Introduction
Welcome to Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates (or just Y!PP for short)! You've entered a word of puzzling, piracy, politics, and above all, PoE. This series of articles about starting out will explain in basic terms all about the game.
- If you would like to learn more about a certain concept, you may click on blue links anywhere, and it will take you to a more detailed article about the subject.
- This guide is not designed to be read all in one sitting - it should be used as a reference point. There are many forms of reference points:
- These articles themselves
- The rest of the YPPedia
- The game documentation, which you can also find at Ye > Help > Docs
But enough of that. You probably want to find out what this game is all about, and what to do in it. Read on!
Picking an Ocean
After you've loaded up the Yohoho! client, you need to choose an ocean to play on. Here is a quick run-down:
- If you wish to play with some friends, pick the ocean they are on.
- Otherwise, you should figure out how you'd pay, should you want to:
- If you are unable to pay money, you should choose a doubloon ocean,
- If you can pay:
- If you would rather pay a flat fee for access to everything, choose a subscriber ocean,
- If you would rather pay for certain features than others, choose a doubloon ocean.
- If you still can't decide, just pick one at random. You can always change later (although you would have to start afresh).
Once you've decided on an ocean, you need to create a pirate before you begin playing. Click on one of the three buttons labelled "Create new Pirate" and start creating your character. You can choose your pirate's gender, hair colour, skin tone, and facial hair for the men. Once you've started playing, these features can only be altered through the use of special (and extremely expensive) potions.
You must also choose a single-word name - choose wisely!
- Don't choose a random scribble of letters, like Nghdgwefrv; it's difficult to type out.
- Don't try and take a name like Captain Jack Sparrow - hundreds of pirates have names that are subtle variations on it.
- Do be creative and imaginative - a pleasant, fresh-sounding name will get you noticed in a good way.
If you cannot think of a name, there are many random name generators on the web that can make sequences of random syllables to help you come up with name ideas. Pirate name generators also exist, but they tend to generate multiple-word names which are not supported.
Pirate names also cannot contain any rude words.
Your first steps
Welcome to Puzzle Pirates - you're now a greenie (newbie) on the ocean of your choice! Listen up, here are a few vital rules to keep you on your feet during the early stages of the game.
- Be polite! This is a game of interactions with other players. It's always nice when people are nice to each other =)
- Try and use proper spelling and grammar. If English is not your native language, try your best - but everyone appreciates it if you use capital letters and full stops. Which of these types would you rather be spoken to like?
Hello, and welcome to the game! Hope you have a nice stay!
hi n welcum 2 da gaym i hop u hv a gr8 stay
Following those two rules, especially the top one, will ensure you will be treated politely by other players.
So, you're a greenie wearing nothing but some basic items of clothing. You have no money with which to buy things, and you haven't even had your first taste of rum! We better get you up to scratch!
