The guild has discovered a concrete box about the size of a fist. Guild philosophers tell us that the box encases an ancient treasure once held by an elite circle of Pirate Lords. It's true origins are unknown. This box contains:

  • An engraving of some sort
  • A strange locking mechansim

Submissions are closed. This treasure (navy) was found by Pletoo of the Sage Ocean.

Scroll of Secrets

"It may just take the Gods to see, the final order is 'abc...'"

Solution

I F G C E J F F I G G D

Pletoo's correct Submission.
Now, I had seen the OM / myth connection way back - found seven references almost immediately. I also changed the letters into numbers based on their position in the alphabet (interestingly enough, the first 6 words of the phrase correspond exactly to the first six letters - maybe that was planned as a clue?) The thought never occurred to me to count the letters in their names (especially considering I only had 7 names and 12 letters.)

Now I see:

Our Love = Aphrodite (9=I)
Which whisks = Hermes (6=F)
Across oceans = Oceanus (7=G)
Of memory = Mnemosyne (9=I)
As if hunting = Artemis (7=G)
the lightning storm = Zeus (4=D)
the strength = Bia (3=C)
of our fire = Hephaestus (10=J)
rivaling = Nemesis (7=G)
the sun = Apollo (6=F)
for while it sleeps = Hypnos (6=F)
now it cannot die = Hades (5=e)

The clue said the order was a-b-c (I knew order meant sequence rather than brotherhood)

Aphrodite, Apollo, Artemis, Bia, Hades, Hephaestus, Hermes, Hypnos, Mnemosyne, Nemesis, Oceanus, Zeus

Of course that doesn't quite say how to unlock the box. Those lettters look like buttons to me (of course the double circle looked like a doorbell to me - I planned on telling you the way to open the box was to ring the doorbell and say, "Avon calling!" but then I got caught up in writing a proposal for GCPP called Snook...)

Anyway...

If I list the letters that corresponded to the names, now that they are in alphabetical order, I get: I F G C E J F F I G G D

and if the letters are indeed buttons I would push them in that order (letters that have multiple occurences would just be used from left to right.) and that is how I would open the box.
