Comment on the formatting
I haven't read everything here, but it seems that you press enter a lot, making a lor of "paragraphs", which make the text harder to read. This is particulary obvious in the "Background" section, for example. --VPeric
- It turns out that IE formatting and Firefox formatting are NOT the same. I'm really going to have to go over this in the editing when I'm done.
Small thing, but as for the background section, I think it would flow into the rest of your tutorial better if you rewrote it in third person. --Fannon 09:11, 8 March 2006 (PST)
- Actually, I need to rewrite everything in third person. Right now I'm just in the "Write it first, edit it second" mode. --Behindcurtai 22:18, 8 March 2006 (PST)
Images misnamed
Several day 4 images got mislabeled on upload. Ouch. How do I rename an image?
- You can't. Mark the misnamed images with the {{d}} tag and re-upload the images with the correct names. --Sagacious 04:11, 13 March 2006 (PST)
- Thank you, will do after the judging. --Behindcurtai 12:18, 13 March 2006 (PST)
Capital Costs
One thing I note in conspicuous absence is a discussion of capital costs.
I run a couple distilleries on Hunter. The price of Sugar Cane fluctuates a great deal, as you discuss. However, you talk about stocking up as though it had no cost, when in fact it DOES have a cost - the cost is the profit I could otherwise be making with that capital over the time I hold that stock.
I invested about 60k in each of my distilleries, and on average I get about 10k/week out of them - this means a return on investment (ROI) of about 16%/week.
If the sugar cane cycle is roughly monthly, bottoms out at 5 and tops out at 8, and I run it perfectly, I will buy ~3000 sugar cane at 5 on the first, and sell (or use) it for 8 on the thirty-first. So my investment is 3000*5 or 15000, and my profit is 3000 * 3 or 9000 and my ROI is 15%/week. If the cycle takes six weeks instead of four, my ROI drops to 10%/week. I might well have been better off (assuming I'd had the other extra capital) buying another distillery. Real numbers will of course vary by shoppe type, ocean, island, cycle amplitude and cycle frequency, but this sort of calculation is something to keep in mind if you are considering whether to spend 100K on stockpiling for your distill or open an ironmongery.
And this is totally what I get for hanging out with RL capitalists, isn't it?
