Puzzle Pirates is unique among other massive multiplayer online (MMO) games in that it features a relatively unregulated open-market economy that appears subject to the same economic forces as real-life economies such as the United States and the European Union. To keep the economy moving, there are distinct PoE fountains and PoE sinks, where PoE enters and leaves the economy, respectively, the proper balance of which is necessary to ensure that inflation or recession does not take hold on the economy.
PoE most commonly enters the economy through vessel attacks upon Brigand ships. PoE most commonly leaves the economy through sales taxes at shoppes and stalls, though 10% of the tax goes to the island's governor. The majority of economic activity on the oceans involves PoE moving from one pirate to another, through trades and shoppe purchases, carousing games and wagers.
On the doubloon oceans, doubloons add their own unique aspect to the Puzzle Pirates economy. Unlike PoE, doubloons can only enter the economy through one source, and once spent doubloons are sunk from the economy. But once in the economy, doubloon exchange rates appear subject to the same supply and demand as other items and commodities. The impact of doubloons on the economies of the doubloon oceans is difficult to measure, however.
