Regarding the User: Namespace

I'm not Barrister, but I can offer an explanation based in theory: The reason that a pirate pages are limited in the main namespace is that there are only so many people monitoring the wiki for inappropriate changes. Limiting the number of pirate pages helps to ensure that there are enough editors to maintain the integrity of the main namespace, and cross-linking to the User: namespace defeats the real reason that the pirate page criteria was adopted in the first place. Editors can now safely ignore User: space contributions; allowing User: space linkings in the main namespace would require not only monitoring the changes to the User: namespace, but also checking whether that particular User: page was linked in an article. A page like User:Covenant7/Bhrathair (Viridian) fits the YPPedia article feel, but a page like User:AtteSmythe does not. --AtteSmythe 10:47, 5 May 2006 (PDT)

So you are saying that linking to the User namespace from the main namespace is not recommended because if someone vandalises the user page no-one will notice/change it? Or is it because no-one checks the user pages for quality? – Covenant7 (talk/contrib) 12:18, 5 May 2006 (PDT)
Well, it's a combination of reasons, including some of what AtteSmythe wrote. The User: space is different than the main space, in part because it doesn't show up in the default search space (when you use the box on the left side of the screen). User: pages are also meant to be a bit of privately-controlled space for each user. Barring illegal or genuinely offensive material, no one will edit your page. (Although we do make sure that they're not categorized as "noted pirate" pages.) Because these pages are unmonitored and unedited, it could be a bit of a shock if someone clicks from a "main" page (like a crew) and ends up in User: space. Further, the User: page is often about the player rather than the pirate. (User:Barrister is entirely made up of notes to myself.) There's a balance to be achieved here: either we monitor and edit all user pages (impossible) or we limit links to them to maintain consistency in both style and content. I hope this makes some sense. --Barrister 12:41, 5 May 2006 (PDT)
Ok. In light of what has been said I understand the reasons why you unlinked it, and I'll unlink the other instance of my pirate name in the crew ships section. Perhaps there should be a note somewhere in the policy about this? I know I thought that using my user page was a brilliant idea at the time, and it might be the case that others will think the same and be as puzzled as I was as to why the link was removed. – Covenant7 (talk/contrib) 14:52, 5 May 2006 (PDT)

Thanks for dropping at

I think i was able to fix my page. please drop there, i just got some things from yers (hope ye dont mind) cos im not so good at wiki yet ^^

And man, i luved the memming area ! --Knirt 19:21, 5 May 2006 (PDT)

No problem, your page looks good as well. Of course I don't mind that you copied some stuff from my page, I can't exactly stop you because by putting stuff on this wiki I agree to release it without copyright. If you want to copy the memming area you're welcome. – Covenant7 (talk/contrib) 03:02, 6 May 2006 (PDT)

Is there a short way of writing your username followed by talk/contributions in the way that you do, or do you do it the long way around each time? (Like there is for signing with your name and time using four ~) --Whitemonkey 08:48, 1 March 2007 (PST)

What you can do is use the nickname feature in preferences, just type in something like (5 ~ gives just the date)
 Covenant7 <small>(t/c)</small> ~~~~~
check the raw signature box and the four ~ sig gets replaced by that. -- Covenant7 (t/c) 08:59, 1 March 2007 (PST)

I don't get it... :-/ -- Thefirstdude 10:13, 1 March 2007 (PST)
Step by step guide for you:
 1. Make Signature: Do this by editing a page and previewing until you get it right, using the code above as a sample if you want and changing the names. Once you have what you want there's no need to save the page, just copy what you ended up with. Five tildes (~~~~~) will turn into the date and time. You'll probably want to leave the -- off the front so the signature button still works, so you'd get something like this:
Thefirstdude <small>(t/c)</small> ~~~~~
 1. Go to your preferences page and paste in your signature to the Nickname field on the User profile tab
 2. Check the Raw signatures box
 3. Save the settings and then you can use/preview your new signature using the same --~~~~ code as before.
