things as, "Wikify: The Chickadees, Chrispin Martin, Zak Martin, Jorge Volpi, Kerala model, Premier Rose Diamond, Panalpina, Backlog...," "Cleanup: Latin America, Samapatti, Robert Jordan (character), Konrad Mägi, Scalar field theory (pseudoscience), Role, Backlog...," and "# NPOV: Textbook, Carole Keeton Strayhorn, American Association of Lutheran Churches, Khalistan, Joel D. Wallach, Ñ, Backlog...." Basically, it looks like a random selection of articles that are tagged for improvement in one way or another, and it's more accessible to my mind than the current "Things you can do," list because it's more specific. Compare: "You can clean up some NPOV articles," to "You can clean up Calicojack."

Crew/Flag links

Ahoy! Please do not de-link crews from the "member crews" infobox sections, nor de-link flags from the "allies" section. We want those to be links, even if the page does not exist. --Barrister 15:47, 4 June 2006 (PDT)

Ick, my OCD for cleanliness does me in again. Good to know though, thanks. I'll re-link them on my next update pass. --Muffynz 16:09, 4 June 2006 (PDT)
Done and re-added all the links back. Hope that didn't cause too much trouble. --Muffynz 19:36, 4 June 2006 (PDT)

Image names

Sorry for the errors in the image names. If you had left me a message, I would have corrected them my selves, saving you the extra work. --Kinocha 13:22, 5 June 2006 (PDT)

No worries. Some of them weren't yours, so I fixed them all up at once. But thanks for offering. --Barrister 13:23, 5 June 2006 (PDT)

Midnight Building Images

Ahoy there! I'm currently working my way through Midnight uploading a .PNG image and ensuring an updated infobox and brief history for every shoppe and bazaar on the ocean. (You can see my progress here if you'd like.) I'm just making sure that this sudden influx of so many building images won't tax the wiki servers too much or cause things to start smoking and exploding. Always good to know before I cause something to crash ;). --Muffynz 16:13, 6 June 2006 (PDT)

It's fine. One suggestion, make sure you get enough of a border around the edges of the image. It looks like some of yours are cropped pretty close. Not a big deal, but just a suggestion. --Barrister 16:48, 6 June 2006 (PDT)
Aye, I was trying to get the size smaller so it doesn't cap the 153kb limit and then it occured to me I should just use Adobe to zoom out a tad. (I'm slow with the obvious sometimes.) I'll be re-uploading the closely cropped ones soon with better images. --Muffynz 19:59, 6 June 2006 (PDT)
Ignore the cap. --Guppymomma 20:12, 6 June 2006 (PDT)
Agreed. The 153kb limit isn't all that important. Zooming will affect the image quality, so please don't do that. --Barrister 20:16, 6 June 2006 (PDT)
Alrighty, marked and noted. Thanks for all the help. --Muffynz 20:26, 6 June 2006 (PDT)
I modified the message that comes up to reflect that it's OK to ignore the cap in most cases. Just in case it confuses anyone else. --Thunderbird 20:48, 6 June 2006 (PDT)

Midnight Building Cat Sorting

Ahoy there! I'm continuing on my update of all the building pages in Midnight. I see that all buldings are categorized by their ocean so all these would be Category:Midnight Ocean buildings. I was wondering, because of the nature of buildings coming in types (apothecary, iron monger, estate agent...) would it be more prudent to slightly alter the infobox template, seen here to something a litte more type specific? For example: [[Category:{{{ocean}}} Ocean {{{type}}} buildings]]. Or perhaps add that tag in addition to the one there so that not only could they bring up the ocean list but the individual type lists as well from the same screen. Just some food for thought. --Muffynz 22:45, 12 June 2006 (PDT)

It's getting close to that time where we should sub-categorize. We need new templates for this, though. There are about 10 different spellings for "iron monger" right now, including "Iron monger", "Iron Monger", "Ironmonger" and "ironmonger". I'd like to have a template that enforced a single spelling and did the categorization at the same time. Further, there's the issue of iron monger bazaars. Do they get categorized as iron mongers, bazaars, both, neither? Before we make any major changes, I think we should have a discussion about revising the business header templates. --Barrister 22:49, 12 June 2006 (PDT)

Policy Change

I'm somewhat confused as to why BOTH policy proposals were passed, when one only had a 63% support and 27% opposition. 63% is quite off 75% - and it has been mentioned numerous times that both policys being approved would not work well. What's going on :-/ --Sagacious (talk) 04:40, 13 June 2006 (PDT)

My talk page is not the correct forum for this. --Barrister 09:57, 13 June 2006 (PDT)

Psst

Just in case there's a reason I shouldn't fix it....Talk:Surtsey --Guppymomma 17:17, 14 June 2006 (PDT)

Quuenpharaoh

No offence Barrister, but the pirate's name is Quuenpharoah, not Queenpharaoh. Check Sage if you'd like, even Hunter. Igniknot told me that user pages are with the PIRATE NAME not the account name. So sorry if im a little confused and do what I think is right. Could you clarify it for me? is it Pirate name or account name? cuz im still confused--Mildina 05:34, 18 June 2006 (PDT)

Linking to User: pages

It's fixed now. --Pip(t|c|p) 04:46, 19 June 2006 (PDT)

Is my page back to high quality again?

Hello could you please re-sheck my page to see if you still think it is low quality? Also, i would appreciate it if you also said WHY my page is low quality. It is Littlebuddy. Thanks, 1472000

Blockade History Rework

Just a small poke to let you know I've completed Midnight's history - ready for proof reading etc. --Sagacious (talk) 06:39, 28 June 2006 (PDT)

Re: Broken links

I was just going for uniformity. There are only 3 trinkets (out of 15, currently) on that page with links. Why leave a broken link when the other 12 trinkets on the page are not linked at all? I'd think that you either need to add links to the rest of the trinket names, broken or not, or remove the broken links altogether. --Rixation(t/c) 13:13, 28 June 2006 (PDT)

Sub-Pages

Ahoy there! I'm curious as to what our wiki's policy is on sub-pages to crew pages. I have a couple tutorials and training systems that to my mind would be easier to navigate on the wiki as I could easily link to the puzzle page and other wiki pages when neccessary using the default wiki linking system. I know a sub-page can be created off of any main page and I use a few off of my user page to keep notes on some of my ongoing projects but I wasn't sure if we had a policy saying not to to conserve space or keep the main pages free. No picture uploads planned, just text and links. Thanks for your time! --Muffynz 14:52, 28 June 2006 (PDT)

Need Advice

The Roses Of Sharayn page was locked because of disputes. I wasn't involved in the disputes and made a new history to try and resolve them, and out in on the talk page but nobody has commented on it, what should I do? --Caruut 01:33, 17/09/06 (PDT)
