Template talk:Ifdef

From YPPedia

With so many other popular templates now relying on this one, I think it may be a good idea to protect it. -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 23:50, 27 May 2007 (PDT)

OK fine, protect a template because I make a stupid mistake, and not protect another much more widely-used one when I recommend it. I'm honestly rather sick of the admins these days. -- Thefirstdude (t/c) 20:10, 12 June 2007 (PDT)
This isn't really the right place for this discussion.... However, I think it's worth explaining the the general YPPedia Administrators' philosophy. Put simply: we trust our users. We choose not to preemptively protect everything that might affect a lot of users. However, as soon as someone makes a large enough mistake (as you did) or acts with malice (as others have done), we have to act to protect the community.
There is no need for us to mark more than a handful of templates for protection. Excluding the Official namespace, there are very, very few pages that can't be edited. We like it that way. It encourages people to contribute and to do innovative things. However, your track record with {{Rank box}} (Usage) includes several occasions where you failed to test sufficiently before saving your changes. So, now it's protected.
In contrast, the ifdef template hasn't been edited since its creation on November 2006. There's just no need to run around protecting pages without a specific reason. --Barrister 22:47, 12 June 2007 (PDT)
