From YPPedia

Welcome to the Help desk! This is a place to ask questions about YPPedia and get help with editing problems. We mostly answer questions from newcomers, but veterans are welcome too. Remember to check this page again (how about a bookmark?) to see whether there have been any replies. For older questions & answers, take a look at the help desk archives.

Important notes

  • This is not the place to plead or discuss a ban. If you have been banned, please read this thread.
  • This is not a technical support section. If you are having problems in the game, please use the Technical Issues forum.
  • Please search for terms in your question before asking it. You may find the answer within the YPPedia.

How to ask a question

  • First, see if your question has been answered already.
  • Please give questions a meaningful title so you'll be more likely to get a meaningful answer.
  • Be specific and clarify your question, describing specifically what you'd like answered.
  • Please sign your question by typing --~~~~ at the end.
  • Please do not list your e-mail address, as questions aren't normally answered by e-mail. Also, be aware that the content on YPPedia is extensively copied on the forums and in-game, and so making your e-mail address public here may make it very public throughout the Internet.
  • Please check back for updates occasionally. A complete answer may be developed over a period of days.
  • To continue a question, edit your question section (by clicking the [edit] link on right side of its header line). Please do not start multiple sections about the same topic.
  • Please remember that readers of all ages visit this page.
  • Please avoid using all capital letters; not only do they make a question harder to read, but they are often interpreted as impolite or shouting.
  • Questions will be answered by humans, not by a computer. This page is not a search engine.

How to answer a question

  • Please be thorough, providing as much of the answer as you are able.
  • Be concise, not terse. Please write in a clear and easily understood manner. Keep your answer within the scope of the question as stated.
  • Link to page on YPPedia which may have further information relevant to the question.
  • The Help desk is not a soapbox. If you wish to argue a particular viewpoint, please do so on an appropriate talk page.

install

i have two questions 1st y cant i reinstall the game my desktop shortcut stopped working so i uninstalled my game then i triedto reinstall it and it wouldnt go plz explain y that happened

You should use the Technical Issues forum for this sort of question - more people read that. This helpdesk is for wiki related questions. It's hard to say what went wrong without any further knowledge (error message for example). Make sure there is enough free space on your computer. --Alfwyn 19:38, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

My Pirate has Been Replaced!

I have been playing puzzle pirates for sometime. And I tried to play on a different computer and it asked me to make a new pirate so I did. I then went back to my usual computer and my original pirate was still there. My sister resently made a new account and used puzzle pirates. When I went to log on today my original pirate had been replaced with the pirate I had made on a different computer. Me and my sister had both used the "Viridian" Ocean. As I have bought dubloons I am not happy! Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thank you.

Same name crews on different oceans...how to create unrelated seperate wiki page.

I'm trying to create a wiki crew page on the Midnight Ocean. Whenever I type in the name of the crew it redirects me to a crew with the same name on the VIRIDIAN ocean. I have searched all over yppedia and cannot seem to figure out how to create a new wiki page for the crew because of this. I am certain that there is a way to correct this as I know it is possible to have 2 crews on separate oceans with the same name and have them both listed in wiki, but I am obviously overlooking or not looking in the right place on how to do this. The name of the wiki crew page I am trying to create for the Midnight ocean is called: "Rated Arr". (Again, when I type this in, it sends me to the crew named "Rated Arr" on the Viridian ocean and these crews are unrelated/unaffiliated to one another.)Thank you for helping me with this.

Wikis use disambiguation pages to help separate articles with the same name. If two crews share the same name, we name each crew article with the ocean name is parentheses such as Rated Arr (Meridian). I moved the Viridian crew to the new name and created the disambiguation page. The crew page for the Midnight crew can now be created under the name Rated Arr (Midnight). You can link straight to the relevant crew page using templates such as {{Midnight}} (Usage) and {{Viridian}} (Usage). --Sagacious (talk) 14:25, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

pirate page

how do i make a page of my pirate? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Arvom (talkcontribs)

Help:Creating an article is a good place to start if you haven't created an article before. There is a section at the bottom specifically about pirate pages. Be sure to read the YPPedia:Style guide for some information about how to write articles and edit content such as templates. --Sagacious (talk) 15:24, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

Trophy Picture Update

I need 6 more brig kill before I reach 200 sinks therefore I will get the silver Brig Trophy. There is no picture yet of that on the trophy page and i was wondering how i could contribute to that as soon as i get the trophy. Do I have to contact someone or can I upload it myself to the trophy page

Thank you very much for your help in advance

--Asasinate 15:12, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

If you're confident enough to update the trophy page yourself, then go ahead =) Just save the trophy image from your trophy page via a web browser, make sure it's named like the other trophy images and include the trophy image tag {{trophy image}} (Usage) in the description when uploading. If you get stuck, I'm sure one of the other editors will assist with the addition. --Sagacious (talk) 15:19, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Trophies

I would like to add the silver ghost brig trophy to the trophy page but I have no clue how to do it. how could I ask an editor to help. Where do I have to go to get such help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Asasinate (talkcontribs)

The trophy page can be quite complex to follow and edit, particularly if you've not edited the YPPedia before. I've added the Silver Ghost Brig to the article, you can see the changes I made to the trophy article here and the image page here. --Sagacious (talk) 18:38, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your help earlier with updating the trophy page. I was wondering if you could help me one more time. My friend reeves from the ocean sage just got the golden sloop and would like to update the trophy page. Could you help with that? thank you very much in advance

Sloop is trapped

my sloop is traped on sea and i cant set it to sail can ya help me whit this problem i hope it wont stay on open sea forever

Your sloop will automatically reset and port to the nearest island within 30 minutes of being abandoned. This will happen as long as no other pirates board the ship in that time. I don't know why you could not set it to sail again, the reasons for this are many. If you want an answer, you should post on the forums with your question. I suggest New Player Forum, or Tips and Tricks, Questions and Answers. Please try to explain your situation in detail and you will receive speedy answers. Good luck. Italian YPPedia

Hi! Where can i place the articles that i will translate into Italian? Thanks, --Hatindur 12:25, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Video Embedding

Im wanting to embed a video to my flag and pirate page wiki. Many Wiki's allow video embedding but i have tried many variations of code and nothing works which leads me to believe its currently disabled. How do we go about getting this coding implemented? Who should I talk to?

I understand there may be certain issues with videos being posted on peoples wiki pages, but these are good quality videos showing the flag, pirates etc etc, nothing obscene or of any way a nature which should not be seen. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rudebwoi (talkcontribs)

As far as I'm aware you can't insert any external images/videos/audio on the wiki, they must first be uploaded to the YPPedia. However, videos aren't a permitted file type, probably because they need large amounts of bandwidth and server power. If they're on YouTube, you can always provide a link to the video within the article. --Katiekwala 16:57, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Edit protection on Official:Services

At some point the discount for ship half-renames was removed from Standard. Could the line "You cannot get a discount for only renaming half of the existing ship name." also be removed from the sub Custom? It implies that the lack of discount is only for customs, which is no longer true. --Firien 21:20, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

ships

what skills do you need to drive a ship? and any one got a guid to see what skill is were on the skill scale? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Magg82 (talkcontribs)

Well, you don't really need any skill in order to navigate a ship. All you need is officer rank in a crew and the corresponding badge or a subscription, depending on the ocean. Alternatively, you can sail a ship in the Navy on a mission. The requirements are easy to get, and are listed at the link.
To see a list of puzzle standings, and find out how they work, read the article on puzzle standing.
Also, your questions are related to game play and should really be asked in the Puzzle Pirates forums. This page is for help with using YPPedia itself. Chupchup 02:09, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

Portrait

I would like my newer portrait to be displayed on my info page (Nokota) since the other one is many years old, but I can't figure out how to do it. Nokota 16:59, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

I've done it for you. Here's how to do it in the future. Load your portrait in your browser by clicking on it in the game. Make sure you're viewing a regular-size one and not a "thumbnail". Right-click the portrait and "Save image as..." and put it somewhere you can find it. Don't worry if the name is long and incomprehensible, but you can rename it here if you wish. Then click on your portrait in the YPPedia. You will go to the page Image:Pirates-Nokota.jpg. Toward the bottom, it says "Upload a new version of this file". Click that, and now you're at an upload form. "Choose file" and browse to the file you saved before. "Destination filename" should already say "Pirates-Nokota.jpg". In "Summary" write {{portrait image}}. This is a template that says it's an image from Puzzle Pirates and explains the copyright. Then you can upload. You will have to purge your browser cache (or wait a while) for your image to appear properly. To purge, try shift-control-R to reload a page. An admin will be by shortly to delete the old version that's no longer used. Chupchup 22:53, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

How much time have I played puzzle pirates?

Is there any way to find out how much time or gameplay I have spent on puzzle pirates? Because I'd like to know.

Not for ordinary players. The Ringers have access to that information in the database, but as a matter of policy they do not reveal it to the public.
You can estimate the time you've spent playing by your combined experience ratings, because these are based on time spent in puzzles. While the exact figures are not released for these, you can at least tell the difference between "a little" (Apprentice) and "a lot" (Sublime).
For more information, check the forums. Chupchup 15:05, 22 July 2011 (PDT)

How do I delete my multiple contributions?

I thought that when I reloaded something it would tell me there was one already and let me replace it. This did not happen, nor did it replace items automatically. I also can't find a delete option. Please help? ~Texas

Looks like you accidentally re-uploaded it under a different name. Regular users can't delete images, but admins can - just edit the page with {{d}} (Usage) to mark it for deletion. --Belthazar451 16:47, 30 October 2011 (PDT)

Badge Duration

I am helping a friend ask this question. If I hold a Captain's Badge and I play from PP time 6pm to 1am, is it considered as 2 login days or 1 login day on the badge? Thank ye.

It counts as two days if you remain online past midnight pirate time. --Fannon 09:14, 2 December 2011 (PST)

Preventing the deletion of my pirate

I am rather concerned about my pirate being deleted due to inactivity for 6 weeks. I was told by an Ocean Master that I have to make a doubloon purchase so that my pirates would never be deleted no matter how long I am inactive. Being a teen without any credit cards, may I ask whether there is a method whereby I can save my pirates from inactivity without using credit card? Thank ye!

Puzzle Pirates accepts myriad payment options. Go to https://billing.puzzlepirates.com/billing/shared/select_type.jspx to see a complete list. A popular method is to use Cash Cards from Target, 7-Eleven, Rite Aid, and Walmart. Choose either the Ultimate Game Card or the Three Rings Card. You could also use Rixty, PayByCash, PayPal or any of the other listed options. Chupchup 18:13, 5 December 2011 (PST)

Additional pages for my pirate page

Since the oceans merged I obviously need to update my pirate page (Evilduck). I think I vaguely recall seeing a page created as a sort of addition to a pirate page - yppedia.com/Piratename/AdditionalPage. Is that sort of thing acceptable? I wanted to basically move my current pirate page to a new page and use yppedia.com/Evilduck for all the new ocean information.

just checked your pirate's page...looks to be already updated. also, does not appear to have so much data in that one page as to need subpages.
generally (from what I understand), subpages are "allowed" ;-) only when needed and/or justified, usually for listing all data for one specific subtopic of interest within the parent article. examples would be: listing all of a pirate's -renamed ships-, all of a pirate's -trinkets-, or all -events hosted- by the pirate.
also, from what I've seen here, the only time having separate articles for pirates of the same name but on different oceans has been approved has been when those pirates actually were -separate-, i.e. played by -different- people, and -not- when just different incarnations of the same pirate/player...hope this helps!! -- Franklincain (t/c) 06:00, 20 June 2012 (PDT)  ;-)

YPPedia page - Changing displayed pirate portrait

hello, i have a yppedia page (yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/Growlsjr) and i just want to know how to change the display portrait on my page —Preceding unsigned comment added by Growlsjr1 (talkcontribs)

You've done the correct steps. Now get your web browser to refresh the page to ensure it is displaying the most recent image. -- Faulkston 18:18, 1 April 2012 (PDT)
You will often need to purge the cache, which is typically done by holding 'shift' along with the refresh keys: for example - shift-ctrl-R, or shift-F5. Chupchup 16:37, 2 April 2012 (PDT)

show trophy (and other) spoilers -- how to?

—Preceding unsigned comment added by Merchani (talkcontribs)

go to the top-right corner of YPPedia in your browser, and look for "my preferences". click on that link. then, you will be taken to your preferences. there, look for the 2nd tab, "appearance". click that. on that tab, check which "skin" you are using. odds are, you're using the Puzzle Pirates one. that skin does not support the "show/hide" feature used by spoilers, so you will need to choose one of the other skins, such as "monobook". then, scroll down to the bottom of that page, and click on "save" to save your choice. as an aside, using CAPS-LOCK for your entire message is generally considered rude, as it is the internet equivalent to shouting. also, try to make your subject heading more precise and less angst-y. hope this helps!! -- Franklincain (t/c) 05:47, 20 June 2012 (PDT)  ;-)

tag an unsigned comment - how?

ref: various posts mentioning "previous unsigned comment"...is there an official-and/or-approved template for posting those comments? if so, please identify it, for future use. don't want to re-invent the wheel each time I update such comments. thanks in advance!! -- Franklincain (t/c) 05:51, 20 June 2012 (PDT)  ;-)

{{unsigned}} (Usage). --Belthazar451 12:53, 20 June 2012 (PDT)
Note that the 'unsigned' template should always be substed, which is probably why you couldn't immediately figure out what it was. Chupchup 16:24, 20 June 2012 (PDT)
what do you mean, "substed"? I do not understand...edit: do you mean this? -- Franklincain (t/c) 17:21, 20 June 2012 (PDT)
Yes. Chupchup 21:57, 20 June 2012 (PDT)
ok...but I do not understand -why- I'd need to do that. why can't I just use this template the "regular" way? what is the advantage or reason for using the "subst" keyword with it? (asked in genuine ignorance; not being a smart ass.) thanks! -- Franklincain (t/c) 08:20, 21 June 2012 (PDT)
Benefits and drawbacks are listed on the Wikipedia link you already provided. Chupchup 19:19, 21 June 2012 (PDT)

Create (and keep) a redirect for "Link Title"?

According to the Wanted pages, we "need" an article named "Link Title". And yet, that page has been created and then deleted numerous times. So, instead of continuing this cycle, wouldn't it be more efficient to create a redirect instead, one that points to an article (or even to just this section here?) explaining that "Link Title" is a generic place-holder and is not an actual true "link"?... -- Franklincain (t/c) 10:25, 26 August 2012 (PDT)

Leaving the page nonexistant means it'll show up as a redlink, which lets us easily spot that something's wrong. It also gives it as an entry on the Wanted Pages list, as you noticed, which gives us an easy way of finding what links there. Basically, if it's a page in the user namespace, just tolerate it - the user namespace is exempt from most of the wiki rules. Otherwise, fix each page individually.
Besides, since when has the easy blanket solution been your first thought? --Belthazar451 13:54, 26 August 2012 (PDT)

Cant uppload an image (portrait

I get the File extension does not match MIME type. message.. It's a normal .JPEG and have tried different pictures and .GIF but I always get File extension does not match MIME type. Tried it on a different computer and still same message. I just want to upload an portrait for my side.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rechivas (talkcontribs)

Sounds like you were trying to upload a file that was a different type to the one that the wiki was expecting to get, though I couldn't really guess how that would have happened - maybe you accidentally converted the portrat to a .png file? Either way, I just uploaded it without issue. --Belthazar451 13:43, 20 May 2013 (PDT)
I had the same problem trying to upload a .jpg. I finally got fed up and converted it to a .png and it uploaded just fine. It looks like there was something subtly wrong with the file; it's right enough that it can be viewed just fine and its properties look pretty normal...but some of the metadata isn't displaying in windows explorer the way it does for my other .jpgs. Maybe it was just one bit short of a full .jpg? ;) --Budclare2 01:34, 22 December 2013 (PST)
