Template talk:Portrait frame-2

From YPPedia

I'm thinking of having these templates automatically label the pirate for that ocean. If people have bothered to create portrait galleries on an ocean, then I think they should be tagged as "<Foo> Ocean pirates." Opinions? --Barrister 22:42, 7 April 2006 (PDT)

Depends. We generally say a pirate should qualify on all oceans to receive the tagging, aye? So what would we do for someone that has a portrait everywhere but only plays on one ocean? Just looking at one potential problem with it. --Fannon 22:52, 7 April 2006 (PDT)
Last I checked, a pirate only needed to qualify on one ocean to have an article, but they could be listed on all the oceans they play on regardless (such as I have Midnight and Viridian category tags on my pirate article). --Thunderbird 22:54, 7 April 2006 (PDT)
Small issue though: At least one userpage is using one of these templates. --Thunderbird 11:02, 9 April 2006 (PDT)
Good catch. I knew there was a reason this would be a problem. Oh, well. Back to the drawing board. --Barrister 11:17, 9 April 2006 (PDT)

Were you looking for a way to template the adding of pirate ocean categories? --Sagacious 11:28, 9 April 2006 (PDT)

Yes, but without creating yet another new template. --Barrister 11:37, 9 April 2006 (PDT)
Some work on sub-templates with my Portraits template template might be able to do it. When I'm in the right frame of mind I might try. --Sagacious 11:47, 9 April 2006 (PDT)

There's only 2 or 3 User pages that use the Portrait frame templates. I have a plan to retrofit those, so I'm going to convert these in the next couple days. --Barrister 13:27, 11 April 2006 (PDT)

Image Name Problems

When people add a portrait to a page, are they using this template? (I'm too technically inept to figure out how exactly to copy it in a usable form without the handy usage thing that's there with the crew and flag infoboxes.) And either way, where are people generally taking the format from? Here, or just off of whatever page with a portrait they can find? I'm just asking because I've seen a lot of portraits uploaded onto pages named "Pirate-[Blargh]," rather than "Pirates-[Blargh]." Wherever it is that people are getting the formatting from, it needs to be corrected there if we're to maintain image name consistency. (Or is it Portraits template? That one definitely uses the right image format, but the style guide presently links to this template, which might be why I'm so confused. Should we be putting that template on all new pirate pages, and working to add it to older ones as well? Because from some of the new pages created today, I am suspecting that people are just finding an existing pirate page and copying the formatting from there; thus, old pages would need to be reformatted before they're copied and spawn new misformatted pages. Which, of course will take a lot of work...Hrmm...--Emufarmers 20:00, 17 May 2006 (PDT)

This template has only a little do with adding a portrait to a pirate article. It's equally possible to add a portrait without a gallery box as it is to add a gallery box without a portrait.
I assume that when users create new pirate articles, they merely follow the example of a pirate page they've already seen and just copy it. The issue of people uploading images named "Pirate-[Blargh]" probably comes from people skimming the template and not actually reading.
Portraits template is Sagacious' attempt to simplify the code present in each pirate article. I don't feel it's an adequate solution at the moment; it forces familar boxes into an akward position and it also neglects to make room for any future pirate infobox additions. What I use is the code available at YPPedia:Sample pirate page, picking whatever sections to the infobox need to be used.--Fiddler 20:37, 17 May 2006 (PDT)
So I should just yank the code from that page whenever I need to add a portrait? That's fine; it's just that now it seems like we've got bits of code, and several templates, all being used for this purpose. I hope that doesn't cause problems later on. :/ (For now, should there still be a link to this template on the style guide? Because as it stands, there's no usage instructions on this, so I can't figure out how to use it anyway.) --Emufarmers 22:16, 17 May 2006 (PDT)
