Talk:Event E2/Proposal Dorel

From YPPedia

This sounds as though it will be fun to see. How will you ensure that entrants won't edit out their dud moves? It will be all too tempting in the editing process.--Jerze 06:09, 6 February 2006 (PST)

That is why the judges will be will be watching the event live as well, to take note of errors made. The only reason why I want people to record the proceedings is too see how they will match it up with music and how creative they can be with the editing process without changing the actual performance. Dorel 08:29, 6 February 2006 (PST)

This is another cute idea. I'm glad you already realize it isn't familiar worthy for your contest entrants, but as I said for another contestant here, we desperately need these lighter events more often! It's easy to explain, it's easy to monitor, it's easy to compete. Should have a nice turnout!--Muroni 07:04, 8 February 2006 (PST)

It's not just the fact that it isn't a big enough event for a familiar, but also the fact that familiars can't really be given out for team events. Well, they could, but asking for ten familiars to be given out for one event is asking for too much, in my opinion. I am worried about the turnout though, since the prizes aren't all that big, and it's a somewhat unusual event to begin with. --Dorel 08:33, 8 February 2006 (PST)

Awesome idea...got me thinking of a synchro routine...but then my girlfriend pointed out that whirlpools and wins and rocks might affect any preplanned routine. Are you going to ask OMs to remove obstacles or incorporate that into the event? --ScaryMuffin 07:10, 13 February 2006 (PST)

Actually, I like the fact that they have to deal with obstacles. It means that they can't plan out a full routine in advance, they have to adapt to the board. I would suggest, though, that they get a couple minutes just to view the board before they have to start their routine. --[[User::B_licker|Bootlicker]] 09:19, 13 February 2006 (PST)

Thoughts

Timing: I'd suggest no more than 5 minutes at most for this to happen (how many moves is that, anyway?) Most songs are no more than that anyway. I do worry that you're just not going to have the time you need to do this, if everyone takes the 10 minutes total which you suggest and it takes another 2 minutes for the teams to switch places, that gives you 12 minutes per team and a total of 5 teams per hour, assuming no one messes up. If you're running late you'll want to wait because the blockade board will just reset. Would it go completely against your idea to allow more of a free for all without counting mistakes and just judging on artistic merit? (No, I suppose that's a completely different event, still quite an interesting one which someone should do sometime! ;)

Can they adjust the timing on the video to make it match the song more exactly or do you want absolutely no editing to occur? You're already docking for mistakes, so by that point there shouldn't be a real need to grade them on that so much as artistic merit. (Again, two different events, I'm mostly thinking out loud here)

I'd suggest having a list of freeware or shareware programs which can be used for the video capture and editing of each routine.

While I don't normally like having events on ice, it could be very good for your event. I could make one round last three hours, or however long you would need to finish all entrants on the same board with the same obstacles. There would be some problems with allowing doublooners to compete, but you wanted this to happen on midnight, anyway.

Prizes: Don't forget about portraits, those are always great for large team events. Ribbons make a nice addition, inscribe them with the place and event for a nice addition to their display case.

Thoughts not from Artemis

  • Ice would be great to use, and make it available to all oceans, too. I'm sure that sloops could be provided for an event crew, and people recruited and promoted within that event crew with the ships in for the duration of their performance. You'd have to be sure of registration in advance, though. Not having the round breaks would also be a huge benefit in terms of timekeeping.
  • Prizes could still be on ocean of choice, even if event is Ice.
  • You may just have problems with people not getting off the board when they're supposed to, so it may be worth arranging in advance that an OM will at least be monitoring Ice petitions, or be logged in to Ice, so that ships can be forcibly removed if they're causing too much of a delay. Later edit: nah. If they're jobbed into the event crew, there's no need. They can be planked or expelled by the Captain if necessary. Only if the ship isn't generating tokens is it a problem.
  • I'm not quite clear on how the "live" judging and the video judging go together. What are the relative weightings of the "technical merit" and "artistic impression" scores? Are they both scored out of 10 and then added together? Essentially, how important is the ability to put together a swanky video compared to doing the actual manoeuvres?

Response to the thoughts

Holding it on Ice does seem like a good idea, especially since you can manipulate the blockade rounds. I would however require a lot more assistance from the OMs if I were to hold it there, not just for the ships, but also for the prizes themselves.

As for the scoring, I was thinking of doing it much like they do in actual figure-skating, such as scoring for both technical and artistic merit. The judges would look at the technical side during the actual event and score accordingly (on things like if they respected the time limit, bumping, lack of coordination, use of obstacles on the board, etc) on a scale of 1-10. And then there'd be judging on the artistic side, which, now that I think about it, would probably be a good idea to let people edit as they wish (as long as they only use footage of their own routine), since they'd already have been scored on the technical side. This would also be scored on a scale of 1-10.

Might want to come up with some specific guidelines for how judges are to score things. What is a manditory deduction. (ie crashing into each other, out of sinc on a move, etc.) I've been watching way to much Olympic Figure Skating. :P --Hawkings 11:10am 21 February 2006 (PST) Definitely, but I won't be making the specific guidelines public except for a few broad rules. The only people who will have the complete list of guidelines and the points associated with them will be the judges. --Dorel

Also, for the entering and exiting of the board in a timely manner, I would count that as part of the "Technical merit" side, meaning that in the 10 minutes alotted to them, they would have to enter the board, do their routine, and exit the board.

Does anyone have any suggestions for some good video-editing software? --Dorel 18:52, 20 February 2006 (PST) Check Astrolabe's entry. He has quite a few freeware and shareware video recording links on there. I would assume they could edit with that.

Extra though, which I believed I had included in my original response...but seem to have not... : Would the OMs be willing to magic up the different prizes on the different oceans, since, while I may have the contacts to obtain the prizes on Midnight, I have no clue as to who I'd contact on the other oceans for it.

I can certainly match prizes on other oceans, I do prefer giving out things over poe if possible. As far as what additional prizes you want from me, let me know what you'd like. Since prizes will be given out after the event, as it's now more of a forum event, we can worry about that later. To help, though, please have the entrants indicate what ocean they'd prefer to receive prizes as well as their pirate names.

Allright, instead of poe then, I could easily use your previous suggestion of a portrait (with copies for everyone, it would come around to the same amount, PoE-wise, if not more). My only worry is if the team has more then 7 people in it. Also, would it be possible to give out yellow (gold), gray (silver) and brown (bronze) ribbons to the top three finishers? And, would it be possible to get an OM to do the rename of the ship for free, or will I have to find the shanghais for it? --Dorel 04:56, 23 February 2006 (PST)

Final Prize and Support Information

As of right now, this is the list of prizes and support I have listed for the OM's to provide for you, if anything is not correct or complete you need to get in touch with me as soon as possible, I will not around the whole weekend! Please give the OM's plenty of time to respond to any requests and speak to them in advance if at all possible, for some of you that will be more important than others. I've given a copy of the standard OM schedule to Jacquilynne as well if I'm not available.

  • Prizes: One standard Ship rename, yellow or gold ribbon, gray ribbon, brown ribbon. (We could substitute Blue, Red and White ribbons if you preferred, brown is not pretty!) And if there happens to be larger teams than expected, I can help a bit with the poe for the portraits. You'll want to use the post-prize method for getting those done.
  • Support: Ice Blockades need to be reconfigured, please coordinate this with Artemis.
  • Post-Prizes: For all prizes being handled after the event you'll need to have the following information: Pirate, Ocean, Prize and any relevent inscriptions. Submit in a Petition and an Oceanmaster should either take care of it if they have time or leave it for someone to handle when they do.
