Anyone with officer privileges on a ship can order any pirate—be they swabbies, jobbing pirates or full crew-members—to almost any duty position. A pirate has officer privileges if they are an officer or above and the ship is not locked. (If it is locked, that pirate must own it in order to have officer privileges.)

Swabbies move immediately, and will attempt to move to a vacant station of the type they were ordered to. If this is not possible, they will complain in vessel chat that they could not find a station of that type. Swabbies can not be ordered to perform navigation.

Human players hear a whistle and receive messages in both the chat window and the ahoy tab, telling them that they have been ordered to a station. Bear in mind that human players have free will, and may dispute the order; they may also be slow to respond to it. Human players may be ordered to any duty station.

There are common reasons for a commanding officer to order players to stations:

  • Asking those on one station to move to another—E.G., a ship with high bilge but little damage may benefit from a carpenter moving to bilge.
  • Enabling a guest without officer privileges to navigate, load guns, or chart a route on the table which they have memorized.
  • Alerting (or "waking up") idle pirates and lazers.
  • Breaking through the haze of puzzle vision.

A number of crews hold that refusing to obey an order deserves the plank.
