Bakeoff? What?

A bakeoff is a puzzle competition. The best puzzler (in this case, the best gunner) wins!

Date! Where's the date? (Or location)

This event will take place on Saturday the 18th of November. Location is Gauntlet Island. All times are around noon (So the event starts at roughly noon, jobbing starts at 10:30 AM, etc.) All times are PST.

Prize List

Everyone in the top 10 will get a maroon-grey ribbon trinket, as well as...

  • 1st Place: A green octopus
  • 2nd Place: A bronze fish (rare furniture)
  • 3rd Place: A sleeping piglet
  • 4th place: The Licensed Killifish (war brig)
  • 5th Place: A black clam shell trinket
  • 6th Place: The Nefarious Plotz (sloop)
  • 7th Place: The Secret Codde (sloop)
  • 8th Place: The Underground Sublaire (sloop)
  • 9th Place: A fisticuffs set (assorted carousing furniture, and a fancy chest to keep the filthy lucre in)

This prize list will likely change and grow as donors pop up and the stuff I drugged Apollo with wears off.

Preregistration

Preregistration for this event is full! There is no waiting list being maintained, but you can still try your luck on the day-of!

Preregistration for this event is mandatory, and open to anyone with a standing in gunnery of Renowned or higher on the Sage ocean as of reciept of their preregistration. You may preregister an alt, provided you have at least one Renowned or higher character which we can check.

Preregistration will be open until two days before the event (12:01 AM on the 16th), or when we have 80 preregistrants, whichever comes first.

To preregister, send a PM to Agon with your pirate name, and just so we know you're paying attention, the name of a James Bond (or Austin Powers!) henchman or villain.

Preregistrations will be confirmed twice, again by PM: once after they've been received, and again 24-48 hours before the event. The second PM will include information on your ship and assistant assignment. You may wish to print or save the contents of this second PM to save you time later.

Tarting

There is a strict No Tarting policy in effect for this event. Agon will not be assigned to a boat for any round of competition, and will be more than happy to have a respectful discussion with anyone who feels they have been mistreated, cheated, wronged, or otherwise had their experience compromised. Agon will not tolerate angry rants in /crew chat, Agon will not tolerate /tells that make dread pirates blush, and Agon will not hesitate to expel from competition anyone who insists on causing a scene.

If you have an issue to raise, please do so quitely and privately. This not only makes Agon more willing (and able) to help you, but it shows respect to the event and the organizers, which gives him a reason to listen to you. If you scream and cuss, he'll probably /mute you instead.

The Event Itself

Signin and Boarding

Assistants will be on duty from 10:30 onwards. If you're a preregistrant, you need to check in with your designated assistant and get jobbed into the event crew before 11:30. If it's after 11:00 and your assistant isn't around, you can go through Agon instead.

If you are not a preregistrant, but still want to participate, send a /tell indicating your interest to Agon at any time from 11:15 onwards, and he'll add you to the list. At 11:30, if there are any open spaces, he will job first-come-first-served from this list.

Preparation

As soon as all the boats are loaded and ready to go, the core rules will be recapped one final time over /crew chat. Feel free to ask any last-minute questions you may have over /vessel, and your assistant will do their best to answer them. Once that's done, the ships will depart and engage each other in PVP.

When you're in battle, your assistant will somehow load the 16 guns, then fire them off to get them dirty for the first competitor. (They may ask you to help them with this initial load.) The first round will then begin.

Round 1

Participation

The assistant will call a name. If it's your name, get yourself to a gunning station. Before you enter the puzzle, call out "Ready!" over /vessel chat, then start gunning. Load the 16 guns in any way you like; you can boardshop, you can leave boards half-done, whatever. Just load them as quick as you can. Once all 16 are loaded, leave the puzzle and call "Fire!". The assistant will then fire the guns and call the next entrant.

Please be nice and keep /vessel and /crew chat quiet while people are competing. Assistants are allowed to discipline you for speaking out of turn and distracting people, and they may expel you from competition. Once you're finished competing, you may leave the vessel if you wish, as long as you stay jobbed into the crew so you can hear announcements. Also, feel free to puzzle while you're waiting... just don't gun unless it's your turn ;)

Tally/Scoring

Once all 8 entrants have gone, the assistants will disengage, port the boat, and use their logs to determine how long it took each of you to gun. The three shortest times per boat, plus anyone who finished with a time equal to or less than 3:15, will move onto the second round.

Break/Loser Lounge

There will be a short "go to the bathroom-get a drink-take a smoke-check on the kids-whatever else" break at this point, lasting 5-10 minutes. Starting in the second round, we'll also be offering access to the Loser Lounge to anyone who just wants to hang out and wait for the sinking: the Loser Lounge will have an assistant or two on-hand to keep you updated and run some local-only tournaments, and we'll also have far more carousing tables than you'll ever need. Sit back, relax, chill, and enjoy the bitterness.

If you've moved onto the second round, your assistant will /tell you the boat you're boarding. Be aboard by the end of the break.

Round 2

Participation

Round 2 works almost exactly like Round 1, except that you're loading 24 guns instead of 16. Beyond that... yeah, exactly the same.

Tally/Scoring

Again, once everyone's finished competing, your assistant will disengage, port, and tally. However, this time around, only the top two overall (across all of the boats) will move on. Everyone else is, of course, allowed to join us for the sinking!

Break

There will be another 5-10 minute break so we can sort out the finalists, finish tournaments on the Loser Lounge, and otherwise prep for the final.

Final Round

Setup

The finalists will be split up. One will remain in the crew and board the Disposable Henchman; the other will be jobbed into another crew and board the Floating MacGuffin. Anyone who wants to sink is welcome to join the finalist aboard the Henchman, with two rules: no talking while they're gunning, and no carpentry, at all. Violating either of these means an instant /plank.

Once everyone's in place and ready, we deport and engage one final time.

Participation

The assistants on both ships will load one single gun, while another assistant maneouvers the two boats into a position from which they can both hit, and be hit, by each other. Once they're in this position, the navigators will input the single gunning token on the wrong side of the boat. Once that single gun has fired, the finalists may begin gunning.

The navigators will load every gun token as soon as it's generated, LSMing if necessary. Gunning tokens will be loaded down instead of across... that is to say, if you have three tokens, your navigator would load in three moves of one token each, as opposed to one move of two and one move of one. If more than four tokens are avaliable, the assistant will start doubling them up, again from the top down.

Whoever doesn't sink wins. (If the boat with the sinkers doesn't sink, we'll send out a sloop afterwards to finish them off.)
