Welcome back to the wiki!

Ahoy, matey! Welcome back to editing the wiki! I just wanted to drop by and say two things. First, thanks for noticing and fixing the changes you accidentally made to the Crewstub template. It takes guts to admit that you goofed, and to fix your own mistakes before they're pointed out to you. Second, I noticed that you made 20 edits to one page in a short time. I don't know if you know about or have used the preview functionality. If you're not dealing with changing templates, previewing is a great way to see possible changes before you commit them. Of course, mistakes are made, and I have definitely done the multiple-edits-in-a-short-time-to-one-page thing, but previewing is nicer all around when it's possible. (If you are dealing with templates, you can always use your own sandbox to play around with them.) I hope you don't this message as critical; it isn't meant to come across that way. I just like seeing more active editors! If you have any questions, etc., I'm more than happy to help you, as are others. Thanks for coming back to editing (after quite the long break!) Hey! I have no idea if this is how to reply, but thanks for the message. I'll make sure to preview next time I edit! And thanks for the help and acknowledgement of my balls! I was noticing that the stub templates are hard to copy and the crew templates are hard to find, is there a way this could be fixed?
Does this help? YPPedia:Style guide (I agree that it's often difficult to find information, but I haven't thought of a solution yet. Wait, maybe I just had an idea. I'll have to think about it some more.) --Budclare2 06:49, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
Yup, that's exactly how you reply on a talk page. (It helps if you put ~~~~ after your comments on talk pages, so that we know who posted and when.) I remember when I first started editing; I was terrified that I'd make a small change and be told by 20 people that I did it wrong. Even when I did do it wrong, it was gently pointed out to me, and I've gradually become a lot better. This is really a great community.
Responding to your specific questions: The link Budclare posted contains a list of all the common templates. It's a bit long, yes, but it has lots of good information. For the stub templates, did you know that all you have to do is put {{crewstub}} in your article, and the whole template is automatically copied? Here is an example of that in action. It's called transclusion, and it's used all the time for different templates. For the infobox templates (crew, pirate, etc.), they are all listed on Budclare's link. For an example of using them, feel free to look at my pirate (Jamesh), or my crew (Marauders). Additionally, the usage notes on the crew infobox template should help you know what to do. If not, then we can work on making the notes better. ;)
Yes, the templates could (and probably should) be made easier to find, and maybe to use. I'm curious to see what Budclare's idea is. Anyways, fair winds, and don't hesitate to ask questions (here, or posting on my talk page would both be fine). Jlh0605 (t/c) 15:04, 27 May 2016 (UTC)
The short answer is: navbar overhaul. Some of those links are unnecessary clutter (Random page? Really?) or could just use clearer names, and they could be sorted better, and a few new/newish links could be added. But it'll take time to sort through everything and put together a list of recommendations, and then there will have to be a forum discussion about it, and then an admin would have to actually make the changes... Then there will probably be a few new help pages to make up, once we have somewhere to put them where people might actually find them. Oo, and I wonder if we could use mouseover to add useful information about the navbar links? Hmm, yes we can, because a lot of the links have it already...just often not the links that really need it. Anyway, it's going to take a while. --Budclare2 23:56, 27 May 2016 (UTC)
Hey all dem homies! Thanks for the replies and what not. Yea it doesn't make sense to really have the pirate names (The Spyglass, Cask o' Blog, etc. What even does that all mean) and random pages. I think it would make sense to make yppedia it's own separate entity. The top bar should be a yppedia topbar, with a link back to puzzlepirates.com then it could have a few drop down menus. One for create (with templates for pirate pages, crew pages, and flag pages, and the most user friendly templates + tutorials ever, that way anyone can use it), then have a bar for exploring yppedia, maybe broken up by ocean specific and general stuff, and then have a learn for learning how to puzzle. Maybe something like that. I know the only time I updated the yppedia was to install on Linux, and I did that for it to be super easy for anyone to do, that way when I inevitably deleted PP I could use those instructions again. The crew, pirates, and flags should be that simple 04:46, 14 June 2016 (UTC)Fredric
Unfortunately, I'm not sure how much we even have the ability to change. There are things that we ought to be able to do that the wiki software might not actually allow. :(
Good suggestions, though. I just finished up a good chunk of my to-do list, so hopefully I'll have time to start researching what we can actually do. --Budclare2 15:00, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
