YPPedia:Help desk

From YPPedia

Welcome to the Help desk! This is a place to ask questions about YPPedia and get help with editing problems. We mostly answer questions from newcomers, but veterans are welcome too. Remember to check this page again (how about a bookmark?) to see whether there have been any replies. For older questions & answers, take a look at the help desk archives.

Important notes

  • This is not the place to plead or discuss a ban. If you have been banned, please read this thread.
  • This is not a technical support section. If you are having problems in the game, please use the Technical Issues forum.
  • Please search for terms in your question before asking it. You may find the answer within the YPPedia.

How to ask a question

  • First, see if your question has been answered already.
  • Please give questions a meaningful title so you'll be more likely to get a meaningful answer.
  • Be specific and clarify your question, describing specifically what you'd like answered.
  • Please sign your question by typing --~~~~ at the end.
  • Please do not list your e-mail address, as questions aren't normally answered by e-mail. Also, be aware that the content on YPPedia is extensively copied on the forums and in-game, and so making your e-mail address public here may make it very public throughout the Internet.
  • Please check back for updates occasionally. A complete answer may be developed over a period of days.
  • To continue a question, edit your question section (by clicking the [edit] link on right side of its header line). Please do not start multiple sections about the same topic.
  • Please remember that readers of all ages visit this page.
  • Please avoid using all capital letters; not only do they make a question harder to read, but they are often interpreted as impolite or shouting.
  • Questions will be answered by humans, not by a computer. This page is not a search engine.

How to answer a question

  • Please be thorough, providing as much of the answer as you are able.
  • Be concise, not terse. Please write in a clear and easily understood manner. Keep your answer within the scope of the question as stated.
  • Link to page on YPPedia which may have further information relevant to the question.
  • The Help desk is not a soapbox. If you wish to argue a particular viewpoint, please do so on an appropriate talk page.

Trinket templates

Is it just me, or is there no templates for Pins? If there is, could someone point me in the right direction?

There are some trinkets that do not yet have templates. Especially the ones that have a lot of variables for colors/metal colors because making the color charts for these things is extremely tedious detail work. Plus I'm not sure anyone has devised a method for handling more than two variables in a graceful manner. For a list of the trinket templates that are currently available, see Howto:Use the My trinkets template where you can find a link to the listing. --Guppymomma 19:38, 10 January 2008 (PST)

how?

How can i do crew portrait?

To insert a crew portrait on the YPPedia, simply find a person in the crew. Enter the web address http://OCEAN.puzzlepirates.com/yoweb/pirate.wm?target=NAME replacing the OCEAN and NAME with the ocean and pirate name respectively. On their pirate page, click the crew name in the top left corner of the page. Now click the portrait on the right on the page, and on the next page, right click the portrait and click "Save Image As..." and save a copy to your desktop. Now return to the YPPedia and click the "Upload file" link in the toolbox (bottom left of the screen). Select the portrait, give it the name Crews-YOURCREWNAMEHERE.jpg, and insert the {{portrait image}} (Usage) template in the summary field. --Nicksterv (t/c) 04:00, 12 January 2008 (PST)

I think the Bludgeons, Hammer, Skull Rings and Blackjack should have an added notation regarding them being the best bludgeons to use vs bots. These Bludgeons include Bruises in their strike pattern which are much like the combos of SF. The Hammer being best and justifying it's high cost, followed by Skull Rings, and then Blackjack. Likewise vs Bots the Fish could be considered the worst as it gives the bots a precharged ball.

Portrait

I wish to change my portrait in my pirate's article (Wiffred.)

Click on the portrait in the pirate article and then on the next page which appears, click "Upload a new version of this file". -- Faulkston 20:43, 22 January 2008 (PST)

Edit Article Name

Is there any way to change an articles name because I entered the name in with the words begining in capital letters but unfortunatly the article is in lower case.

It's possible to move an article to a new name. Be sure to change any existing links to point to the renamed article. -- Faulkston 20:30, 24 January 2008 (PST)

Please delete image:pirates-shalimar-cobalt.jpg

My apologies, as I goofed on the filename and didn't realize that the pirate template looked for pirates-piratename.jpg exclusively. I've uploaded a duplicate with the correct filename. --Dobdobbodpa 18:22, 2 February 2008 (PST)

Links to Forum

Would be giving sources in form of links into the forum be a good idea ? And if yes, how to link nicely to an individual article. The example link here gets me onto the correct page, but not to the article intended. But once I go to the url bar in my browser and press enter I'm at the correct article. I get the same behaviour both with Mozilla and IE. --Alfwyn 15:19, 10 February 2008 (PST)

Links like these have been placed in YPPedia articles before. The post within a thread is scrolled to correctly in Firefox, perhaps there is a problem in IE where it's not possible to scroll to an HTML anchor before the entire page is loaded. Also I've found in Firefox (and likely IE too) that the scroll offset may be rather incorrect if the images in any posts in the thread's current page haven't finished loading. -- Faulkston 16:16, 10 February 2008 (PST)
Seems to be indeed a browser problem, thanks (I've tested some more now). --Alfwyn 15:20, 12 February 2008 (PST)

Chachapoya-Matariki route

  • The maps on the Chachapoya and Matariki pages conflict with the full map and what I can find in game in terms of the number of league points. I'd fix this myself, but I don't know how the map templates work. --Masterbratac 16:18, 18 February 2008 (PST)
They aren't that hard to edit. Is the full map the correct one? If so I could update the islands charts using that info. -- Vorky 16:27, 18 February 2008 (PST)
The full map matches the in-game map, so I assume it's the correct one. Thanks. --Masterbratac 16:30, 18 February 2008 (PST)
Done. Also updated the route colors on those and the archipelago charts as well. -- Vorky 17:50, 18 February 2008 (PST)

checking for article existance

Portraits

On my page, the portrait there is just blank, because i didnt have a portrait at the time of creation Now i DO have a portrait, and im afraid that if i revise the blank portrait the blakc portrait on EVERYONES page who doesnt have a portrait will have my portrait.

Basically, how do I put a different portrait on my page without screwing everything up?

Simply add "|portrait=yes" to the pirate infobox on your page, and then upload a portrait file using the link that then comes up (Image:Pirates-Chickenfist.jpg) -- Vorky 15:54, 24 February 2008 (PST)

Editing a wiki page

Is there a way to break an automatic link created in an article?

Beta Island (Midnight) has an estate "Altered Estates". There is a wiki article about Altered Estates, referring to an Estate Agent on Sage. I do not wish to link to this article, as they are two completely different entities.

You can specify the name as Altered Estates (Midnight){{!}}Altered Estates to link it to the (right now non-existing) Midnight article for the building. Disclaimer: I did only rudimentary tests with the {{!}} template so far --Alfwyn 07:09, 9 March 2008 (PDT)
Links to pages requiring an ocean disambiguation should be in the form of {{Oceanname|Name_to_be_disambiguated}}. So for page in question, it would be entered as {{Midnight|Altered Estates}}. Please do not use the above recommendation. -- Cedarwings (talk) 09:41, 9 March 2008 (PDT)

Failed move weirdness

Half of the page history of Vypra can be found at what seems to be a move failed in the middle of the process. The broken other half has some references cropping up now and then and can be edited and previewed (I didn't want to try a save), but not viewed or moved (Edit link). Any chance of integrating the edit history and then getting rid of the weirdness ? --Alfwyn 14:30, 12 March 2008 (PDT)

Images

i was wondering why i can not have images with my pirate info page when i can see that peperox has the same sort of pictures i had and now i have to stick with writing? is there any way i could have atleast some pictures of swords and bludgeons?

Well, try to find the name of the images that are already here, instead of uploading duplicates of them under a different name. They are named quite consistenly, so if you know for example that the distillery icon is named Image:Icon_distillery.png, you can guess that the one for the iron monger is Image:Icon_iron_monger.png. The fish would be Image:Icon Fish.png. If you really need a specific colored image of the fish, leave me a message at User_talk:Alfwyn and we can find a way to extract the desired one from Image:Fish_colors.png. --Alfwyn 08:47, 16 March 2008 (PDT)

Karkinos

Info Box for Karkinos Crab pet? What is the code for it as images seem to be missing when attempting.

It will be Karkinos I guess. A first step for the implementation is to find out the color range (see Karkinos) and after that getting at least one image for each body color and each highlight color. --Alfwyn 11:39, 25 March 2008 (PDT)
I've got a Blue/Grey one if someone wants to snag the image for it then, can also start to trackdown other owners and list them to be contacted for images also if a contact list can be established to add to. --Everclearboy
Finding owners would be useful indeed. With the new /print command making useful screenshots (how they look in the inventory/trade window) shouldn't be too hard, although some may want to cut out additional information like PoE held. If they PM me I can give them an email address to send the screenshots too. Alternatively I try to catch you/them in game and take a screenshot of the Karkinos in the trade window. --Alfwyn 06:15, 28 March 2008 (PDT)

Numbers between brackets in recent changes

I've noticed since the last update (I'm guessing the MediaWiki update) some numbers with + or - are appearing besides edits in recent changes. Can't help but wonder what do they mean. Thank You! --Cecidrake 18:57, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Those numbers are the amount of bytes added to or subtracted from the page in question. I was confused when I first saw them too. --Fiddler 19:15, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
You can also think of them as number of characters added or subtracted. -3,497 is going to be quite significant content removal. Recent changes patrollers can quickly assess the likelihood of an edit being good or bad using this.
Technically, it's a measure of bytes - where each character = 1 byte, which includes spaces, punctuation and new lines. EN Wikipedia has had this feature for ages, you should hang out there more often :P Another neat addition is if all content is removed from an article, an automatic edit summary of "Blanked the page" will appear. Maybe we already had this, but it's becoming ever more useful of EN Wiki. --Sagacious (talk) 19:30, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for the answer mates! --Cecidrake 21:52, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Upload a picture of a portrait

how can you upload a picture of a portait to you pirate forum.

Do you mean upload a portrait image to the YPPedia or have it visible in an external or internal forum (message board). If it's the former, you can find instructions here. -- Faulkston 01:31, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

Editing an existing pirate page

Hello ^_^ I'm new to this, and I seem to be having troubles editing my individual pirate page. When I click on "edit" or "expand stub", a file called index.php opens. At first I assumed you edited that file and uploaded it to the correct location, but apparently it doesn't work like that. If someone could give me a brief overview on what I have to do to save an edited version of a page, I'd be very greatful ^_^

The editing page should come up much like the page you used to ask this question - as a form with a big white box. Which web browser are you using? Once you've got it working, you might want to check here for further details about how pages are created and edited. --Nicksterv 00:14, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
I figured that it should come up as the box :P I actually used the ask a question link to edit this, which worked... However, on the pirate page, with Mozilla (version 3), it opens the index.php file thing, and with Internet Explorer (version 6, I think), it says that the page cannot be opened... I've checked on a few other pages, and I'm theoretically able to edit those that have an "edit" option under each category (as in the Royalty page, but I still can't access the editing option for mine or other individual pirate pages. I have all the code prepared, I'm just unsure of how to actually get it in there Lol.. and thank you ^_^ --Enspirit
At the top of the page, below the blue and tan border that appears on all Puzzlepirates.com pages, you should see the word "edit" that will allow you to edit the page. Click on that word. -- Cedarwings (talk) 19:36, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
You're not running some HTML re-writing proxy or using some sort of browser plugin/script e.g. Greasemonkey, which would be interacting in some unexpected way with the YPPedia page option menu? -- Faulkston 20:04, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
Cedarwings - clicking on the top edit link brings up the index.php "Open File" thing :P So does the "discuss the page" link >.< Faulkston - I don't believe so... I can view the history, and can theoretically 'move' the page. Also, when I press 'edit' when logged off, the script in the box does come up, but, being logged off, I can't edit :P I tried changing my password (it had underscores) but that didn't change anything :P Sorry to be causing so much trouble >.<
EDIT: It works now ^_^ I logged in with another account, and was able to edit ^_^ Thanks for helping :D --Enspirit (/e isn't sure what to do about the date/time thing Lol) ^_^
To have your signature with a date and time, it's simply four tildes - that is, for me, ~~~~ will produce "Belthazar451 00:07, 28 July 2008 (UTC)". Alternately, you can push the button above the edit box that's second from the right - it has a little squiggle on it. That will produce --~~~~. A la: --Belthazar451 00:07, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks!! ^_^ --Enspirit 03:28, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Crew name problem

Hello, im trying to create an info page on the wiki for my crew 'Midnight Spirits' on the midnight ocean. It says to create a page, type my crew name in the search box, then click on the red name and create page, simple enough..but theres a crew on hunter with the same name. so searches are just bringing that crews info up. Is there a way i can still create a page for my crew on Midnight?

Because there is a crew with the same name on different oceans, we create a disambiguation page for the existing crew name, and correct the links to the old page. An example would be Scuppering Seven Seas. I've gone ahead and moved the Hunter crew over to Midnight Spirits (Hunter), you can create your page at Midnight Spirits (Midnight)--Nicksterv 11:59, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Thank ye muchly mate ;).

Important but not urgent

How do i get my account back from the Ban Evasion. And i haven't done nothing..I was just trying to make a petition on how to get my other account back(Elmoluver02)..It says i was a theft..And NO ONE has used that account. And now i just got a Ban Evasion..For no reason..I just want to know what i've done to get that..I just want it back.

Creating a second account to bypass being banned is ban evasion, and that in itself is a bannable offense. The Ringers have ways for you to protest being banned, and creating another account or using a friend's account to make a petition is not the way. To find out about submitting a ban plea, see ban. --Belthazar451 05:41, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Username login problem -- case sensistivity?

Ahoy, mates. Tried to log on today and ended up on "Ltpowers" instead of "LtPowers". "Ltpowers" has no contribution history, which makes it kinda hard to look at my watchlist and check my contributions. (Compare Special:Contributions/Ltpowers versus Special:Contributions/LtPowers.) abbreviated my trinket assistance

I am useing the abbreviated my trinket code on Vova's trinket page, and I need assistance with the Jolly Roger pin code please. I see the full version but that is just not what I use. I am trying to create a rose/white silver pin. Thanks!

For three-colour trinkets like the Jolly Roger pin, you actually need to call the tertiary parameter by name. That is, you'll need to call it with (for example) {{my trinkets|Jolly Roger pin|rose|white|tertiary=silver|text=I'll call him George}}. This code will produce:
I'll call him George

Flag Infoboxes

I made a flag infobox but CANT find the flag id number... the flag is Security Forces. Can anyone help me?

If you go to your flag's Yoweb info page, you'll find the flagid in the url. As an example, let's take Dies Irae's Yoweb page: http://midnight.puzzlepirates.com/yoweb/flag/info.wm?flagid=10005534
See the bit at the end that says "flagid=10005534"? That's the flagid =)
The easiest way to get to your flag's infopage is to start from a pirate in the flag and click the link. A pirate's Yoweb infopage can be found at http://OCEANNAME.puzzlepirates.com/yoweb/pirate.wm?target=PIRATENAME, with oceanname and piratename replaced with whatever your pirate's ocean and name are. --Belthazar451 22:16, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

How do i make my pirate?

im not sure how to get my name on teh hunter pirate list. i also want to know how to edit it, like my friend iceicebaby has his on there...i want mine done teh exact same way...any help?

I've used the template {{oceans|#=1|Hunter}} to indicate that this pirate can be found on the Hunter Ocean. If the pirate is later created on say the Malachite Ocean, then the template can be edited to read {{oceans|#=2|Hunter|Malachite}} to indicate the additional ocean the pirate exists on. -- Faulkston 03:21, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Loading/Formatting Issue with some pages?

I don't know if this is the correct place for this, but when I was searching for shipyard, I found the page to not load and remain blank. At first I thought it was just my internet, but when I looked at many other pages, most of them worked.

The Tailor page also didn't work, and had many lines of code not correctly formatted.

I don't know if anyone knows why, but I'd appreciate the help. ^^

The YPPedia seems to be having some issues with larger pages - Shipyard doesn't load properly for me either. Nor does Viridian blockade history, to give another example. I think we've just gotta hold tight and wait for word from above. --Belthazar451 03:17, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Un-deletion of Pirates

PLEASE! help me, can someone re instate my pirate?? my former friend must have cracked it with something, or loged a keylogger on my computer, and when we had a fight he deleted my character... Cursed_Isle_Introduction

Thanks for pointing out those problems. They've now been fixed. - Faulkston 03:25, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

I would like to add additional information regarding the Brigand Kings and their "level" of difficulty in defeating. If there is a guideline or suggest as to how this should be stated or shown on their pages, would like to be shown.

Add the information to the article and then editors will reformat it if necessary. -- Faulkston 02:13, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Cleaning up trinket display box

Could I get some help with my trinket display box thing? It looks horrible =/ My page: http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/Iceicebaby you have permission to fix it if you wish, or just tell me. :D Thanks

Better now ? You can make the table occupying the whole width by using {{My trinkets/start|width=100%}}, but I'm not sure that it looks better. --Alfwyn 23:54, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Reply: Much better, thanks a heap :) Is the trick just putting them closer together, with no spaces? I didn't notice much difference, and I prefer it like that, less space used ^^

Aye, removing the blank lines between the trinket templates was the main fix. That this is necessary may be a bug, I'm trying to find out why this is the case. The other thing was closing the whole table, that is putting a |} at the end, to match the {| at the start of the trinket box. --Alfwyn 12:45, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

because i have an idea for a puzzle so yea i havnt been on yppedia much but i have many ideas so yea not sure how or if i get an awnser but ill try and figure it out XD thank you for reading this if you did and yea so thats the end

If you'd like to propose new puzzles or modifications to existing ones, the place to go is the Game Design forum. The announcement thread has the rules for this forum.
There are many resources which may be helpful:
  • The List of ideas already given approval by the Game Developers. However this is not a delivery schedule and as the game gets updated, some of the ideas may become obsolete or unnecessary.
  • The Anti-list of ideas disapproved by the Game Developers. Note that they're not totally ruled out but the Game Developers often had some fairly strong objections. Any discussion on such ideas should start by addressing these objections, although the Game Developers are fairly firm on philosophical objections e.g. personal firearms in Puzzle Pirates.
  • Commonly discussed ideas is a fairly comprehensive listing of previously proposed ideas. Generally the Game Developers have not posted approvals or disapprovals of these ideas.
  • Search to see if your idea has come up before. You may prefer to use Google or some other search engine that you're more comfortable with. You can ask for help with searching in this thread:
http://forums.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=6605
Generally you can expect a response within 24 hours, though hard to find answers to questions may take slightly longer.
If there's an existing discussion thread to reply to and it's older than a few months, be sure to call attention to the age of the thread. Putting the word "Bump" at the start of your reply will do.

can i upload designs of islands from the create a island thing???

i made some kool island s on the create thingy and i wanna know if i can show them to the people who run puzzle pirates and maybe ask if they could add it

There is a dedicated thread on the forums for showing and getting feedback on player created islands: Beat the Champs - Redux. As for uploading the designs, have a look at Hosting_files. --Alfwyn 17:47, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Clear

When exactly should the {{Clear}} tag be added? I see it at the end of a lot of pages and as far as I understand its usage has no visible effect at the end of a page. Maybe it is a remaining tag from times when the stub template was not automatically aligned below the pirate box? -- Kamuflaro 23:27, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Whenever you need to clear aligned images or tables. It's a br clear=all. --Guppymomma 23:41, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, to sum up: The Clear template moves the next element down past any images or alike, that could be getting in the way. Due to the stub templates having been added a Clear tag at some point all Clear tags at the end of stubed pages (right before the stubing) are now obsolete -- Kamuflaro 22:59, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

Baltic Angels third-person tag

Is the Baltic Angels page now sufficiently third-personly worded to remove the tag? Or does it need more adjustment? (Some of the content seems un-useful to me, but that is a separate issue which I will discuss with the captain when time permits)

I think it was, because the 1st person passages were not marked as being copied and pasted from the crew's statements. I took the freedom to edit the other passages slightly by wording and removed the tag. If you want to copy and paste the promotion criterias from the private statement I would mark them as such, maybe like: Private Statement - Promotion Criterias -- Kamuflaro 10:04, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
Wow, that was quick! Thank you. And sorry for forgetting to add my signature above, I keep doing that.... --Lesleywalker 10:19, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Previewing template changes

I'm a bit confused sadly with the previewing of a template that inherits templates. Is there any speedy technique providing a preview to an example using the edited template? I don't want to flood the recent changes while learning to edit templates. -- Kamuflaro 19:53, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Nope. It's a bit of a bummer, but I usually apologize in the edit summary after my fifth edit or so.--Fiddler 21:46, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
The issue is that when a page calls a template, it calls the saved version, but the changes don't get saved on the template until you push "submit". The same applies even if a template's usage notes call the template itself. All I can suggest is to do a mock-up in the user namespace first, and try to keep attempts to a minimum. =) --Belthazar451 22:45, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Image History

If I wanted to change an image, I asume I simply upload a new version? What happens with the old version? Shouldn't certain types of images be archived in some form? -- Kamuflaro 18:25, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

When you upload a new version of an image, the old version is retained in the file history. For an example, take a look at this image page --Nicksterv 19:49, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Ah ok thanks, are there types of images where old versions are deleted manually rather than archived, like solo pirate images? -- Kamuflaro 20:13, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Yes, portraits and other images that don't have the historical value like the island build-up progression tend to have older versions deleted. However, with the update of our MediaWiki version several months ago, the software actually saves older versions so that admins are able to undelete them. The other reason why we remove old portraits is that due to the cache thing & uploading new versions, it's easy for new editors to get confused and accidentally hit revert to a previous one. Deleting older versions helps keep those incidents under control. --Guppymomma 20:59, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Ok thanks, quite an eloberative answer :) -- Kamuflaro 22:29, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Adding a "Contents" box to a page

I cannot seem to find what coding will add a contents box at the top of an article to hot link to the sections within an article. Is there a minimum number of headings before adding a contents box? Thanks

There's a minimum number before one will automatically appear, but you can force one to appear (in the place of your choosing also) using the command __FORCETOC__ (note those are double underscores). By the same token, you can suppress a contents box using __NOTOC__. --Belthazar451 03:58, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
It's 3 sections before it will appear. Note that it only appears for those who have enabled the option to show the TOC with 3 or more headings (unless it has been forced to appear). --Thunderbird 06:56, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Trinket lists

What would be reason against disallowing trinketlists on pirate pages? I'm asking because I intend to make a list for my pirate, but recently read up on why standard named shiplists are prohibited on pirate pages. Kamuflaro 23:50, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Too big, basically. No point in having a page which is two-thirds trinkets. They're allowed, they just need to be hidden if they're longer than twelve. --Belthazar451 01:54, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

I think I was unclear, let me quote Ponytailguy:

* They're impossible for anyone but the subject of the page to maintain,
which goes against the wiki tenet of pages being maintainable by the community.
* They're impossible for anyone to verify or confirm,
which goes against another basic wiki tenet.
* They rarely add much to the page in question.
(I mean, really... does it matter to you that
Weirdbeard's sloop is called the Ugly Cod?)
On the other hand, names of custom-renamed ships can be interesting
and impressive. Likewise, ship names (standard or otherwise) can be a functional
and perfectly valid part of a broader narrative or biography.
So I propose we set policy to say that pirate pages should not contain
lists of standard-named vessels.

All 3 points can be applied to trinkets too thus my question is: What would be speaking in favour of keeping our trinket lists? What makes us not ban them equally. An exception to this (like the custom named vessels) would be unique event reward trinkets. Kamuflaro 17:59, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Well, this would be stuff for the policy discussion page YPPedia_talk:Policies_and_guidelines. But I think such a policy would be a bad thing, primarily because trinkets are in widespread use on pirate pages today, disallowing them would upset a lot of people. --Alfwyn 18:55, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
Also, unlike vessels, it's possible for pirates to display a trinket for anyone to see. Ditto for pets. It'd even be possible (though rather tedious) to display them all, one after the other. --Belthazar451 20:22, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks you gave me what I was looking for; quite an assurance that such a rule will not be added, at least not with community support; we'd just vote against ^^ Kamuflaro 20:49, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Pet Lists

Is it possible to display more than one pet on a pirate biography page and if so how? --Petty

Yes, by using the My pets template - it functions in basically the same way as the My trinkets template. You can find an example of the template in use here, if that'd help. =) --Belthazar451 21:01, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Redlinks in crew/flag infoboxes, yes or no?

When filling out an info box on a new crew or flag page, if a pirate's YPPedia page doesn't exist and I don't intend to create it, should I create redlinks or just leave the pirate name bare? (This question is triggered by a recent edit to Nautica Dominico which I created.) --Lesleywalker 10:05, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

My vote goes for leaving them as red links. For some reason, Addyrielle has been going around de-linking everything, but the point of red links is to go "hey! make me!". --Belthazar451 12:42, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
That's what I had in mind when I created the pages, and it's certainly the way things are done over at Wikipedia. But with so many pirates in the game that will probably never have YPPedia pages , I guess it's a grey area. --Lesleywalker 06:07, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

How do I link my newly created real life gathering announcement page to main YPPedia page?

Ahoy!

I have created a new page detailing our upcoming real-life gathering in Melbourne Australia (refer page Melbourne Meetup 2009). We would like to add this link to the "other links" at left hand side of main YPPedia page - same as the North Carolina meetup, however the "Real-life gatherings" page, where I believe the link should be added, is barred from editing - at least for me.

Do we need to get assistance from a Dev or Sysadmin for this? Can you please advise who/how/method to approach/fix?

Many many thanks in advance!

Hilbee on Midnight

--Hilarybasile 03:44, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

I've added your gathering to the appropriate page. -- Faulkston 04:29, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
Is there something extra special about the North Carolina meetup? That one has a link in the "Other links" section (left-hand panel, down from "YPP home" etc) so why wouldn't the Melbourne meetup be listed there too?
OK done. I poked around the MediaWiki namespace. -- Faulkston 05:48, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Invalid password, but only in Yppedia

I'm trying to figure out why Yppedia is rejecting my password. It's my forum account, false_dmitri. The password worked last time I tried it, when I edited a race entry. It still works on YPP forums. But it no longer works here. The only change since last time is stronger antivirus/firewall software. I'm able to log in fine with the account I'm using for this question. What could be causing this problem?

The problem is not with any antivirus/firewall software you are using. We have been experiencing this problem for a little while now and it is being investigated. Hopefully this problem will be rectified soon. -- Cedarwings (talk) 04:11, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
From discussion in the forum, it appears to be affecting only usernames with underscores. --Lesleywalker 19:46, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Two Hide/show boxes?

Hello, trying to have two hide/show boxes on my personal page Lowstandrd however, the second box keeps being "hidden" inside the first. I want it to list Event Awards hide/show. Then, separately below that, Trinkets show/hide. Can this be done? Not sure what I'm missing. Thanks mates. Lowstandrd 22:29, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Hey there. The issue is the show/hide template does not permit the vertical pipes from table code to be in the content. You could try converting your sub-pages into gallery code, which works fine. Fair winds! --Sagacious (talk) 23:43, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
That's not it at all. The problem is a lack of a close table tag (or something else like that) in the Event Awards sub-page, and as soon as I can figure out where in the code it's missing, I'll add it in. Show/hide boxes don't like tables being directly inside them, but when you're transcluding a sub-page, then it works just fine. --Belthazar451 00:02, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
There we go - you were missing the <small> close tags, which had the effect of breaking a <div> somewhere, which was confusing the wiki software. In my opinion, though, the page could do with something of a re-work - to me, it looks kind of ugly, and the coding is even worse. --Belthazar451 00:23, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
Nice catch. I ran the table code through my syntax checker and it came back as all tables were closed so I assumed it wasn't a missing open/close. --Sagacious (talk) 00:35, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Images missing: Atlantean band and Engraved atlantean band

HELP When I looked at my trinket page today, the Atlantean band and Engraved atlantean band images are missing. See this link: http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/Blackgold/Trinkets

I checked other pirates pages and their images are missing as well. I did a search on them and found that there are missing everywhere: http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/Atlantean_band

The image for the atlantean band was recently updated to include the new light blue color. Browsers that still have the old image cached will display it improperly. To clear your browser cahe from the old image, reload the page it appears on while holding the CTRL-key (that's for IE, with firefox try holding down the SHIFT key while reloading). --Alfwyn 15:14, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

new trophys

when do new trophys come out can you tell me please thanx —Preceding unsigned comment added by Odis2 (talkcontribs)

New trophies are usually added with each release that includes new things such as puzzles and events. We are never usually told when new trophies are added. --Sagacious (talk) 23:00, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Tan sacred skull image

The new CI trinket, the sacred skull, has a large red cross instead of the tan color. However, my pirate (Yarrmate) recently won one. How do I go about removing this cross? I tried changing the template but got the same thing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Birdmanjon (talkcontribs)

Ahoy! The reason you're getting a big red X instead of a tan skull is that noone's ever found one before - the image is missing from the wiki, and modifying the template won't magically make it appear. =) Thankfully, with your help we can rectify this situation. You can either post a .png screenshot of this trinket somewhere, or wait until one of us manages to get a hold of you in-game to take our own screenshot, and we'll add the image to the wiki for you. Fair winds! --Belthazar451 22:11, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

Snake images

What is the link info for posting Cursed Isle Snakes on page?

There's a forum listing on the colors people have found but no box setup or direction as to what the template will be called for future creations? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Everclearboy (talkcontribs)

It's the same template as the other familiars. The primary colour is the snake's head colour, while the secondary is its nose colour. If it's not already uploaded, the inventory image of the snake needs to be uploaded at Serpent-primary-secondary.png, with the {{familiar image}} (Usage) tag. If you're not sure you can do this, just post a link or a screenshot to the forum thread. --Belthazar451 03:55, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
Ok, on closer inspection, you already had everything right, save that the image hadn't been uploaded yet. I uploaded it for you. --Belthazar451 03:57, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

show/ hide box for pets

I have been instructed to add a show/hide feature on my pets table. I have gone to the wiki link suggested, searched on google and looked on other pirate pages but am still unsure how to do this. I used the code I found on the wiki page but am not sure exactly where it goes in the table. I have tried MANY differnt ways and each time I preview it is not right. I am not sure what I am doing wrong or where to look for the answer. Currently I'm just considering deleting the pets altogether so my page will be removed from the messed up pirate pages list. My pirates obscene amount of cats is somewhat of a joke in game and I feel removing them would take away from the point of making a page in the first place. Thank You, Talulah

aka Talulu

I put the pets into a show/hide box. -- Faulkston 03:14, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Long caption texts for small images

Piraten-Gutschein
Piraten-Gutschein

This problem occured on the german wiki, but I guess I will reach a larger audience of knowledgeable folk here. To the left is the problematic caption text (Piraten-Gutschein), which gets cut off, in varying fashion, by all browsers I tested. I looked at the resulting html code and produced a kind of hack that's displaying pleasingly enough at Schlange. Anyway, I would like a cleaner solution, since the source in all it's uglyness looks like:

<div class="thumb tleft"><div class="thumbinner" style="width:50px>[[Image:Trinket-Pirate_Ticket.png|Piraten-Gutschein]]<div class="thumbcaption">Piraten-<br>Gutschein</div></div></div>

Not very easy to change for the inexperienced editor and quite dependent on specific names used in the CSS (which is probably still better than expanding that code). Any suggestions ?

--Alfwyn 14:59, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Use gallery, it seems to handle it better. Images have to be the same size though if they're small. --Guppymomma 16:03, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

I like that solution - thanks. --Alfwyn 16:48, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

How do I update my crew's portrait?

We recently got a New portrait for the crew, but when I changed the portrait flag to yes, a christmas image unexpectedly came up and I do not see any way to change this. How do I update it? We'll probably do the flag's portrait soon as well, so I would like to know how. --Plng 11:34, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Go to your the image (click on it via the crew's page), scroll down a little, and you'll see a text link saying upload a new version of this image. Click that and it will be like a normal upload. You may have to reload the page proparly first for it to show up. Edit, if you still cant do it, leave me a message and I'll do it :) --Lcawte 11:27, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
It looks like the Christmas portrait is the portrait of the crew of the same name on the Hunter Ocean. Would uploading a new version affect the portrait displayed in their infobox? --Jenhonk 11:36, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Thank ye, Lcawte. @Jenhonk: It's the same crew.--Plng 11:38, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Bumping up old thread here, but: no it's not. You've replaced the portrait for a completely different crew. Even if it's run by the same people, it's still a different crew with its own portrait. I'll fix it, but take care with disambiguated names in future that you don't overwrite another crew's portrait. --Belthazar451 21:34, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Ability to edit typos, clarify misconceptions on the Greeter wiki documentation

There has been some disagreement among Sage greeters regarding what is and is not appropriate to ask on /gr. However, the greeter wiki pages have been locked. Who is in charge of maintaining the wiki pages for greetership? Tonyanator (tkp42) and Sedna (oceansadness) would like to suggest some changes to make the page more user friendly for new greeters, as well as for more seasoned greeters who have questions about the use/abuse of /gr. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tkp42 (talkcontribs)

The greeter chat rules have been moved to the Official namespace, which falls under the exclusive domain of the Ringers and OMs. That said, the list of rules in the wiki is simply a write-up of what the rules are, not the definition of the rules - if that makes any sense. If all you're suggesting is a re-wording of what's there rather than any change of the rules, your best bet is probably to start a new thread on the YPPedia Community board. --Belthazar451 23:39, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
