Creating hosts.txt file considered harmful
I wouldn't encourage anyone to create a hosts.txt file under Windows. (Not to mention there is a typo in the tutorial, a host.txt file would not work, AFAIK.) Locking down the IP address is just asking for later breakage. Applications should be able to use DNS and if they can't, there is some problem that needs to be addressed. --Chupchup 18:02, 5 March 2008 (PST)
- Nowhere does it say hosts.txt it say right click on the hosts file and then select Notepad or wordpad to edit it, so that would work. Yes I agree if it isn't resolving the address correctly then there are other issues, but I doubt that the users that would need this sort of help would have much chance of working out and resolving those. -- Vorky 18:05, 5 March 2008 (PST)
Caution required when opening firewall rules
I changed the section on Windows Firewall - the edit is fairly self-explanatory. I just (re-)learned tonight that Windows Firewall does not do anything to block outgoing connections. As for other firewalls, it would be best to avoid allowing unconstrained access for the Java interpreter. By its nature, any type of program could be running inside the JVM, and malicious code could possibly take advantage of that. The best method to use is to permit TCP ports 80, 4007, and 47624, outgoing; these are all that is needed - in fact the client only chooses from one of the latter two when it attempts to connect. The firewall rule can be further constrained to the network 69.80.211.0/255.255.255.0 (or /24) which covers all servers in the puzzlepirates.com domain. It is just good security practice to only specify the smallest possible set of permissions. (And I'll leave out the rant on how silly it is to key the permissions by a program name!) --Chupchup 00:04, 3 June 2008 (PDT)
