Talk:Event E2/Proposal Raelshark

From YPPedia

Benefits

Figured I'd post here about this - one advantage I see of this event is that it might spread awareness of Y!PP outside the game community. Any skins that are created can not only be used by any of the community when not playing, but they can also be posted out on the many skin/theme sites that exist for each of the applications. Is that something that's worth emphasizing more in the proposal itself? It's not directly related to the execution of the event... but sort of a side benefit. --Raelshark 20:38, 1 February 2006 (PST)

Permission

http://forums.puzzlepirates.com/community/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=20734 This has what you are looking for. As what nemo said, they would like advanced notice if you did it and would perfer not to if I understand what you are trying to do. Rappak 22:59, 2 February 2006 (PST)

I read the post from Nemo, and how I read it was you should have permission first, which I think with this being a proposal that OM's will help shortlist and mentor in, if they shortlist it, he has approval. I thought Nemo's post was actually encouraging to the original person with the skins just making sure they knew it was good form to ask, so I don't see why the event would be impossible or next to impossible. Read the details of the contest - this competition is actually different than what that thread is about. This is not a contest to create another skin for the Puzzle Pirates game, but to create a Puzzle Pirates skin for another application, such as Winamp or Windows Media Player. This doesn't change Puzzle Pirates at all and doesn't require Ringer permission. The target applications are actually designed to allow you to create your own skins, and there are many skins for other popular games already out there. For example, here is the official World of Warcraft theme for Windows Media Player. --RaelShark 07:19, 3 February 2006 (PST)

Well, can't say I know a huge amount about skins, but the example you gave was great for clarifying your idea more to people like me who don't know about skins. Very cool, great idea. CountCristo

Great idea. So far one of the most original i think. Good work

Hey, I never claimed to know what I was talking about. I don't know Comp Sci so this is way beyond what I understand... Rappak 10:20, 3 February 2006 (PST)

Heh, understandable... and thanks for the feedback. Hopefully if it's run right even people without much experience in such things can get involved. So if it's not clear what the contest is about to non-techy people then I'm not explaining it well enough. --RaelShark 11:57, 3 February 2006 (PST)

Technical Ability

I've never actually made a skin before, nor enter contests that require computer graphic manipulation. However, based on the skill of many pirates out there in these forum-based contests held previously, there are some seriously skilled mates out there who could do this. So, I don't think that the technical threshold is too high at all. If people can Photoshop and make neato avatars, skins should be comparable. As long as there is enough information provided and links to how to do this correctly, the event is great :) --Hedgehog2005 08:57, 3 February 2006 (PST)

I've modified the entry some to include links to tutorials for the mentors to glance over if they wish. I also added the intention to include tutorials, and even provide technical support and early testing to participants to ensure their entries work correctly. Judging will be purely based on creativity and use of the theme, not technical proficiency. The goal is to encourage as many people as possible to enter, and remove the technical barrier altogether. I think this change will put it more inline with the standards of a familiar event. I also removed a section suggesting the possibility of bonus credit for Y!PP-related functionality, as it would focus too much on technical prowess. --Raelshark 21:49, 5 February 2006 (PST)
