A tale to be told:

The Eye patch first came about in the golden age of piracy. It wasn't used (as often assumed) to cover an eye that has been plucked out, but rather as a shield on one eye from the light of day, while the other one is left exposed. Since pirates were rather 'sloppy' deck hands, there was much moving about done on ships; very often, a pirate would have to venture into the hold of the ship for supplies of some sort, or go below decks to assume a new position (or releave someone of their duty). However, all the switching back and forth between light and dark strained the eyes of the pirate. Thus, the eye 'patch' (patch is trully not the best word for it) was born. A pirate would simply switch the patch from one eye to the other when switching decks, so as to maintain one eye at all times, adjusted to the darkness of the inner ship. However, this did have one setback in its design: with only one eye that could see at a time, a pirate had limited vision. Both the periferal and depth aspects of normal sight were hinderred. This also lead to only the more skilled mates to wear the eye 'patch', and it soon came to be a symbol that captains and officers used to instill fear into their enemies. Its second purpose of striking fear into opponents was only possible because many 'civilized' (were they so civil?) sailors assumed that under that eye patch was the hole from the pirate's second eye that had been plucked out in some ferocious battle.
