I've found the following to be the easiest way to add a portrait to a pirate's page (under Windows, at least):

1. Add the Template:Infobox pirate code to the page, and click preview. There will be a red link where the portrait should be.
2. In a new window (or tab!), open a link from the gallery box. Click on a portrait to make it full-size.
3. Drag the portrait to your desktop to save it on your computer. The file name will be strange, but don't worry about it.
4. Back in your YPPedia window, save the pirate page. Click on the red portrait link. This will take you to the upload page, with the proper file name already filled in.
5. On the resultant page, click the browse button and select the file you saved on your desktop. Set the description to {{portrait image}}, and click Submit.
6. Go back to the pirate page to verified that it worked!
