Fruit running is the practice of transporting fruit in various quantities to a market. There are two main methods of obtaining fruit: foraging for it directly, or purchasing it for a low cost and sailing it to another market to sell at a higher profit. The foraging method is more popular due to the higher profit margin involved. It is done from the hold of a ship in the port of an uncolonised island, with the fruit going straight to the hold.

The main motivation for foraging is that it can be very profitable if done correctly. However, it is time consuming. Each pirate must stay on board a ship for 10 minutes before he or she may forage. There is then the journey to the destination market, which usually involves a cross-archipelago route for maximum profit. Ideally, you will forage at an uninhabited island, and at the other end of the interarch will be an island with a market where you can sell your fruit. However, such routes are not always common, depending on the ocean. Market demand for fruit may also vary.

More successful foragers tend to use multiple alts to maximise profits, since this allows for more fruit to be gathered in a shorter amount of time. Since a player can generally create three accounts, and each account has 3 pirates, a single foraging player on a doubloon ocean can generally have 9 pirates foraging every day. A subscription account only gets 24 hours of labor per account, and accounts must be subscribed to forage.
