Talk:Event E2/Proposal Hempline

From YPPedia

Will participants need to play every single day of the contest to have a chance to win? A lot of people can't play every day. To account for this, will the winners of the daily subcontests win any prizes, or just points? --Squashbuckle 00:14, 19 January 2006 (PST)

Participants who remain in the event should attempt to participate in every day, but of course real life events take precidence. I would ask people to attempt to put aside an hour a day to participate, though the events will more than likely take less time, or the teams will have the full day to partake in them. If pirates still cannot participate in certain days, they will be considered to be on 'autopilot': either as a swabbie in puzzle chapters or they will become a silent follower in a storyline, doing what is asked of them but nothing more. As for subcontests, there will be prizes given out on chapters when certain storyline events are successfuly done. --Hempline 12:50, 20 January 2006 (PST)

Workshopping

I'm excited to be short-listed! One of the questions that came to mind as I was figuring out this event was how I would choose the amount of panache points given to each section done. Would I just choose arbitrarily, make the more difficult puzzles worth more, have it set so a higher tier of prizes would be planned for people that get so far in the storyline? Does any mentor have any ideas how to best work the point system? I would like to know what kind of prizes I would be able to award for such an event as well, so I know what I'll be working with.

I would also like to discuss the plot with the mentors, as well as what I would like to have happen with the players. I realize I have quite a time-consuming event, and I would like to hear input if certain parts are too complicated or simply not doable. --Hempline 19:15, 10 February 2006 (PST)

Lordkalvan replies: Don't make the scoring system too complicated. Ye will go nuts (and possibly make mistakes). With me logic puzzles, I made a scoring rubric afore i posted each puzzle so I knew exactly how many points each part of the solution was worth, and whether any partial credit would be given. Ye will have to think about how to award bonus points fer the rest. Some kind of prize fer any team that makes it at least so far in the storyline would be great! I'd be happy to read yer plot via PM, and if "Uxmal" means the action will be taking place in Sapphire then I might be able to talk me flag into donating some poe fer prizes (we usually spend 25K of flag funds each month on an event in Sapphire but are skipping March). --Tcarr 06:06, 12 February 2006 (PST)

Hey, stop kicking me, lady!

  • Something you said in your description made me think that for some things teams would have to be in-game at particular times of day. Further up here, though, it sounded like there would be a chapter a day with the whole day to complete it. I think the latter would be better, in terms of equity of participation. Not that I'm biased, being GMT myself!
  • Are you certain that you have three judges who will be able to put in the substantial daily effort that this could take? I know it would also be tough for you to do it, but you're likely to have a more vested interested in keeping it all going! Maybe track down LeJerque and find out what it was like over that two-week period. Although, if you're cutting down to single-figures in the first few, it's probably not so bad as having 40 teams through to the end!
40+ teams with daily chapters? that is extremely intense, even if ye have all the chapters written and tested ahead of time. However, if ye need another judge I would be available the week of March 12-18 (me spring break). --Tcarr 07:19, 17 February 2006 (PST)
Actually, now that I'm thinking upon it, I believe the three judges aren't really needed. Also, I'm thinking of cutting the more eronious puzzles so perhaps it would be seven days worth of an event within two weeks, every other day. This might allow players to have a little bit of respite between it and make it more fun for everyone, rather than having it at a break neck pace. Also, as Crystal stated before, 40 was just a possible number of starting teams, which will more than likely be brought down to the single digits with the scavanger hunt starting event. --Hempline 09:15, 17 February 2006 (PST)
  • I'll help with plot if you need a mentor to discuss it with. If you already have enough to do that, though, I'll opt out - because really this is the kind of event I love to take part in myself, and I probably couldn't do that if I'd gone into plotline with you.
  • A daily event for two weeks is a lot of commitment both for you, and the players, and the judges. It's doable, but you might just kill yourself and several others, doing it. Consider putting low-judging-effort days in, or low-puzzle-efforts days. Either days off, or things where there's a really straightforward answer (and therefore) marking scheme, so that you can keep going.

  • To echo Crystal's comments above, be careful about committing to daily events, they're very wearing. You might want to have a chat with Apollo about that, I'm still amazed he didn't go crazy after running daily events throughout all of December!
  • I'll take a closer look at your e-mail and the plot and events you have planned.
  • You're going to want to stick to either having one set of in-game activities/puzzles happening or none. You can get away with one because you can keep it as a prerequisite for entering. Any more than that and you start losing people who can't make it because of scheduling problems, etc.

--Artemis 20:20, 16 February 2006 (PST)

I understand this problem, and so I've decided that only one more in-game puzzle will be placed in the competition. If I remove the competition-a-day pace, this will allow players to get in touch with me if their scheduals cannot handle such a demi-event. Also, I'm leaning on the fact that with four players per team, there hopefuly will be at least one that can make it; the competition I have in mind asks for only one member of each team. ALSO, I will, within the next few days, send the entire plotline to Tcarr and Artemis, to see if there are any suggestions you could give. As was requested, I won't send this to Crystal, and I hope to see you in the event! Thank you for your time! --Hempline 09:15, 17 February 2006 (PST)

I've had to make a very tough decision. I want to give my sincerest appologies to everyone that has spent time helping me with my brain-child, but I'm going to have to postpone my event. I remain unable to juggle the items in my life and so I'm required to drop one, this event. I would like to thank all the mentors for listening to my prattling and choosing my event out of the many others, and I hope to be able to run this event one day. I haven't accepted the parrot feather trinket in game as I was worried this would happen, so you won't have to worry about that as well. But for now, again, my complete appologies for doing this... Jasandra, Artemis, Tcarr, Crystal: thank you for running such a wonderful event. --Hempline 22:55, 21 February 2006 (PST)

Very sorry to hear that, Hempline, but as always real life has to take priority, and an event is just an event. :) Hopefully we'll see you back and running this event later in the year if you find the time, and I'm sure it'll be superb! My own feeling, by the way, is that the parrot feather was a prize for being shortlisted, not a prize for running the event. Jasandrea can confirm or contradict that, but from my perspective, it was your ideas and thoughts that won you the parrot feather, so you're still eligible for it in my view. --Crystal 00:53, 22 February 2006 (PST)

  • Aye, the parrot feather was a prize for making the shortlist. Try to meet up with me, it's still yours. --Jacquilynne / Jasandrea 11:17, 27 February 2006 (PST)
