A merchant brig is a type of ship that is used primarily in the storage and trading of commodities. While its hold is not as large as the galleon, it is much easier to transport with a small crew. While a merchant brig can be used other types of voyages, its stations are geared more towards moving the ship then rather then attacking other ships.
