Everyone gets a pet rat when they start, and yes pets are widespread. What the article means is that it is the only animal that does not belong to anyone, because it would not be possible for anyone to leave a pet on an uninhabitable island except for an OM. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cheesypie010 (talk • contribs)

The comment you responded to is about three and a half years old, but I think I should clarify, here. The note on the island's article says that this island contained the only animal. Animals and pets are different - the former predates the latter by about three years. It's also written in past tense - it was the only animal. --Belthazar451 04:14, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
