Talk:Earning PoE

From YPPedia

New page layout

We still need rumble and gunnery, but before I do more, I'd love to have some discussion. Thanks! Sashamorning 05:54, 8 February 2007 (PST)

Moving

I agree that this page is not really about "Earning PoE", and should be renamed. A page about earning PoE would be pretty brief, and would mostly be a list of methods which would link to other articles in case someone needs more than just a name. Something to make note of if such a page is ever written: the difference between earning and winning. -Tyroney

Earlier Discussion

So what do you think?

Needs a lot of work done on it. My main problem is that the title of the page is "Earning POE" and you then completely divert your attentions to talking about how to set up your own crew, tactics in swordfighting, sailing tips etc etc, when this could be made a lot simpler, clearer and more helpful. In line with some of the comments on the page, I created a scaled-down version that we could replace this with. http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/Sashamorning/Sandbox/EarningPoe
I really like Piplicus' idea of adding the greenie page stuff, but maybe this would be better as a separate page, that the current page is linked from. Sashamorning 22:26, 5 February 2007 (PST)

Eh, since nothing's happened on this page in over a month anyway, and it looks like there were several disagreements about the merges (including by the person who suggested it), I'm going to throw up my updated page in the interim. Sashamorning 05:37, 8 February 2007 (PST)

Merge?

As I was cleaning up this page, I couldn't help but feel it has too much extraneous information for what it's supposedly about. Each section is pretty much covered by a separate page elsewhere in the YPPedia. I think it would be best if each section was merged into those pages instead of having this stand-alone grab-bag. Would that be possible? --Lilly 12:38, 31 December 2006 (PST)

I would disagree that a merge is necessary; in cases like this, the information is being made avaliable in a less academic and more accessible form that appeals to new users. Yes, there's a great deal of duplication, but there's also something to be said for alternative phrasings making information more palatable to end-users. (Remember, the YPPedia is an encyclopedia, but we also have a mandate to service the YPP community however we can within the scope of delivering information.) --Ponytailguy 12:44, 31 December 2006 (PST)
I did not know that. :) In that case, I guess it's pretty good as it is - just needs a little more spell-checking and grammar assitance, which I'll do as soon as I'm able. --Lilly 13:09, 31 December 2006 (PST)
Where are we on merging? I agree that some superfluous information can be removed, but the general gist is a VERY good one, a quick intro to the puzzles that greeters can quickly send greenies to. As a result, I agree that merging is probably not needed, but we can direct users to the main article for greater detail (which was the goal anyway). When can we remove the merge requests? So was that a few hours well spent making some of the information a bit more readable and adding images --Cavaliers06 14:08, 31 December 2006 (PST)

Ew, no, no, no. I think that the revamp has been great. That said, this article should be about earning PoE, and the puzzle sections should be split (in my opinion) into sections of their own. We could even add a navigation toolbar and have a series of articles for new pirates. --Piplicus 19:58, 31 December 2006 (PST)

Revamp, good. Split, good. Merge, opposed. Series of articles for new pirates, as long as you are the one making them Pip! --Arminius 20:12, 31 December 2006 (PST)

Another suggestion what about if we move the page to a suitable page with a suitable title. However the series of articles on a toolbar for new pirates seems a great idea. It would help out the officers that have to teach them the basics of the game. An idea for that would be a simplified page on Teaming in Swordfights and Rumbles --Cavaliers06 05:34, 1 January 2007 (PST)

The fact that there are so many different sections in the article made me feel it should be renamed to 'Starting Out' instead of Earning Poe. And it doesn't really cover other things such as sword fighting in inns etc and it doesn't include the Gunning puzzle. Then again if it is a greenie article why does it have Bnav? --Supreem1 22:03, 3 January 2007 (PST)

Those are acually good ideas. but i would like the page to be renamed as "A quick guide to YPP" or something similar that way we dont have to extremely edit it...

Thanks..

While I think a quick list of the different ways to earn poe is a good idea, this article seems to be deterred from that. Would much rather see it be a list of the ways to make money in game with links to the other wiki pages for more info. Or a starting out page, with a subheading of ways to make poe(do we already have one of those?) Merging all the topics seems pointless to me in and of itself.--Stlnmyhrt 02:05, 8 January 2007 (PST)

Greenie articles

So, if we were to have an article about greenies and starting out, written in an informal, second person tone, what articles would you include?

  • Starting out
  • The puzzles (watered down)
    • Bilging
    • Sailing
    • Carpenting
    • Swordfighting
      • All of the above plastered to links about the main articles, extra resources, and the other puzzles.
  • Crews
  • Flags
  • The Sunshine Widget
  • Earning PoE
  • Subscribing and doubloons
  • Bans? (!)

Anyone else got any ideas? --Piplicus 07:30, 1 January 2007 (PST)

Not bans. I think we need the ToS, though. Also, not Bnav. Greenies shouldn't be anywhere near Bnav until they get the rest down. Should these be separate articles, or one longer one? I'd be happy to start on it if/when we reach a consensus. Sashamorning 04:42, 8 February 2007 (PST)

maybe something about stalls and shops and items and maybe something about the parlor games free days ect --Cavaliers06 07:39, 1 January 2007 (PST)

Header Table

I figured it might be a good idea for the top of the article to be a clickable table where the new pirate can click to go to that puzzle. They could also scroll down for the quick explanation (which IMHO should not include detailed instructions, controls, etc.)
