To get a rank you have to show your trust, respect and loyalty. When you think you meet the requirements you may ask the captain to get that rank. But never beg for it! Asking to obtain a certain rank all the time will end up in not getting that rank at all, even though you might have deserved it.

Officer: You need broad sails, carp and bilge. Also you need to know how to lead a pilly.

Fleet Officer: Broad BNAV and Gunning, requirements of officer and the captains trust.

Senior Officer: This is only my choice. I will choose my Senior Officers based on trust, loyalty and also their activity.
