Please do not link from the main pages to User pages. Among other things, User pages are not in the default search system. --Barrister 13:45, 8 August 2005 (PDT)

For the uninitiated, might it be explained why the search system is relevant to linking? Is it that if a user name happens to overlap with some other more general term, that the user reference will be picked up additionally?

Since pirate pages are disallowed as vanity and linking from entries to to pirate info on user pages is not acceptable, how are you supposed to easily find pirate information given a reference?

That's part of the reason. The main pages should not link to the discussion pages or user pages. Another problem is that a single user page may represent multiple characters across multiple oceans. Pages about specific characters are allowed if the character has done something noteworthy (Robertdonald, Looseweed, Tedv, etc.).

As for finding pirate information, this is meant to be encyclopedic. It's not really analogous to a phone book. I hope this clarifies the situation. --Barrister 14:03, 8 August 2005 (PDT)

I'm not arguing for a general phone book, only wondering why main-entry pirate links, some of which are already autogenerated in flag royalty lists and so on, are destined to never be filled in with anything useful for the 90% of them who aren't widely famous. Some information on major players in other crews and flags, filled in by them, would be of not insignificant value when considering crew joinings and alliances and so forth. Even (or especially) YPP-irrelevant data such as might allowably show up on their user page is useful for that. -- Dvarin (14:48 8-8-2005)

I think the only one that autolinks a pirate's name is the governor field on the island template, the other templates people have just put a linked name into the monarch field, etc. If there is some solid information about stuff that the pirate has done, whether or not it's a vanity page would be more arguable. As it is, if a pirate entry just contains the pirate's name is in x crew and x flag, then that's not particularly useful. The history that you did for Cold Steel is great, I'd think that a good page on a pirate would contain an interesting history sorta biography like that. Everything is still really in the early stages and we don't really have very many detailed pirate pages. The only one I can think of is Ajani's. --Guppymomma 15:48, 8 August 2005 (PDT)
