Account names
I'd like to clarify about this comment:
If someone asks you or someone else for an account name or password in-game for any reason, send in a complaint about them immediately.
Should you retype that about the account name? There are many legitimate reasons for asking for someone's account name, for example being able to PM them on the forums. --Piplicus 12:41, 28 December 2006 (PST)
- Well, okay, yeah. Fixed. :) --Eurydice 17:21, 28 December 2006 (PST)
I Was Hacked! What Do I Do?
How about some prevention? If hacking is a problem, why not try to prevent hacking in the first place? Take Windows for example: 2K and XP can go a long way to prevent hacks if you let them. Otherwise, the other prevention section? Absolutely correct in that the majority of fraud has nothing to do with hacks.
That anti-virus bit? If your AV software needs updates to catch new viruses and hacks, you need better AV software.
Internet sharing routers also make much better firewalls than any firewall software you can buy, and they're cheaper and faster too.
And yes, I dislike security non-experts giving security advice. --Dobdobbodpa 20:41, 12 January 2007 (PST)
Categories
Any idea why the two categories were removed in the rewrite that this page had? --Thunderbird 00:20, 26 October 2012 (PDT)
- Likely an oversight, back in place now. Thanks for the heads up! --Clotho 20:14, 30 October 2012 (PDT)
Minor misspell noticed
We do not provide support over instant message services (such as AIM, MSN, Skype). Do not give out your account information or password if you are contacted via one of these services. It is recommended that you not contact players using these services. If a player asks to speak with you out of game they may be doing so to compromise your account. Also note that even just revealing your Skype name (and possibly that of other similar services) bears the risk of a maliscious player interfering with your gameplay due to a security weakness in the Skype protocol.
Don't
Don't use words found in the dictionary. This includes words created by using common substituions such as p4ssw0rd.
-- Noticed some small misspellings in a few of the bullets, just wanted to point them out :) --Shipyardmatt 10:32, 25 May 2016 (PDT)
- Fixed and checked for others using Firefox's built in spell checker, nothing else came up. I did double-check the malicious one in an online dictionary just to be sure it wasn't a UK spelling. --Thunderbird 16:36, 26 May 2016 (UTC)
Dead link
The Password FAQ link is dead. May I suggest an article that describes NIST password standards, such as this one. Chupchup 00:46, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
