The Knowledge is a crew on the Meridian Ocean, formerly of the Viridian Ocean.
History
The Knowledge was founded on the Viridian Ocean on Friday 13th January, 2012 by Zarquontoo in preparation for the work ahead of him and many others after the oceans merge in 2012. It was felt that there will be a lot of pirates with the entire ocean memorised, who now find themselves in a position where they have to memorise one half of the ocean again.
The public statement includes the lines "We are navigators. We know where we are going. We are chart, compass, sextant and atlas; we study the mysteries of routes and leagues, of islands and archipelagos, the opening of ways and the shortening of distance. These are the tools we employ, and we know many things.", some of which is based on lines from Babylon 5
The crew is intended as a home for pirates wanting to work on duty navigation and memming, but otherwise want to be left alone to get on with their own projects, such as, but not limited to, foraging, gem running, moving commodities about quietly, shifting battle fleets around in the middle of the night so nobody notices, etc.
Rank within the crew is dependent on a pirate's progress with memming, those that have completed an entire ocean, or post-merge, one area equivalent to the area of one of the older oceans, will be ranked Senior Officer. Most members known to the captain or senior officers will be ranked Fleet Officer, so that they can use the chart library ship without having to bother higher ranks, and all other crew members will be ranked Officer, because the crew has no use for lower ranks.
One notable rule is an 'Anti-PTB' rule. "We respect each other's right to be left alone to navigate in peace, unless they ask for company. We do not ask permission to board, we wait to be asked. Do not board others' ships unless answering a call for assistance."
The Crew Chart Ship is at Lima Island. It is intended to be a place to store charts to be used by trainee navigators.
The term The Knowledge is a reference to the street and route knowledge required of London Taxi drivers before they can obtain their licence.[1]
