It’s not that easy being green

When I was green and naïve

There is a popular explanation for why greenies are annoying and it has to do with the fact that perhaps they don't realize that they're in a social environment, as shown here. A sort of George Mead-children playing football scenario where one has yet to realize their place in the greater order of things. Unfortunately, I cannot claim such an excuse for the annoying tendencies that I had when I was a greenie. Let me tell you the first thing I did when I logged on...

I believe it was either Midnight or Viridian, I did a few missions and had a good grasp of swordfighting and I wanted to see if players were any harder than the teaching bots. The area outside of the palace was scant of life and so I targetted one person and sent him/her (Like I can remember events a year ago) a challenge that was promptly rejected. Undaunted by the curtness of my would-be foe and motivated by my desire to test steel against someone who I can taunt later, I re-sent the challenge. And again. And again.

And again.

I followed the pirate across the island by foot until they disappeared into a building and probably whisked somewhere else to lose me. Naturally they were most likely a stranger to dnd and mute, but that's no excuse for my behaviour. Nor my constantly giggling throughout the occurrance.

There is a certain element of immaturity that is required to enjoy Y!PP and I'm a believer in that. Just like children playing football will eventually learn to work as a team as they grow older, greenies will mature and can become something totally unrecognizable. I mean, look at me and how I started. I might have been banned on my first day for all I know, but I wasn't and I've come a long way since.

So the moral of this story is to the salted pirates: be patient and encouraging, everyone starts off somewhere. Guide them to where they'll be amazing and you'll be surprised just how amazing they can be. To you green players: Don't be put off by rude people, but also reflect upon your own actions. Take advice to heart and be the best you can be. And oh, sorry to the poor pirate that was stalk by me on my first day!

Fun things to do when starting out

The navy. Starting out, I almost always preferred the navy over anything else. Not only could I stop any time I wanted without punishment (in real life or otherwise), but I got to try out the puzzles at my own pace and try to figure them out systematically without worrying that people will be mad at my poor scores. On top of that, I worked diligently for the navy to try and get as much clothing as possible, hoping to get the good stuff fast.

I spent most of my time on the sea, avoiding gambling and the inn in general as much as I could as I did not want to ever lose my hard earned cash. I had read somewhere that carpentry and sailing were the two most important puzzles and that a good pirate should be well versed with at least one of them. At that time I was a weak swordfighter and sailor, but a quick thinking and, thus, carpentry became my puzzle of choice for a long time.

I jobbed around and looked for a crew that pillaged consistently during my online time and ended up with The Lost Lot on Viridian. Good carpenters were scarce among notice board jobbers those days and I quickly gained a good standing with my crew. I found out quickly that a well run pillage gave many times more PoE than the navy did and pillaged every day and watched my PoE counter grow.

They say that ignorance is bliss and those simple days were one of the best. Nowadays greenies have many missions to choose from and much to do off the notice board. I fully encourage new players to explore every aspect of the notice board and all their menus, as well as anything else they can crawl around in. Y!PP is a beautiful game and one should start off with the mindset of exploration and discovery.

Important commands to know and to be aware of

The most important resources lay under the "ye" tab. By clicking your name from there, you can see your own stats. The info button leads to the doubloon trade, palace shoppe, and ye known world as well as having vital information about your purchases, labour, and items in the ocean. The ye tab also has a help button where the petition, bug, and ask a greeter buttons are found. For greenies who are clueless, the greeter button is wonderful. Finally the ye tab also features the options buttons which will allow you to change some of your controls and sound settings and other things too.

There are also many useful IRC-like commands that one can use from the text field. Typing /help will show you most of them. Be sure to try them out!

Selecting your ocean

Before you log in, there is a "change" button near the huge logon button (which can stand to be bigger). There are currently 5 production oceans, two subscription and two doubloon oceans. There is also a link there that explains generally what these oceans are about. For the casual player, I do suggest the doubloon oceans. I personally was spawned on Midnight first and later on switched to Viridian after I curiously decided to read the ocean comparison link.
