Rated games affect both puzzle standing and experience. The alternative is unrated games.

When challenging a player to a swordfight, Treasure Drop, Drinking or Rumbling match, it's optional whether the match is rated or not. Spades, Hearts and Poker are always rated. Tournaments default to rated but there is an option in the configuration panel to make them unrated. Crafting puzzles, even while practicing, are rated. Duty puzzles always cause standing and experience to change except on adventures. Swordfighting or rumbling during a melee attack at sea is unrated.
