Travel Tips
Where to Fly into
- "Many Key West visitors fly into Miami International Airport (MIA) (PHONE: 305/876-7000, www.miami-airport.com), 7 miles west of downtown Miami, rent a car, and drive south to Key West." - Fodors.com (Lots of other useful information on that website)
- Bear in mind that if you drive down and stay at La Concha, parking is $18/night.
Getting to Key West from nearby Areas
- Shuttles direct to Key West from Miami Airport are $80 per adult or from Ft. Lauderdale for $90 per adult. For more info see Florida Keys Shuttle.
- For those who wish to take a catamaran to Key West from Fort Myers, it is a 3 1/2 hour tour for approximately $60-80. For more info see Key West Express.
Frequent Flyer Miles / Reward Points
While Key West is a much more expensive flight than many larger destinations in Florida, most rewards programs calculate their rewards based on zones, rather than specific destinations. Thus, if you have the reward miles to fly into Miami or Ft. Lauderdale, it's probably the same number of miles to fly directly into Key West. Because of the relative expense of paying for the flight, this would be a high value flight to use them on.
Other Saving Tips
Camping
If you want to camp it's about $60 a night plus minimal supplies. It is windy and gets kinda cold during the night, especially during winter, so pack lots of blankets.
